My First Hater
  • Sweet! I feel like I have made it as a podcaster. Someone hates me.

    http://toyboxdx.com/phorum/read.php?5,166035

My favorite part is the part where he says, "That being said, I have downloaded and listened to every podcast you've done, even before they were publicly released. "

I guess he uses his psychic powers to siphon our podcasts directly from our brains as we do them, before I edit them and put them online.

Also it's not constructive cricticism when you include insults like omg i love to find trainwrecks on the internet to laugh at! and some people are just no good at public speaking and have no talent lolz!

excuse me i am good at public speaking i am the lead singer for a band and loved speech class :(

Seriously though, this is good for my ego. I'm elated that I got my first hatemail. Well, not hatemail. Hate... post.
  • ToyboxDX still exists?
  • It does! After like 90 years of inactivity, they upgraded it to a wordpress blog thing, posted like three articles and then went back to ignoring the site except to post dumb picture blogs of random close-ups of toys no one likes or Japanese auctions.
  • Congratulations Karaoke I knew you were able to do it :saucy:
  • It's weird that he says I sound bored but doesn't say that about Andrew, considering I'm the one always yelling and making snide remarks. Can't wait for hater number 2!
  • Congradulations, I'll have to check out a podcast that people hate. :D
  • You're lucky. I've been doing this podcasting thing for nearly a year now, and I haven't managed to accumulate Hater #1.

Curse my unfathomable skill, beauty, and brilliance!

Do not worry Goki you have me for saying that Serenity is an ok movie  When everyone knows that is was brilliant!
  • I get some hate mail for my stuff on Anime Jump, but it's rarely anything terribly interesting. I think I've gotten about...7 or so hate mails over the last 2.5 years.

So yeah, even at AJ we really don't bring in the hatemail anymore. Now we're mostly just spam magnets.

Actually there's one review that brings in 2-3 times more hate mail than any other review I've ever written. The funny thing is, it's not the one I would have ever expected. It did, however, cause one person to basically accuse me of being hateful towards depressed people (!!!).

But looking back at my old reviews is kind of interesting. I was kinda starting to mellow a bit as a reviewer (in attitude if not in writing), but after going so long without an outlet for the bile, I'm really feeling bloodthirsty again. I guess I really am addicted to pop-culture criticism, if I'm blue-ballin' over not bashing crap.

(Yeah, there's the blog, but I kinda want to get away from using it for reviews -- I'd like it make it more commentary/editorial-oriented.

Well, if you want I can send a mail ragging on you for not bashing Chronicles of Riddick hard enough. I hated every second of that movie, for the reasons you guys mentioned and many more...
  • Anime Jump still exists?

(no, seriously, are you guys ever going to get around to updating that site?)
  • [quote="RobotBastard"]Anime Jump still exists?

Actually Mike presumably still has about 4 or 5 reviews of mine, plus any that he's written or other reviewers have sent in over the last few months. The problem is, PostNuke (the CMS that AJ currently runs on) is busted to the point of being inoperable, and his job hasn't allowed him the time opportunity to convert it to some other format.

So yeah, AJ still exists, but pretty much everyone is wondering when it's finally going to get going again.
  • Hey guys, thanks for the support.

Paul, I can't hate your podcast ever. It has Katherine on it. Sometimes. She is a criticism deflector, because you know the intertron is 90% boys who are socially retarded and too scared to talk to girls. Hey, your mom might even be able to deflect criticism too! Amazing! :)

Winter, I used postnuke on the previous iteration of masterforce.org (when I had actually hosting and wasn't just using a blog) and I never had problems like that. That sucks hardcore, but I dunno what went wrong. Postnuke worked fine for me. :(
  • Actually (I found got around to listening to them all!), I don't think you sound bored with what you talk about, but you just sound like you're taking the topic too seriously. If you aren't in the same room while you're doing this, then that might explain it a bit, but still maybe just some more having fun would make it sound less forced.

Then again, I say this as someone who had never listened to a podcast before Fast Karate, and now only listens to Fast Karate and Greatest Movie Ever. Sometimes Ninja Consultants, but just for diversity.
  • I think we are trying to walk the line between serious criticism and just making fun of shows. Wait until you hear the next podcast. Oooo man, we do not take THAT one too seriously. Or maybe we take it WAY too seriously! You decide! film at 11! Thanks for the feedback!
  • You know you've made it when a Ramen Stained , badly shaved putrid BO geek sh!ts all over your comment blog
  • [quote="LCom"]... maybe just some more having fun would make it sound less forced.
I agree with LCom on this one. I listened to the 08th MS Team podcast, and it sounded like most of what you're saying is clear and deliberate - which is okay sometimes, but it dampens the tone a little bit. There were a few times when it got more lively (like when - in the afformentioned podcast - you questioned how far they had to go to get from the desert to a snowy mountain), and that's more entertaining, because it sounds more like two dudes having a fun conversation. Just try to pick up the tempo and liven up the tone, and you guys are golden.

I too am in the same boat, though probably for a different reason. I'm reluctant to listen to a podcast that doesn't have a solely audio feed. A lot of podcasts to which i might listen more regularly only have feeds that go to posts on their sites. While that's cool and all, i can more easily justify listening to a podcast at work if i can go directly to the mp3 without navigating around a site that's obviously not related to work.

    I'm looking at you guys:
Anime World Order, Ninja Consultants, Destroy all Podcasts

(p.s. - if any of you already have an audio feed, i apologize, but i just could not find it)
  • I don't know anything about how RSS works AT ALL and Josh does all of that technical stuff for me. If you can teach me how to do an audio only feed I will happily do one? Or I will ask Josh about it.

Basically, an RSS feed is a properly formatted XML file.
Greatest movie ever has a good example: http://www.fearthegooberzilla.com/TheGreatestMovieEVER!Podcast.xml
Fast Karate is similar, but it has an xml stylesheet attached to it to make it more readable: http://feeds.feedburner.com/daveandjoel

There are some basic RSS examples here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS

RSS 2.0 seems to be a lot more straight forward.

Basically, you want the "<link>" element to point to an mp3 as opposed to a post.
  • nuts. my url tags didn't work. :(
  • djdrastic: So what would I do, copy my existing RSS feed address into that box?
  • xeno: So I what, make this XML file thing and then edit it every time I make a new podcast? And it's just dumped on the server?
  • That's how I do it. There are probably more efficient ways, but I'm not smart enough to figure 'em out. I just use a program to do the grunt work of mine (RSS Editor, Feed Editor, Feed Spring, whatever). That leaves all the html-type garbage out and just lets you type into fields. Better than nothin'.
  • Listen to the Dave.
  • That sounds like a lot of effort, especially after spending two evenings editing the podcast. Hmm. There's gotta be away to get this done for me.
  • Okay, i looked into it again and came up with something that at least helps me.

The way i was dealing with the podcast feeds was to let the FireFox live bookmark feature handle it. It's a very basic feed reader, so it can handle RSS, RSS2.0, maybe Atom, and a couple other styles of feeds. If you create a live bookmark from an RSS feed, it will use the <link> sub-element of <item> as the URL to which the user is directed. The <item> element can have the sub-element <enclosure> which describes a media object attached to the <item>. It looks like the normal format of a podcast feed is to use the <enclosure> element to list the link to the mp3 (as opposed to using the <link> element). Since Fast Karate and Greatest Movie use both the <link> and <enclosure> elements to point to the mp3, using a live bookmark to read their feeds worked out okay. The other podcasts i mentioned use the <enclosure> element to point to the mp3 and the <link> element to point to the post with the show notes, so the live bookmark method did not work for them.

As a workaround, i hunted down a feed reader that can handle podcast styled feeds. If i'm the only person who complains about it, you may as well leave it be. But if you get more, you may want to make a minor adjustment to the way you format your feed.

    Handy links...

  • I am too retarded for this. Forwarding it on to Josh.
  • I think it's funny that my RSS feed is provided as an example of a good RSS feed, when I don't even really know what RSS stands for. I do know that people that use iTunes require them. I also know that the lame-o podcast creation software I use (which crashes if I look at it wrong) helps me to generate the feed automatically, although I have to manually add each new item now because whenever it creates a new entry it erases all the previous ones.

Also, I got my first hater today. Check it out:

"Weak , the Front Page was a total D&J ripoff

    front-beat
    May 10th, 2007"

    OH SNAP! :saucy:
I'd feel a little more out-raged if his statement wasn't God's honest truth. When Dave and Joel migrated to WordPress, I followed; in the process I shamelessly stole their new show-notes format, because the old format was a hassle to maintain.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery.

(I probably don't need to point out the irony of being called a Dave and Joel rip-off artist by a poster whose handle is itself a Dave and Scabs rip-off...)
  • Okay, THAT one I know. RSS = Really Simple Syndication.
