Eh, the typical annying anime elements are in such small and spread out doses I barely even notice them
I do wish the main character wasn't typical bish, but whatever, the veritech fights are all fucking awwwwwesome.
What I like is how Macross F is trying to cram every single Macross into the same show--and I can't help but think that the bishounen main character is a reference to the whole "Robotech" thing, i.e. "Yellow" from Mospeada.
Man I have such mixed feelings about Macross F. As with Aquarion this show has pretty much the best use of 3d mecha one could ever hope for. The action scenes looks sweet and are exciting.
The story though so far seems really uninspired. First of all they are trying way too hard to Homage original Macross. They have Misa, They took Minmay from DYRL, and Minmay from the TV series (with an extra Moe makeover) and replaced Hikaru with an emo prettyboy.
The shot for shot re-enactments of scenes from the original series was cute... but MUCH more clever when they did it in Eureka 7.
I had a really sick feeling in the pit of my stomach with the Love Hina moment of accidental STATUTORY RAPE in the cockpit, but overall my impression of episode 2 was promising. I do wish they'd kept the DYRL cover ending song from the pilot though.
So far A for animation, C for character design and a probationary B- for story
I just finished watching it and even though I really wanted to hated because of the moe character. I can't. I can't hate Macross. I really enjoyed all the homages scenes they put on this show, I was like "yeah, remember that". Also, what is up with all the spanish pseudo-names such as Habilar and Alto( which means High or stop depending of the sentence).
I'd like to see someone do a bit like that with a Strike Valkyrie; the "gun" pack becomes a giant over-the-shoulder sniper-rifle, and the "missile" pack becomes some big telescope thing.
[quote="karaokeninja"]So it's bad when they echo an earlier Macross scene but good when they echo an earlier Macross SONG? Huh?
In a word yes. a cover of a good song is cool. an homage to a cool shot is cool... unless it is done in the same "world" as the original... in which case it is either just lazy or pandering. It's rather like all the lines from the original star wars films that they unnaturally inserted into Genndy Tartakofski's otherwise awesome Clone wars cartoons. Those things grated my nerves terribly.
On the other hand the Homage to the "pulling minmay into the cockpit scene" that they did in Eureka seven was really cool. (as were the homages to original Gundam's Ranba Rall)
[quote="karaokeninja"]I'm totally excited by the VF Sniper. That's even cooler than the GM Sniper.
It's certainly more sniper-y. I gotta agree with you.
Anyway I don't mean to make it sound like I don't like the show. I think it has a lot of potential. In the end the Moe thing is really the only thing that could hurt it. Pink haired jailbait in Macross 7 was a hell of a lot less distressing as Mylene was at least a solid character.
Oh, and I was watching the CDX Legioss review, and it occurred to me that it's another Mospeada reference: the fact that the Valkyries have little sub-units that let the pilot jump out and fly around.
Not at all. Also it's hardly the first time that Macross has ripped off something from Robotech. The whole brain washing holographic thing that the Marduk had in Macross 2 was lifted straight out of southern cross.
Thought to be fair the design of the whole sub unit thingys reminds me way more of detonator Orgun than Mospeada.

The words coming from your keyboard are like shit going directly into my eyes. Southern Cross existed on its own just fine before Robotech was a gleam in Carl Macek's eye. Please.
There's also the fact that both Southern Cross and Macross were both Super Dimension shows. So it's more like Macross 2 took something from another show within the same metaseries by the same company.

No shit Jeremy, but Macross 2 none the less borrowed from southern cross... an EXTREMELY obscure show in Japan. Given the popularity of Robotech in the west it's always been my opinion that it's more likely that they got the inspiration from there.
I am the last person to preach to about SC. back in the day I even contributed to the SC universe web site. (Pictures of my LD box where on there)
[quote="karaokeninja"]oh noez big west recycled one of its own ideas end of world
Big West had jack all to do with Southern Cross or the original Macross series for that matter. Tatsunoko had the rights to both... and squandered them... which is the ONLY reason we have ANY macross in the US today. Not that Tatsunoko had much to do creatively with Macross.
3rd ep of Macross F was pretty decent IMO. Alto is starting to become an actual character.
Ranka still really bothers me... It's very hard to believe that she is supposed to be the same age as Minmay was at the beginning of Macross. Maybe it's because I see things with a cynical eye, but everything seems so engineered to hit every otaku demographic. I'd like to expect more from Macross.
Overall though It's a pretty good show, though riding on some pretty huge coat tails.
That's funny, because I could have sworn EVERY EPISODE OF SOUTHERN CROSS SAYS BIG WEST ON IT. Maybe I imagined that. Oh wait, no, I didn't. :P
Give me a break.
Yes, much of the talent in Southern Cross was Tatsunoko in-house staff like Ammonite and the director, but it was still a Big West show. And furthermore, why the fuck would you think Japanese anime artists would know the American alteration of a show their own company worked on but not the Japanese show itself? Come on. Do you know how Aliens was released in Japan? How familiar are you with the Indian release of Die Hard? Yeah right.
Anyway, I hate Ranka, especially now that she's even more useless and moe
Spoiler:
("omg i has amnesia 'cause i'm traumatized"), but at least she's not actually related to Ozma, who is cool.
VF Sniper continues to be super badass and I dig Sheryl.
Spoiler:
("Screw waiting in this capsule to die!") I also dug how she told tranny boy she would ruin him if pictures of her tits showed up on the Internet, but that it was cool if he wanted to go home and jack off to the memory of her briefly bared breasts. Sheryl is cool.

Eep. My bad. Guess it's been to long since I actually watched the show. I wonder if that was prominent in the Japanese credits? By the time I ever got around to getting the ADV DVDs I was skipping the ops and eds.
As for the other stuff. Yeah it might be a dumb theory. It's just one that I developed early on given that NO Japanese anime fan I ever talked to had ever heard of the show. But you are of course right if Big West did both.

That is exactly what I am saying... It is about as subtle as a brick to the head and it REALLY sucks you out of the show. Ozma is pretty cool. I like how he bitch slapped Alto in ep 2.

She's surprising me a little. I didn't have much hopes for her as a character.
I'm disappointed that they haven't really done anything with Misa yet.
Wait so because Macross 2 and Southern Cross feature brainwashing, that means Macross 2 took stuff from Southern Cross? So the idea of brainwashing can't be from some other sci-fi anime?
As for Big West and Southern Cross, Big West totally owns Southern Cross. It's no where to be found on Tatsunoko's own website (it should come after Mospeada) and yet Big West has it on their site next to Orguss. I've even heard from Tommy Yune by way of Roger Harkavy that Big West's ownership of Southern Cross's merchandising rights has basically left Robotech with nothing but Mospeada stuff.
I think the reason it is similar is that it is brainwashing alien clones via music, which is a lot more specific, but again, it's two Big West shows, so big deal.
[quote="ATM 09 SCOPEDOG"] Ozma is pretty cool. I like how he bitch slapped Alto in ep 2.
So: Ozma= Roy Focker, so that means Ozma will die eventually (OMG SPOILERZ ROY DIES ) Ranka= Min Mei, so that means she will kind of grow up a little. Maybe just maybe when she stop having amnesia we will see her true personality and she will be a crazy awesome pilot (hey she is 1/4 zentraedi so maybe she will channel Milia, I wanna believe) Alto= Hikaru, so that means his character will develop. Cheryl= I guess she is like Misa in the way that she really cares for what she does best.

I don't remember Minmay being a
Spoiler:
retarded amnesiac who can't even function as a normal human being.
Alto is totally not at all like Hikaru, and EVERY character should develop. Sheryl is not at all like Misa, she's a stone cold bitch. Misa was just married to her job. Sheryl rules. She would chew Misa up and spit her out on the deck.
There's a UN Spacy chick who is just like Misa already, so just point that way. Sheryl is a lot more like old school Miria. Misa was never this bold. Compare how Misa behaved in captivity with Hikaru (fight fight whiiiiine) to how Sheryl acts (
Spoiler:
shows her boobs, decks Alto, and then tries to jump into vacuum so she doesn't have to slowly suffocate).
I need to watch episode 3, also from what I have read it looks like Sheryl is very hard core. Also, what is up with Sheryl being surprised when Ranka sings on ep. 2.
Spoiler:
I do not want to speculate but, the way Sheryl acts is as if she has nothing more left to live for, so maybe Ranka will take her place when the series finish, also the title of the what it looks like the last episode from wikipedia is "Bye bye Sheryl"

I was thinking specifically about the holographic trainer thingy that the other emulator was supposed to look at to set her straight. It's been at least 10 years since I watched Macross 2 so I could be imagining the whole thing. (God that show sucks)

I'd say that is a near certainty. Which will make it totally meaningless when it happens cause we will all know it's coming.
I have to agree with Karaoke about the rest. Sheryl is in no way like Misa except she's older. If you want to draw a comparison to an existing character she is a bit like the older Minmay in DYRL. But I think she is probably the only interesting character in the show.
Ranka is SUPPOSED to be the young Minmay, but really she is just fap material for the lowest breed of otaku and shouldn't be in the show at all.
I have no idea where they are going with Alto. Maybe they will surprise us and suddenly make him badass, but I don't have a whole of of hope.
I dunno. We got all the way through "Macross Zero" without the putative main character turning onto a badass. And technically, in the original Macross Hikaru was never all that great of a pilot; he was just really good at "not dying", and in the First Zentradei War that was pretty much the best route to promotion.
[quote="ATM 09 SCOPEDOG"]I have no idea where they are going with Alto. Maybe they will surprise us and suddenly make him badass, but I don't have a whole of of hope. I dunno, Alto's all angsty 'cause people keep calling him pretty or something. Maybe he'll turn his bishounen rage into badassery.
So what? How many competitions did Hayao win? ZERO.
Even Roy got shot and he was a space badass super pilot. It's war. Shit happens. One of the times he got shot down it was by HIS GIRLFRIEND. Another "shot down" time was in a FIST FIGHT WITH BRITAI. Roy just got shot by some Q-Rau.
Okay, so an amateur pilot suddenly gets shot at and doesn't know how to react? That's the equivalent of an amateur driver (say... you) not knowing how to react when a race car driver tries to force you off the road or when Mad Max shoots at you out of the window of his armageddonmobile.
The term ACE PILOT only means you have shot down X number of enemies. Hikaru had shot down ZERO at that point, which means he wasn't an ace, obviously.
Hikaru was that way so the audience could relate to him, someone not so awesome but that does not give up and just go forward. Alto is the same way, I mean he was the only one from the group of three guys that was out of the underground fighter squat. It looks like we only have 3 ep. left so I hope they do something interesting pronto.
