Sooo....Some stuff have been going on, on 4chan
  • In my bi-weekly checking out of /b/ until I see something that disgusts my soul, I saw that they were busy preparing for this:

    http://gawker.com/5590166/11+year+old-viral-video-star-placed-under-police-protection-after-death-threats
    http://gawker.com/5589103/how-the-internet-beat-up-an-11+year+old-girl?skyline=true&s=i

It's one thing to just raid her youtube account, but they took it waaaay to far. Hacking her information,Death threats and most unfortunately getting her nude photos of herself. These actions are just too much. At the same time it's a good lesson for parents to really regulate their children's online activities especially with the way privacy on the seems to be shrinking.

This is the kind of thing that makes me scared of what the internet will be like like 20 years or so when I have teenage kids.
  • Having seen the first video that this girl posted, it was utter trash and its a life lesson that she needed to learn. I'm sorry that I feel utterly no sympathy for this girl (not that I support B-tards), but she posted incredibly obnoxious shit. Do they go to far with death threats and prank phone calls? Of course they do. Then again, these are the same assholes who take pleasure in posting videos of people dissecting kittens.

I feel sorry for Star Wars kid because he was unknowingly filmed. For bitchy 11 year old having her "haters" ruin her 11 year old life after she posted a "I'm better then everyone" video, not so much.

Oh and one other thing. It isn't "hacking" when someone googles your name, friends you on facebook, and posts information you yourself have posted. If you don't want this shit to get out, monitor your kid and what they post on facebook.

I feel utterly no sympathy for this girl, but I do hope someone on 4chan gets arrested over this simply because something happening to someone in that den of scum might be a good thing.

Yes, criminal conduct - like harassment and threatening phone calls - is inexcusable.

On the same token, though, you can't paint a bull's-eye on your ass and then complain when people take a shot at you, especially on the Internet.

This speaks more to the failure of the parents than anything else. Who lets their eleven year old have a webcam? Jeebus.
  • If I was in charge of the country I'd ramp up the orphanage system. There are too many people unfit to be parents.

This set up would also yield more Blue Brother scenarios. Win/win.
  • That speech the father cut was like an old Ultimate Warrior promo.

    I am loving this feud.
  • Is this even a feud? I feel like picking a fight with 4chan isn't feuding as much as it is signing your own death warrant. When the article called it a hive mind it wasn't being fascetious. They are a tireless horde of hateful teen agers. Wisdom dictates letting it slide and keeping a low profile for a while.
  • Honestly though, do these people look like they know the meaning of the word wisdom (let alone knowing how to actually use it)? Response messages are always a great way of dealing with people especially when the message is "my dad is going to get you for making me cry".

Also Good Morning America video is hilarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_sS1gwc7lk

Edit: Holy shit, this kid lives in my home town.

The problem is that a lot of people think that these 4channers (and people like them) are just wild kids who don't know how to behave, and that they just need a good talking-to. The general public has no idea how communities like 4chan enable and encourage crazy behavior.

Part of the issue is that every year sees thousands more people who are just getting started with this Microsoft Facebook thing, and the Internet doesn't exactly come with a warning label. People who've been using the internet for a long time tend to forget that, at one time, they didn't know not to post your home address, they didn't know that you don't reply to spam, they didn't know better than to click on porn ads.

So you get someone who says "oh cute, Susie posted a video of her cat, wait what are all these horrible things in the comments, get me Mister Youtube on the phone right away!"
  • It's not like the kid is blameless in this thing. She was on there recording herself spouting profanity and insults, and apparently her dad was doing the same thing. Talking smack on the Internet is going to provoke some sort of karmic bitch-slapping, generally speaking.
  • I'm not sure whether or not an 11-year-old can really be expected to anticipate that sort of thing. The reaction elsewhere is simply, "LOL she deserved it," while saying here, "Well, they went too far, but I don't feel sorry for her, I have no sympathy, etc." Was she acting in an inflammatory and antisocial way? Sure. Isn't everyone pretty insufferable at some point in their life? I've griefed people in online Warcraft 2 games, trolled AOL chat rooms and BBSes before words like "netiquette" were widespread. That's not as bad as what she did, but think of the worst online jackassery your middle school self was guilty of, and imagine if you'd been called out on it IRL via harassment. Though the internet's first reaction is schadenfreude (certainly, /b/ represents that aspect of everyone's personality in aggregate), it's important to remember that even though she's an idiot, she's a very young idiot, and anon's behavior goes beyond "taking a shot" at her on the internet. I'll wholeheartedly agree that the parents are clearly not on top of things, letting her release rants like this on the internet. I hope when a more tech-savvy generation comes to be parents, stories like this will at least diminish in number.
  • I'm not willing to associate the actions of an online community with a concept like karma. Just becasue a group of people have decided to do something despicable doesn't mean all those individuals lose their agency. She shouldn't have picked the fight but that doesn't exonerate the people harrassing her. I'm gonna go ahead trot out "two wrongs don't make a right" on this one.
  • [quote="The Joel"]"two wrongs don't make a right"
Two wrongs make me feel better....especially when one of those wrongs is a baseball bat
  • While I don't condone the actions, is this really a ramp-up of the usual? Just about every time I visit I can find a thread trying to ruin another (usually female) life, usually by finding someones nudes and emailing them to friends, family, workplaces and schools. I guess this is different since she's eleven, but it doesn't feel like they've hit a new level of awful to me.
Last I saw Boxxy had totally cut herself off from the internet completely after people actually went to her house. Or at the least she's learned how to put all her accounts to private since then.
While what the girl was doing may have been wrong or annoying (I don't know, I haven't watched the video because the idea of watching an 11 year old be annoying really doesn't appeal to me) the reaction is far to strong. This isn't another kitten killer, this is another dumb kid being a dumb kid.
  • The kid's youth and stupidity don't excuse the stupidity of her adult father, though. My impression was that the shit really hit the fan after her dad recorded himself doing some insane rant in response to people picking on his daughter on the Internet. If that's the case, he should have known better. And he should have been more on the ball regarding what his daughter was doing online. That kind of willful ignorance on the part of the parents is how we end up with shows like "To Catch A Predator".
  • Seriously, wtf is wrong with those people on 4chan. You're going to be caught as a pedo for even finding and saving those pictures. Your asses should be brought to jail and the site shut down.

    What are you talking about?
  • She's supposedly got n00dz on teh internets.
But I can tell by the pixels that they are chopped.
  • [quote="djdrastic"]But I can tell by the pixels that they are chopped.

I saw a few, but I did not look at them in great enough detail to judge their truthiness.
  • It's like every time you post it's with the sole purpose of making me hate you more.
  • OK, I'll explain a little more.

On Wednesday night, when I was trying to find out more about what was going on and I made a topic asking for the full details of /a/'s actions. Some people posted a few pictures of her and when I saw that thumbnailed picture of a nude a immidielty closed out my window have not been back to the site since.

    Is that better?
  • [quote="djdrastic"]She's supposedly got n00dz on teh internets.
But I can tell by the pixels that they are chopped.

Oh. I thought it was just a dumb kid talking shit and was met with cyberbullying.

    Stupid kids and their nudity.

The nude photos apparently came out after the 4chan trolls started digging, and as far as I can tell they may not exist. Granted, I haven't looked because the only reason a 25 year old man should search for nudes of an 11 year old girl is... well, never really.

Well, you could try to argue that it's art or something or....

    ...no, just no.
