DMX vs. Ghostbusters: The Youtube Thread
  • Fuck.

    Really.

    Fuck.
  • You can take comfort in the strong probability that she is crazy and in the actuality that the ordinance she was speaking against passed.
  • That has to be one of my favorite YouTube videos now. "homiciders"
  • It's a real shame about those scholastically failing hetero raping San Franciscan children.

    To help rehabilitate us.
  • I lost it around 2:36, that was awesome
  • I bet emails she forwards to her kids go straight into the spam folder.
  • There's a chance I might watch this when it starts up...
  • This is the same way I react to hearing the intro to that song, regardless of where I find myself.

  • Yeah, I'll try that.

Edit: the show, not the Nirvana thing.
  • What the fuck? Electricity no longer works? Just the absurdity of that idea makes my head hurt. J.J. Abrams being attached to it doesn't help much either.
  • I like the dude who played the cult leader in Drive Angry, so I guess I could watch this. He needs his southern accent and soul patch back, though.
  • I would watch it if it had The Accountant in it.
  • I LOVE that guy.
  • I want that guy, Shane from The Shield, and Liz Lemon's beeper guy girlfriend/Mayhem insurance guy to start in a show where they play brothers. I don't know what it'd be about, but it'd be awesome

I wonder if it will be something like "we found the God particle... but den we broke it!!!!"
  • The electricity thing reminds me of this article. Uh, good thing the mysterious event somehow didn't affect the electrochemical reactions in our nervous systems, I guess?
  • I'm sure Mr. Abrams will find a way to painfully shoehorn some lame sort of retcon that explains it all by the 8th season.
  • It was cute at first but I was full on smiling with the other directors inputs. Good times.
  • Michael Bay's additions really bring the whole thing together.

Probably one of the nerdiest things I've thought of is trying to figure out which modifications to the laws of physics would be necessary to explain why wizards in Harry Potter can't use electrics/electronics/chemistry and have to use magic/potionmaking/alchemy instead. But like you said, biological electrochemical reactions still have to work normally. My initial thought was that quantum tunneling doesn't work, so nothing with a silicon semiconductor transistor would function, but I think some biological processes may rely on quantum phenomena as well.

If only they'd brought in some hard sci-fi consultants for this movie. Instead, I'm sure it will have the trademarked J.J. Abrams "big red ball of goop" from Alias/Star Trek/Mission Impossible 3 style plot devices.
  • I love Alan Rickman.

Considering that the wizards in Harry Potter are among the Muggles and the Muggles obviously have normal, real-world technology like cars and such, it's clear enough that it's just a matter of the wizards choosing to do their own thing and separate themselves from the sciences.

As for why they choose not to, it's made clear enough that the main reason is a strong bias against Muggles and against technology, but other factors may include being attached to tradition, magic being easier than science, and the wizards having various misconceptions about the real world.
  • Livin' the dream. They should make one of those where each player gets two guns.
  • I guess that's cool, but it would be better if he had purple hair and was a Chinese chick with an attitude.
  • There was no greater feeling as a kid to me than dual wielding while playing Jurassic Park: The Lost World at my local movie theater. I really wish there was a Dave and Busters in my area. It's probably been at least 4 years since I've played an arcade game.
  • ^I'll say it again: this show is fucking great and we need to enshrine it alongside Azumanga and Cromartie.
  • It's hard to judge something but one three minute clip, but that looks more like an Excel Saga and a lot less like an Azumanga Daioh or Cromartie.
  • I've always been under the impression Lacrosse was invented at Catholic prep schools.

  • @Dave: It does have some genre/trope parodies like that (they have another one where three guys do an imaginary game of Dragon Quest out of boredom), but I'd say most of it is situational comedy, which puts it more in the Azumanga/Cromartie mold than Excel Saga's mostly genre-parody wheelhouse.

Magic for them clearly developed in parallel to the way science did for us, with potion making substituting chemistry, combat spells substituting firearms and artillery, etc. But this could have been because they had to: they explicitly say that technology above a certain level will not work in areas too concentrated in magic-- specifically that electronics, radar, etc. will not work at Hogwarts (and presumably other similar areas). So I was wondering to what extent that holds true, and the mechanisms by which things like that could happen in physics terms.
  • Damn, I've been paying for electricity like a sucka.

  • Cute.

I have occasionally wondered if it would be worthwhile to try to use a micro water turbine generator on a house water supply line to try to capture some of that energy. My guess is that the intermittent water flow would be the primary limitation; though on a larger building, like a hotel or an apartment building, it might be less of an issue (assuming that the generator wouldn't kill the water pressure to upper floors).

  • Also, I have no idea why, but this was like only 2-3 clicks from JeffersonPierce's video.

  • I like this Hyadain guy.

  • Voice actors doing a reading of scenes of Star Wars. It's an hour long.
  • One of the best parts of the movie.
