Hard-Boiled Wonderland [...] (June 2012)
  • June's book is Hard-Boiled Wonderland [...] by Haruki Murakami. I've heard so many things from so many people over the years about Murakami, but I've always put off reading him. I shall soon know whether or not to regret that delay.
  • How much Chow Yun-Fat does this book contain?
  • I left off about halfway through after getting distracted by something else (as is my wont), but I loved what I read of it. Guess I should go back and finish it soon.
  • I've read The Wind Up Bird Chronicle and have 19Q4 holding a table down. Looking forward to this one.
  • This is the only Murakami i've read (I'll go back and finish Wind Up Bird Chronicle someday), I picked it up after hearing it was an influence on the anime series Haibane Renmei. I liked it, looking forward to the discussion.

    Don't worry, it's non-saturated Chow Yun-Fat.
  • ^^Oh yeah, I think that's why I picked it up too. It was striking to see just how big an influence it was, too.
  • I haven't clicked that link yet. Are all the spaces "talks about spaghetti"?
  • 4 chapters in so far. I have no idea what the hell is going on other then data laundering and people being stabbed in the eyes and some shit about bone harmonics. I like this book.
  • I think I actually started to read that once, I'll need to get a hold of it again.
  • About 1/3 of the way though. I like this well enough to look into some of the author's other works. What is worth checking out?
  • A good chuck of the way through. I am enjoying the End of the World parts a bit more then the Hard-Boiled Wonderland parts. Comparisons to The Prisoner seem appropriate. I will most likely finish it up this weekend.
  • You're ahead of me! I am still playing catch-up after six weeks of madness. Catherine loaned me her copy, so I will begin reading soon.
  • I'm on summer break so I have little to do but work, read, and drink. One thing I will say is that I find the pace both fast and slow, especially the Hard-Boiled Wonderland story. The chapters go by quickly, but I don't feel like much happens in any single one.
  • Finished it. I enjoyed it enough to order a copy of 1Q84. What is everyone else thinking about it.
  • Finished chapter one. Homeboy loves an LA face with an oakland booty.
  • I finished it yesterday. It was pretty good, but I wasn't really satisfied with the ending.
    Spoiler:
Navel gazing is an appealing way to approach self actualization, but I don't think you can really unpack your identity without the input of others.
It was pretty creative and it did include the requisite Murakami-isms. My favorite wink to the reader was later in the book when the girl in pink explains why you can't look at an INKling. I had just been wondering how that whole arch would be resolved if it was going to be resolved. I actually chuckled.
  • I just finished this as an audiobook. They got a couple of talented narrators to read it. It's a grade-A production.
The book itself was enjoyable enough that I'm tempted to check out more Murakami. Though I've got to agree with Joel about the ending. It seemed like a very Eastern thing for the main character to do. But maybe I need to digest it some more since I just finished it about fifteen minutes ago.
