The Official Guild Wars 2 Thread (Now with officiousness)
  • I will Guild Wars 2 with people.

I pre-ordered, so I'm in the beta this weekend. Couldn't find the old thread. Did it exist, or was it but a fevered Chopinesque dream?
  • Played the beta. The controls were pretty awesome. There's a dodge button, and auto-attack is retained. I enjoyed just strafing a circle around a boss and without having to worry about clicking on "attack." Swimming is also much better than most MMORPGS. You can actually go underwater and fight creatures. Also, I like how the first two skills are mapped to weapons. Maxing out every weapon my class knows was a pleasant diversion from quests and made the grinding fun.

Rezzing is a bit of a mixed bag. Other players can heal you at any time after you die. However, self-rezzing is more complicated. You need a couple of gold to rez at a checkpoint. If you don't have the gold, you kind of have to wait for somebody to rez you. Which wasn't too bad for me at the time, because other players get XP for rezzing someone (about as much as killing an enemy), and the place was crowded. There's also enough gold tossed around that running out of money isn't much of a problem. Still, it sucks to wait. There's also a chance to save yourself before death, much like in Borderlands. If you can kill an enemy or bring your health back up by hitting buttons on a unique "death" skillbar before you're well and truly dead, you're back in the game.

The "Events" were pretty rad as well, and really emphasized the importance of community. It took like 20 people to bring down this giant 200 ft. tall fire colossus, but the effect of seeing such an epic battle cannot be understated.

Character Creation was pretty intricate as well. Much more intricate than any other MMORPG I've played. It's almost Skyrim quality. And it gives you a lot of choices regarding the character's backstory, much like Mass Effect. I didn't have to play long for these choices to have an impact on the storyline. One of the choices if you're a Charr for example was "What was your father like." I chose the option of him being a disgrace of a soldier, and in one of the story quests, he goes AWOL and I have to track him down.

All in all, I'm pretty impressed with the beta. The only downside is that I was incapable of teaming up with my friends because when the server's full, they send you to an "overflow" location, and you have to wait in a queue before being put in the "real" server. The wait was just too long. The designers have said that this will be fixed before the final game.
  • Sounds pretty neat. I went to try to preorder and join the beta last weekend, but they were conveniently "sold out" of both the digital edition and the digital deluxe edition, and I didn't quite want the beta weekend so badly that I was willing to buy the super-ultra mega collectors edition with Charr statuette just to pull that off.
  • ^ Same story here.

I'm hoping to have enough friends interested in this game that it replaces LoL.

Nothing is going to replace LoL.
  • I played an engineer. He had healing turrets. I just love healing people with bullets.
  • There's guns in Guild Wars now? I may have to look into this.
  • Uh, yeah. Healing turrets sounds awesome.

Actually, the thing that has me most interested in Super Monday Night Combat is the character who drops kitten turrets that you can then buff to make them shoot lasers.
  • There's guns in Guild Wars now? I may have to look into this.

There is ghostbusting in Guild Wars 2.
  • Holy. Shit. And here I thought I would only be picking up Diablo 3 this month.
  • Somebody put up a video from the beta. It features the same class and race I picked, so it follows the story of a young charr who invents a gun that can kill ghosts even deader than usual. There's a story quest where you choose how to weaponize this technology...either into a giant canon or several smaller turrets. I thought that was pretty neat.

I didn't play any PvP, but here's a good review from people at Gamebreaker that really enjoyed the world vs. world gameplay. I guess weather machines are involved that can hinder your opponents? Seems cool.

  • I played the thief and the necromancer in the latest beta.

The thief is a very active class that relies a lot on teleporting in and out of battle. It probably has the most options in terms of weapons, as it is a dual-wielding class. Since a lot of skills are tied into the weapon you're using, dual-wielding opens up a lot of skill variety. The skills you learn while wielding a gun in your primary hand and a dagger in your off-hand are even different than the skills you learn with the same weapons in different hands. There was a pretty neat skill where I stabbed a guy with a dagger, teleported back a few feet, and then shot him with a gun.

Necromancer had a lot of familiar skills like Chillblaines, but the best one involves you transforming into a lich-like being that shoots green fireballs at people. You get a new skill bar when you transform into this creature, and the screen goes into a fuzzy green state that looks pretty cool.

My buddy was rocking a ranger, and he seemed to have the ability to go back and forth between his animal companions pretty easily. He also had a skill that involved a flock of birds swooping down and devouring his targets that looked pretty cool.

All in all, I can't wait until I have the final version in my hands.
  • The game officially launches next tuesday. Since I pre-ordered, though, I get to start on Friday. I'm starting a guild on the Yak Bend server if people are interested.
  • I've made an engineer on Yak Bend. Salynt
  • I also have an engineer. Scramm Witworth.
  • I've got a warrior on yak's bend you can invite. Name's Eris Kali Discordia
  • ill be on yak's bend as well although im willing to join anyone on any server once my gaming pc is back up and running

sucks having a broken computer when your in the guild wars 2 3 day head start

  • World vs. World is pretty amazing. I never tried it out on the beta, but the fact that sieges actually feel like sieges is a testament to the attention to detail. Waiting outside the keep and dodging boiling oil as you're trying to knock down the gate while your comrades bring in supplies to build siege weapons is a very unique experience. You also have the option of focusing on guerilla tactics with a smaller bunch of people and hijacking supply carts or lumber mills. There's even something single players can accomplish by themselves, such as taking out sentries posted on the roads. Very fulfilling so far.
  • Alright there needs to be some organization. I don't know if there will be the people from WoW trying this out but if we are all planning on dipping in at some point and since it is only a one time payment it looks more and more appealing to me. I swore mmos off, or so i thought. The moment I see characters rolling I desecrate my pants and the memories of sweet ass world of warcraft raiding come flowing back.

I guess this is more of just a fishing post to see if the people from Kung Fu scientists are thinking about getting into this jam, and if not what new people from the forum that I keep no track of are willing to band together so I am compelled to go out and buy the game with my free Alaska oil monies.
  • The Guild name is Pugilists Inc. I'll send invites to people who want them.
  • i'll join the guild

    server: yaks bend

    Character name: Gnashmash

    friend code: Freakzilla.4386

I will always be down for some organized WvW and/or PvE events. I haven't really gotten into the game yet due to dark souls but i will once i get threw this new dlc.
  • no prob. WvW levels everybody up to 80. The skills and equipment of a new player might not be ideal, but they can still be competitive.
  • We also do a poor man's teamspeak on Skype. My Skype handle is dreg4life.
  • Use Dave's vent so I can jump in yell at you then leave.
  • You should go in and yell DREG FO LYFE
  • new friend code Emmet.2943
  • You should go in and yell DREG FO LYFE

I will also assert my belief that there is only one love to be found in the world.

I don't know what that is. Ventrilo? Is there an IP for that or something?
  • Man, the overflow idea does not seem to be implemented well in party making. It's still a dice roll if you'll be able to play with your friends in PvE. And WvW seems to have a long wait time involved now that the game's launched.
  • I'm considering buying the game, but first I need to know if the client uses P2P to download it. My school blocks P2P so I don't want to buy something I won't be able to play.
  • I have this game now, so prepare for .... something. I haven't had a chance to make a character yet.
  • I will be picking up a copy this weekend. I played the hell out of the first Guild Wars.
I'm excited to play a ranger once again.

    My body is ready.

  • I'm playing this game. I'm on Sea of Sorrows, though, since many of my friends seem to be playing there.
  • So character's are locked to server they are created on? In the first Guild Wars it wasn't that way. :/
  • well one of the cool things is you can be in multiple guilds and you can be in guilds with people on different servers.

Did some WvW today and damn is Yak's Bend owning we took everything so i spent a few hours with a group of 20 other people going around and killing some of the special WvW bosses was really fun fought a giant larva and a giant elemental tree. I wanted to do the WvW dungeon but i have no idea were the entrance is.
  • You can transfer servers, I believe.
  • Yeah, server transfers are free for awhile, but they may cost some gold in the future. Also, while you can be in multiple guilds on multiple servers, guild influence is tied to 1 guild and 1 server. If you play a lot on Yak's Bend, the influence you earn is only good in Yak's Bend. If you move to Sea of Sorrow, you're not going to be able to use that influence to get guild bonuses. You need to earn influence on that server from scratch.

It's on the left side of the map from the Yak's Bend stronghold, I know that. It's a cave full of rat things. There's a skill point there, so that should show up on the map.

  • You can make a giant armored cat that dual wields axes and spins...fucking hell I might have to give it a go. Are there face covering helmets? I love the size and the presence of the cat dudes but I hate the way the faces are modeled.
  • yes their are tons of face covering helmets

here is a lvl 43 necromancer charr

  • so if you get banned you can ask the guild wars 2 team why and they will tell you what exactly the reasoning for your banning is even the exact words you said to another player that got you banned

some pretty funny posting going on in there
  • Gah I don't know if I want this or not.
  • I'm The Joel.7563 .
  • So what has been the most interesting race and profession to play so far? I'm curious about those who choose Norn as their race also. Having the racial ability to transform into various animals sounds pretty fun.
  • I'm a Norn Guardian. I'm looking forward to being a huge, tanky bear that heals its allies.
  • That sounds cool. I think I might go with the Charr race though. They had such an impact on the first campaign. That I'm intrigued in playing their race. That and I like their beginning racial ability. It's a buff that increases you and your allies critical hit and bonus damage to conditions. Not so cool as shape shifting for sure though.
  • I'm playing an Asura engineer, which makes it rough to distinguish the job skills from the racial skills. They're both pretty steeped in technology. The flamethrower skill set is probably my favorite. Backing up and incinerating people that come after you is pretty satisfying.
  • I'm a Charr Engineer although the sylvari are my favorite as i just like being a mushroom head

Can't wait to get my elixir gun been doing skill point stuff for the past hour almost have the entire WvW map explored just need the Yak's Bend Zone

I really like the Yak's bend Server in WvW they are really organized and their is generally a leader and a few sub groups of people focused on objectives. Its nice to see a whole server working together although we shall see how well we do against the next 2 servers as we have pretty much destroyed these 2.

  • Hey everyone. I'm playing as a Sylvari Ranger. Feel free to add me (Janius.1564), though I'm in Pugilists Inc. with Dreg on Yak's Bend. Apparently our server is really awesome because we've been destroying people in WvW.
  • It's all because of that lake we took. Some of our enemies were trying to win over the aquatic natives by giving them pearls to become their friends. So we killed our enemies, took their pearls, and became better friends with the natives.
  • I learned my history lessons well. No pox blankets for the aquatic natives. Just pearls.
