This show also known as: Like Baron Harkonnen?

Limbo is pretty great. Kim Jong Il's a dick.

    Music Selection: BAGOOOOOOOOOOOSH.

    You suck.
  • File don't work.
  • I fixed it.
  • I just checked this game out with a friend and it is pretty awesome. We couldn't figure out how to get the acheivement with the cogs where you don't use the lever to slow them down though.
  • Is it just me or was Joel whispering while Dave was on his monologue on desserts? Or was he talking to Kathy?

Also, I gotta move on and get a damn current generation console to play all these awesome games you guys talk about. Limbo sounds like my kinda game.
  • Oreos vs. Twinkies is a tough call. I think orange hostess cupcakes beats them both, though.
  • Why the hate on Poker Smash? It's a fun little puzzle game.

Limbo looks neat and I shall check it out sooner or later.

Also, deep fried stick of butter? Worse food or worst food?

  • So what song is that at the end of the episode this time?
  • Hi Dave and Joel! I have decided to pester you on the interwebotron! I registered just to ask this, inspired by a marathon of all the back episodes - whatever became of Jaunty?
  • The song an OC Remix of some Sonic game. It's called Catapult.

Jaunty was my roommate's cat. He's probably dead.
  • Not knowing if Jaunty is alive or dead makes me sad. That was an awesome cat. I think I'll make a libation or burn a chapeu resting akimbo on a manequin's head for Jaunty.
  • Cats live for something like 20 years so unless it was killed or died of neglect it is probably still alive.
  • Did you every consider the fact that the cat could have been, well, 20 years old?
  • no, not really.
  • I guess we have to assume that the cat is both dead and alive...

Thank you again for your work doctor.

I look forward to the Golgo13 TV series episode and your commentary on a certain government organization that apparently is in the business of assassinations.
  • I say the cat is probably dead not because of his age, but because his owner was/is a useless human being. He was a good cat, even when he clawed at the door of my room in the middle of the night.

Or was that Porkchop? Every cat that ever lived in my apartment has melded into one super cat. JauntyPorkchopMystiqueCallan'sStupidCatSheNamedSomethingRetardedAndOurNameWasBetterGeneralLee(aka Migi)

I don't get the burning chapeu bit please explain.

  • I'm not really 100% on board with Greg Kott and Jim DeRogatis of Sound Opinions but they've led to me to good music here and there and it's one of the few shows that I listen to when I'm bored or need to pass time (which is like....all of the time)

And yes, they can get snarky. But honestly....when's the last time anybody listened to the song "Horchada"

As for limbo, just played the demo and I'm definitely getting Microsoft points tomorrow to get the full game. Thumbs up for the atmosphere
  • Limbo: What sounded annoying was the notion of "on one screen you learn some rules, and on the next screen those same rules get you killed with no prior indication".
  • That is true as far as I'm concerned but, as we said, you basically resurrect at a point just before you died so it's not onerous.
  • Limbo: What sounded annoying was the notion of "on one screen you learn some rules, and on the next screen those same rules get you killed with no prior indication".

I still sort of miss those days of game design. With tutorial levels and popup tooltips, gamers today just aren't allowed to fail and figure stuff out for themselves. When you got to a new boss in Gradius, or a new jumping puzzle in Mario, or a new level of Battletoads, it's not like anyone was furious and unreasonable at the game killing them. I think dying in games is now a lot more taboo because as games become more mainstream, players associate the Game Over screen with failure rather than learning. It's also increasingly the case that games let you learn moves in a "safe" environment, then "test" you by letting you do something in a real application.
  • I'm about half-way through the game and it's anything but annoying. The puzzle difficulty is perfect for me, and the well-designed checkpoints means zero frustration.
  • The NPR show I love to hate is On the Media. They just have this smug delivery I can't get over, like

If you want to hear something slightly different from the usual NPR fare, try Snap Judgment. They put it out as a podcast as well. Imagine a crazy black guy kidnapped Ira Glass and took over his show.

So video games have been commandeered by our educational system? No wonder I opted to play Earthbound again this week.
  • I finished Limbo last night so now I can listen to this podcast and not be spoilerzed. That game is so great, so beautiful and creepy. All the fun and atmosphere that I tried to make myself believe Braid had.
