He's a dead horse on these forums, but his little audio clip on the latest AWO prompted me to look him up on Youtube again. Come on, nerds. Why do you laugh and cheer at this? Y'know, good for him for finding this audience, and I'm not here to dump hate on him, but. . . someone explain to me why this is funny to you.
Someone should've ran up there and lit his script on fire. But once again, the hatred should not be aimed at him, but his obnoxious overreactive fans. It's like every time I cringed or smirked, a barrage of laughter came out.
When I went to see him at Otakon it was pretty uncomfortable. There was a long string of anime's names used as verbs that was hilarious to a ton of people apparently. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.
Yeah, I did have Uncle Yo as a host, and that's because he writes for my site, and I think that he is a smart, consistent anime reviewer. As for his comedy, I'll admit that it's not the funniest thing I've ever heard, but I definitely enjoy it. (Note that the first time I saw Uncle Yo perform was after hearing Daryl make fun of him and before he wrote for my site, and I still found it pretty enjoyable.)
I thank MCBurnett and Joel for not dumping hate on him, since it really is great for him that he has been able to tap into the heretofore unnoticed niche of otaku stand-up comedy. I don't want to write up a huge rant about Uncle Yo here, since I know that you've all got your opinions about him, and I don't aim to change them. Still I'd attribute a lot of people's problems with him (as nmmMmM does) to his crowds, who seem to laugh the most at his least funny material.
Okay, now is the part where I get flamed to all hell.
His puns make little to any sense , his delivery and punch lines are weak and his facial expressions are just fucking awful. But maybe it should be noted, that the people who laugh the defecation that comes out of his mouth also watch Bleach.
In short, you suck sir.
*Before some lame brain comes and flames me for this crap. I watch tons of standup comedy , and I think I know a bad apple when I see one. This is a putrid , worm infested apple if I've ever seen one*
Here's the thing I realized about this guy after spending the entire night working on a section of a script that leaned heavily on Transformers references for jokes. . .
If I was hanging out with Uncle Yo on a couch with a couple other people, and he was cracking jokes, I'd probably smile. I'd probably join in. Nerd humor in a natural setting, as part of conversation, is great. But to take the references and in-jokes and see them put together in such calculated fashion, on a stage in front of a crowd that just gets excited to hear someone mention any fringe media that they, too, enjoy. . . that is something I can not get into.
There's a difference between a joke and a reference.
Also, there's a lot of people who write for Collection DX that are not hosts on Destroy All Podcasts DX. Just because somewhere is THERE does not make them suitable for podcasting. Awful standup aside, I listened to your podcast with that guy on, and he is dragging it doooooownnnnn.
Yeah I'm not gonna contribute anything, but fuck it, this guy's shit sucks. Now I'm no comedian, but I know when something is funny, and that shit ain't it. Also, Chronocross, don;t worry, his anti-humor transcend all known languages into suck.
I'm definitely going to read his reviews and try and listen to him in a context that's not the stand-up. I just don't think there exists this niche for nerd humor about just anime. At least, I don't think you can pull a half hour (or however long his sets are) of material from it from. He can't get too narrow in what he focuses on or he loses his audience. If he starts talking about what was so funny about the seventeenth episode of Pretty Princess Yukuki-san Omega Ori he's going to put all but two of the people listening to sleep. I wonder if I'd like him better if he talked about real life situations more than making puns or holding up manga emotes and stringing titles together (I'll be a little embarrassed if I find out he does, I've only ever been able to sit through anything past those two things). I think there's a lot more humor to be found in cons and anime clubs and collecting, model building, the rage of dub versus sub, TV editing. Whatever. Just, make actual jokes and less puns/sight gags.
I doubt I could ever be too into a "otaku" comic, but I could certainly see myself not being offended by one.
