Metal Gear Solid 4 - Danger: No more spoiler tags
  • I don't think I like it. More to come.

Though Ocelot did just hand gesture me.
  • How are the cut scenes treating you?
  • I wrote an entry on my blog after Act 3. I think I claimed that the end cinema to that act was "the most emotionally moving piece of art in entertainment history". I like them. I liked that one a LOT.

I don't notice their length, except the briefings.

I tell ya though, this final boss fight is fucking lame. Like, weakest in the series, lame.
  • So, can you pause the cutscenes to take a break if you feel like it?

    I'd probably get this If I owned a PS3, but I don't =(
  • You can pause and skip.

Not to try and spoil anything, but know what I love most at the end of Metal Gear games?

    Family reunions and weddings.
  • Also, for anyone wondering what in the hell was up with the beginning (the commercial and the gameshow) expect NO explanation. It's just there.
  • Did you like the ending? I got a little choked up when Big Boss saluted the Boss again.

About the final boss did you mean... the fist fight or the actual boss fight with Mantis? I felt the fist fight with Ocelot was more like an interactive cutscene. I did the 'both getting punched in the face at the same time' thing like 20 times and trying to do CQC on him was pretty worthless cause he would reverse then I would reverse with little damage dealt. I still liked it though.
  • I feel an undying urge to say "DID U RIKE IT?", but I'll resist. I really enjoy parts of the game (cutscenes, boss fights) but god damnit, if I have to go through another escort quest or on rails driving mission I'm going to strangle someone.

There has been surprising little "hide from the bad guys", which is what I think defines metal gear solid. Or maybe I'm just being a bitch because the whole game feels really disjointed. I know there is a lot of ground to cover (storywise), but this game feels much more linear than its predecessors.
  • ACT 5 Spoilers:

    Spoiler:
Do not use CQC on Ocelot. It's faster and does more damage to mess up his teeth with a combo. That's the fight I'm referring to not liking. The Mantis one was rad, because I immediately got my second controller. Otacon then called me an idiot because it doesn't work.

    Spoiler:
Did anyone else feel like a genius when they killed Vamp and Mantis? Also, the first fight, with Octopus? Yeah, that was seriously the most frightening fight of my life. Every time she appeared there was like a low, heavy guitar line and it was just awesome.

Did you guys play it sneaky-like, or running and gunning? I found myself being killed whenever I went Rambo, but it was so hard to not be seen.

    Beauty and the Beast/FROG Spoilers:

    Spoiler:
The dual-voice acting with the women and then that dude was fucking brilliant. That seriously made these characters for me. Also, the FROGs screaming when they die is terrifying.

    Final Thoughts:

    Spoiler:
I was disappointed with a lot of the story until Big Boss' revelations. Ocelot actually faking to be Liquid was rad, Kojima makes all of the people with "it makes sense" theories look like morons. Big Boss' appearance sent chills down my back, but I felt his death was dragged out and his overall existence in four was nothing more than fan-service. Here's a question: EVA knew that it was Solidus' corpse, and not Boss'... Why the fuck did she jump in the fire? Also, Act 3 was incredible, Act 4 shoved nostalgia down your throat so hard it got to the point where I was like, Ok, I don't want to be here anymore. Act 5 had its moments, and I liked that when it did picture-in-picture that I could actually see Ray jump on the boat - unlike when I had to kill GEKKOs and could not watch Raiden get fucking rocked by Vamp without paying for it. I loved it overall, but that's as a fanboy. The story is retarded by the end, and a lot of the closure offered is kind of half assed. I thought Snake NOT shooting himself after firing was a total bullshit way to incorporate BB. Yeah, he's doomed, but it was more moving when it went black after a gunshot.
  • OK. Now keep in mind I'm an MGS superfan, so this is a bit skewed anyway.

I beat it over the weekend, 19 hours something, eagle crest. I started off pimping my stealth style, but the game felt like it encouraged gunning more, so I became a run and gunner, then just decided to kill everything. I had like over 700 kills. Lol. I'll get to my thoughts and try to keep it short. There are so many layers to this game it's tough to look at it like other games. If you break it down by the standard game reviewers guide, you fail, because this is a crazy experience that is working on alot of different levels.

    Thoughts:

    Spoiler:
I don't know where to start. The game is an epic magnum opus with some minor flaws that keep me from raising it to the top of the series. The final boss fight in particular was nowhere near as epic as fighting 20 Rays at the end of 2, and didn't even have the emotional impact of fighting The Boss at the end of 3, which was a gut-wrenching battle.

Drebin Lameness - I hated Drebin and thought he was the worst MGS character, ever. But I understand the need for Kojima to justify the instant shopping feature. There is no way he would implement such a crazy new feature for this series without trying to explain it with in-game terms, and on that level I get it.

Raiden Lameness - I'm with Mitchy on the fake-out deaths. They gave Raiden this huge sacrificial hero/burial at sea ending, and then psyche he's back! He somehow swam all the way across the ocean with no arms, snuck onto a giant warship with his sword in his mouth, put on a coat, saves the day, then gets his whole body re-attached so he can be reunited with his family. So lame. And so many leaps in logic there. I would have appreciated it if Kojima had been able to let Snake kill himself, but it would have killed the replay value of the game. The fact he survives makes it more tragic to me, in a way. Also, I heard that the entire Kojima Productions staff vetoed his original ending. I can only assume he did kill off Snake, and they made him change it

Big Boss Lameness - What? He was in suspended animation for years, wakes up, gets out, somehow figures out everything that has transpired that he couldn't possibly know about, and decides to visit Snake at The Boss' grave so he can make amends, even though somehow he knows Snakes carries a new Foxdie that will kill him. ...What?

Liquid Ocelot Lameness - So...he has been setting up this scenario for years so that he could manipulate Snake into tracking him to the GW AI mainframe and upload a virus he never knew existed into it to finally bring down the Patriots? What? Or did he really want to take control, Snake ruined everything and he decided, what the hell, at least the Patriots are done? But he told Snake something like his whole plan was for Snake to take down the Patriots? God wtf.

So those were all issues I had with the major players. I don't understand Naomi's suicide at all, or Eva's actions either. And who injected Snake with the new Foxdie? Drebin?

As you can tell, all my critiques are regarding the plot. The gamplay, the bosses, the pacing, the presentation, the cutscenes, the social commentary, the hidden messages, all of it were so over the top amazing.

I did the thing Mitchy did by switching controller ports on the Mantis fight, and Otacon's message was hilarious. You can also use a headset during the game, and some of the codec calls will come directly to the headset instead of in-game. Crazy cool. And yes, figuring out how to beat Vamp was like having an epiphany.

I can see it be off-putting at first. Like discussed on last weeks' 1up Yours, the first Act in the middle east is an overwhelming barrage of enemies, explosions, crazy Gekko's and whatnot. It takes a few hours to start getting funneled down the traditional MGS structure. Some people will like the beginning alot, and not the rest, I preferred the latter, more traditional stages.

I immediately started the game again with the attempt to stealth my way though. I'm doing pretty good so far, but not sure how to make it past the female monster-like PMC FROG's (What's up with them? Why do they disintegrate?)

Anyway, I'm also playing MGO now. Seems like alot of fun with the right people, but random people suck, and so do I. It's a very team-based game.

    PSN:Mifune
    Game ID: Tolstoys_Hookah
    In Game Name: AkuMifune

I know alot of people (and I suspect D&J) can't wait to rip this game apart. From the outside it seems pretentious, overly complicated, and overrated. But I think the same thing about Anime, so to each his own I guess.

    Discuss!
  • PSN: MitchyD
GameID:_-.mitchyd88.-_ - I know right? Fucking Konami ID shit is so lame!!
    In Game Name: MitchyD.

    Agree with you Pazuzuzuzuzuz.
  • I went stealth whenever I could but I always liked dawning the local militia or rebels uniform in the first two acts and helping them out.

I also totally missed Raiden and Vamps fight because I was to worried about those damn Gekkos. I finally got a moment of peace to watch it and it was already at the end.

I think I mentioned this here, but god damn it, that made me so mad. I intentionally died to watch it go down, and oh man did homeboy get his ass whooped.

Also, I'm not using spoiler tags anymore. I'm changing the thread title.
  • So it sounds like MGS4 does the same thing that annoys me about the other MGS I've played. I'm too busy playing the game to watch all the cool stuff that's happening around me. I wish that the game had a "cinema" feature, that recorded all of my movements and let me replay the game with a third-person flying camera view. So I could, for example, fly around and watch myself sneaking, and watch the guards reacting and trying to find me, all that sort of thing.
  • You know, that would be pretty badass.
Apparently you can set the camera to be operated by a 2p controller so you can take action shots with Snake in them. Or from Snakes 3rd person view really.
  • Ok, so now that some people here have pretty much played through it, I want to ask again. . .

Is this a game I could enjoy without having played any of the previous games? This is an honest question. I really want to be a part of the discussion on this game, but I do not have the time to go back and play 1-3, and THEN 4. I watched some retrospectives on GameTrailers. Can I get some enjoyment, and some of the emotional value, out of this coming in cold?
  • I heard MGS4 had flashbacks. I haven't played it yet so someone else will have to report on their extent.

MitchyD, put the spoiler tags back.
  • The flashbacks really aren't that great. Like press X rapidly and you'll get a few pictures. They'll help you remember maybe if you have already played the previous games.

I think if you read some synopsis' and watch the retrospectives you can understand the story. I'm not to sure about having the same emotional value as playing them though.

Read the wikipedia. You need to know characters to give a shit about what's going on.

As for flashbacks, don't expect much.
  • Wait, what happened to no more spoiler tags?
  • What do you mean? I just turned it in to the spoiler thread because I was too lazy to type the spoiler tags. 8)
  • I'm so addicted to MGO right now. I think I have a problem.
  • I love CQC'ing other people in MGO. Although sometimes it turns into dive rolling and trying to grab each other.
  • People never grab me - I've been snuck up on once, but I got a bullet in the head. I ALWAYS win CQC fights, or I brain someone trying to grab me.

But when I'm being shot at, that's it, the end.
  • So are we gonna play some MGO or what?
  • We can only search by character name, so list your character name and add eachother as friends.

    Mine: AkuMifune
  • My name is Digitalguardian.

    edit
  • My character name is KYLE.

Pazuzu, I think the game is region locked. I tried searching for your name, but i'll be damned if I could find it. Maybe I need to look harder.
Also, while CQC may be hard to preform the payoff is so much more rewarding. Sneaking up behind someone, grabbing them, sticking them with a tracking needle, and then forcing them onto all fours with the CQC bearhug amuses me to no end.
Until their teammate comes along and shoots me in the head.

Does anyone else here have an animal symbol? I got the pigeon rank for being a pacifist and not killing people.
  • EDIT: (Figured it out) It's case sensitive. I searched for digitalguardian, nothing. I searched for Digitalguardian, and found him.

In my case the A and M are capital in AkuMifune. This whole thing is ridiculous.

And yet, I can't wait to get home and play.
  • How did you guys get good names?! I had to use underscores and shit. Seriously!!!
  • [quote="Pazuzu"]EDIT: (Figured it out) It's case sensitive. I searched for digitalguardian, nothing. I searched for Digitalguardian, and found him.

Awesome, I can't wait to play with intelligent people.
  • Well I was wrong, or something. I can find you guys listed through the community site, but not in-game, I keep getting an error. So messed up.

If any of you guys stick with it, we'll figure something out. Like just have someone create a fastkarate room with a password at a specific day/time, and just leave it on so we can join to make friends. For some reason MGO has hit me with MMO levels of addiction. I'm so focused on mastering the key skills and whatnot, I could be hooked for awhile.

I was getting frustrated, but continued play is paying off. My overall k/d ratio is like 600/800, but checking my weekly stats I'm around 100/90, so either I'm improving or just playing lesser competition.
  • I have Kyle but I don't have Pazuzu or MitchyD. I suspect we have to be online at the same time. I'll try to leave MGO on so you guys can find me. I think that's what everyone has to do.
  • WoW Sony/Konami. Way to work together to make the most retarded online play ever conceived.
  • It's defintely fun for me. Today I was in a firefight with two guys and I was nearly dead but an explosive barrel happened to be nearby and I shot it without knowing. It was divine providence because it killed one guy who was following me and blew me and the other guy clear across the alley. I managed to kill him first after we recovered from the explosion.
  • I'm sure the gameplay is fine, I'm speaking specifically of the logins/friends process.
  • On top of that, registration was a not-worth-it nightmare.
  • [quote="Dave"]WoW Sony/Konami. Way to work together to make the most retarded online play ever conceived.
    The Wii says hi.
  • I'll agree that the Wii is worse overall, the comination of the PS3's awful online system with MGO's atrocious overlay probably bumps it up to the top.
  • [quote="MitchyD"]On top of that, registration was a not-worth-it nightmare.

Well I would say almost not worth. It was extremely tedious and I kept asking myself if it was worth jumping through these many hoops.
  • Kojima games are interactive anime, and Z.O.E works a lot better than MGS in my opinion. I wanted the game play parts to last a longer than because acts 1, 2, and 4 were fun to play.

    Spoiler:
I wanted the game to end with Snake killing himself instead of having a hug time with Big Boss. The game kept bringing people back when they should have stayed dead. The boss fights were kinda weak other than Vamp and Mantis.

    I liked the game overall.
  • "Can love bloom on the battlefield?"

    Apparently, the answer is yes.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4STLw9qnNo&NR=1

Note: This is pretty much what every MGS game boils down to. Enjoy
  • That gunfight was my favorite cutscene in the game.
  • I dunno, as much as I liked that scene it simply cannot top the scene where Ocelot takes down a whole army with
    Spoiler:
    hand gestures
    .
Kojima had slowly been working up to it throughout the series, but I never imagined he would actually do it.
  • Nano machines, what, Metal Gear!?
  • I finally got a chance to play it (and beat it). To me, it deserves every single 10 it got in all the reviews of it. And if any were lower, shame on them. The only thing that kinda pissed me off was that there wasn't enough gameplay, and that some of the drama was poorly done in the English dub (basically all of Otacon). 10/10, fuck all the haters.
  • It's a perfect game except that it has all these flaws!
  • 10/10 doesn't mean it's a perfect game.
  • Never said it was a perfect game. Because it isn't. The online is fun for a little bit but there are like 4 maps. And at least 2 of those are recycled from MGS3 Subsistence.
  • What the hell do you think 10/10 means if not perfect?
