Are we doing an Olympics Thread?
  • I didn't know if people on here were going to keep up with the olympics or not, but I just made a thread anyways.

This kinda sucks, because the Womens Weightlifting is happening, yet I have been trying to find a stream of it on line. After seeing that vid in the Random Locked thread, I have something to look forward too.

There are 2 BBC channels online to watch this stuff also:

    BBC 1 http://tvpc.com/Channel.php?ChannelID=3
    BBC 3 http://tvpc.com/Channel.php?ChannelID=9618
  • Just watched some archery. When did Olympic-level bows get so crazy? Elaborate sights, balancers, vibration dampers. The bows look some kind of cyberpunk sniper bow. Kinda cool.
  • Missed the opening ceremony thanks to a late shift at work and today missed all things Olympics related due to a bad stomach bug. I'm hoping to catch it later on the BBC Iplayer once I feel better.
  • Yo why can't the olympics just be our new wars, like the g gundam fights.
  • YEAH, DG, YEAH!
  • Watched some of the US vs. Korean women's volleyball game. The Korean team was adorable, and as an added bonus wore very short shorts. I think watching gorgeous women be really really good at what they do has finally provided me with motivation to actually care about the Olympics.
  • I never found the Womens Weightlifting on tv, probably because NBC thinks anything outside Track & Field, Vollyball, Basketball, Swimming, Gymnastics and Cycling would bore american viewers.

Well, if you mean G Gundam fights, you might as well mean the Robot Jox universe.
  • Aw man, I really wanted to see that too. Wasn't Samantha Wright taking part in that? Also I believe NBC is streaming everything, even if they won't be broadcasting it.
  • I checked the weightclass for the Womens weight group that I thought she was in, but here name isn't showing up. But if she is, they should show it tomorrow.

I have my olympic crush on that hottie from Iraq: http://www.london2012.com/athlete/abdul-razak-dana-1051321/
  • Truly, if the Olympics is good for anything, it's for showing that incredible beauty can be found in women of every nation.

That and instructing us to obey our corporate masters and buy [insert sponsor here]'s products for world betterment.
  • Yea, because of the games, I am finding out that any country bordering Europe has hot women in it somewhere. I just kept saying "mmm, I should totally go to that country I have never heard of till just now."
  • I had literally the same reaction. Especially to Jordan, oddly enough; I was like man, that's on my bucket list now. Also, is it just coincidence that like 99% of all Olympic athletes are incredibly photogenic?
  • Given that they are almost all, by necessity, very physically fit - I'm guessing not entirely.
  • Those weightlifting women are really strong, some of them lift more then twice their bodyweight over their head, which is just insane. Sadly Samantha Wright is nowhere near olympic level when it comes to weightlifting, maybe in a couple of years, she is gorgeous though. Has anyone seen that 16 year old chinese swimmer who won gold and on top of that was able to beat the world record? It is just amazing that a 16 year old is able to accomplish that.

  • Cycling was kinda shitty. There was an early breakaway and no one wanted to help Britain pull it back because they have the fastest sprinter and winner of the Tour de France.
  • Yea that one dude from Kazakhstan won the one from yesterday, which hes been doing this for like 15, 20 years or something.
  • I feel like since NBC is editing and waiting to air some sports for primetime, they shoudl just go all out and just re-edit that shit like its a sports anime with athletes having and shouting their special moves, slowing down the action for inner monologues and conversations, and making random atheletes have anime personality archetypes.
  • You would think, but NBC isn't Shonen Jump minded. Although that would make any sporting event like 10 times better, or maybe worse.
  • Definitely worse, considering that then every game would take the length of a regular season to complete.
  • Dude, I had no clue NBC acted like that. My mom was upset because they decided to do 5 second summaries of the countries that didn't air during their "commercial breaks" when it was clearly a tape delay. By the time the countries were airing on NBC, the ceremony was finishing up on the BBC stream. And pretty much what I said about NBC a few post before is all they have been showing since the games have started.

And I don't see Romney apologizing for what he said, because he thinks he is right. Just more of a reason for me to vote for Ron Paul.
  • UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
  • Yeah, ditto what DG said. Rick Santorum is the obvious choice.

I heard about the tape delay, and that was really lame... but they ALSO skipped countries? I thought the whole point of the tape delay was so they wouldn't have to do that?
  • When we were watching it they would frequently show 2 second bursts of 5 countries between the longer showings of other ones.
  • Perhaps I am blindingly retarded, but how does having a six-hour time delay on the opening ceremony translate into "money grabbing?"
  • So they could add commercials?
  • Isn't it more so more people can actually watch the thing in prime time when they are home from work and can actually watch television.
  • For the QUEEN!
  • A Korean competitor got screwed over because the timer glitched. The worst part is that she was forced to go into her next match immediately after being denied the appeal. http://deadspin.com/5930219/a-south-korean-fencer-is-refusing-to-leave-the-piste-after-being-screwed-out-of-a-chance-at-gold
  • I was hoping he got into judo because of charizard's signature move: seismic toss.
  • ^^ That's fucked up
  • Yea, even the Olympics has "The Man" bringing people down.
  • Hell, the Olympics is one big money generating exercise for The Man anyway (and it doesn't even generate that much profit).
  • The fact that you gotta have "cash on hand" to appeal a decision is like trying to deal with the Mob or something.
  • Well, who's going to argue the IOC isn't running a racket at this point?
  • The NCAA?
  • What is the reason for the cash appeals thing? Is it some kind of weird deposit idea to keep people constantly asking for frivolous appeals or are they just selling appeals? What the hell is that? I mean they can tell the time, right? They've got it on film, can't they review and maybe not get within their hundredth of a second but know if someone laid a hit in time or not.
  • My Korean wife reckons it was a conspiracy against Asians.
  • I think they didn't have the money "on hand" to pay them off. Plus I heard China did that on another event but they handed a form and a wad of american 100's to the judges, so you know they come prepared.
  • Nah, it was Japan in the men's gymnastics, they bought the dude a silver medal. Original score of 13~ something after a horrible dismount. Coach appealed the score, bump it up to 14~ something. WTF mate?
  • So the amount of the appeal and circumstances vary:

    http://www.slate.com/blogs/five_ring_circus/2012/07/31/shin_a_lam_why_do_you_have_to_pay_money_to_protest_an_olympic_judge_s_decision_.html

The money sort of makes sense-- it limits the amount of frivolous appeals, and punishes those who know that the score is deserved and are hoping to squeeze extra points out. Furthermore, it's not a "fee," it's a deposit. Which is to say, appeals that end up changing a ruling end up in the deposit (which is like $100-$500, so not really bribe quality money) being returned anyhow. Further, the article says that the IOC itself doesn't mandate a specific procedure, which is why it is different for every sport; it's set by whatever international federation runs the thing.

So aside from the judges making a crazy ruling, it's also the Korean coaches' fault for not properly filing the appeal.

In any case, we can't blame the IOC for any appeals deposits, nor is it a bribe.
  • That makes it sound less sketchy, so now I don't dislike the IOC too badly.
  • Well, not for this, anyway. I do agree that without any explanation, seeing a country's coach run to the judges with some CA$H MONEY and then having a score change may give people the wrong idea.
  • So I recently read about the badminton players losing on purpose and being disqualified. I assumed it was some game fixing thing, but then it turned out to be because they strategically wanted to lose the match.

Personally, I think it's bullshit that they were DQed, though I understand why they were: your sport has become a mockery on a worldwide stage, and the ruling body is under pressure to act in order to salvage its image.

I'm with David Sirlin in his article here. If a tournament organizer has created a situation where a player going out on the court and giving it their all is AGAINST their best interests, that's not the fault of the players. Sirlin puts it best when he says if such a situation is unavoidable, allowing players to forfeit is vastly more preferable than having them go out onto the court and sandbag hard.
  • And now one of the Chinese girls has quit the sport.

In other news our Aussie swimmer formerly know as James "The Missile" Magnussen has talked the talk. But couldn't walk the walk and two silver medals later, we're all calling him a CHOKER.
  • Badminton: The problem comes from using a type of tournament that isn't single-elimination.

Which, y'know, it's the friggin' Olympics. We're all grown-ups here (well, except for the Chinese gymnasts.) I think people can handle getting knocked out in the first match.
  • Low blow RB!

I'd just like to point out who's leading the medal tally in gold medals...
  • Maybe Ryan Lochte is just a slower swimmer then Ye Shiwen. Western arrogance once again, only white people can swim. Everyone else is on drugs.

Relevant. Now I need to find a way to covertly enter Olympic Village.
