Podcast: Patlaaaaboooooorrrrr.
  • We have a new podcast up at:

    http://www.destroyallpodcasts.com

It's about the original Patlabor OVA, one of the best things Oshii ever did! Yay! I'm happy.
  • I'm more of a TV series and second OVA kind of guy. I found the first OVA kind of boring.
  • Im trying to remember which OVA had what. One had the intro of the team and them fighting a monster in some episode, and the other was an episode of them in a bathhouse where Ohta is trying to take on the Golgo 13 guy and fighting the Griffin mech, and two girls in a drinking/trivia match.

Ok, I cheated and found that the Griffin in the OVA is "New Files." I am pretty sure I got the first OVA on DVD (granted, its the chinese DVD set that has terrrrrrrrible engrish subtitles). But yea ill listen to your episode later.
  • First OVA: Intro and the monster. Second OVA: Bathhouse and the drinking/trivia.
  • Ok, I figured as much. It has to have been like maybe 5 years since I saw the Patlabor OVA/some of the TV series because I was on a Patlabor high. I know I got the last movie they did which, I hardly remember anything about it, because there was hardly any Labors.
  • I adore Patlabor, and the limited editions of movies 1 and 2 sit in a place of honor on my shelf; 2 really deserves the kind of praise GITS routinely gets. I've started both the OVAs and TV show, but haven't finished either, I should get around to that soon.
  • Don't get confused, the second OVA series is the same thing as The New Files and it is really just the end of the TV series. That's the whole Griffon storyline.
  • Oh I haven't even gotten to The New Files yet, so yeah.
  • The Griffin Arc was the only thing I really wanted to see because for a few years I had some old HG models of Patlabor I got from a buddy of mine in HS and getting around to seeing that OVA I was like "Oh cool, so thats the Griffin then, this isnt a bad story arc" because I got the Griffin HG and wondered what this thing really did.
  • Man, the Griffin has a pretty sweet design, I've been eyeing the Revoltech recently.
  • It's a cool robot and it's also a pretty cool storyline.
  • I think you guys got the movies a little mixed up; the first one is the more light-hearted one that incorporates a lot of the getting stuck in traffic, the second is the more serious, GITS-esque one, though the plot details you got right. Just sayin' :T
  • You are totally wrong. 2nd is full of waiting in traffic. 1st one is the cool one with the genius hacker and the Babylon Project.
  • I don't equate static dialogue scenes in moving vehicles with being stuck in traffic, but I think I get where you're coming from now; and in 1I could've sworn they do get stuck in traffic due to the crowds in the part where they go after the construction labor. And as I said, you got the plot details right, I've just always though of 2 as being the more GITS-y one as it takes itself more seriously and is more Oshii-y than anything else he'd done to date; you can see a lot of the elements of his style that would be even more prevalent in GITS establish themselves there: aforementioned dialogue in moving vehicles, people talking without looking at each other, environmental montages set to music (and in this case an awesome speech), etc. Also Hoba wasn't a hacker, he was the designer of HOS and built the malfunction into the program itself. But whatever, I love them both.
  • No, Patlabor 2 literally has them stuck in traffic because of a terrorist threat and then they blow up a bridge with a missile from an aircraft.
  • Uhm why you think programmer != hacker?
  • Oh yeah, I forgot about Shinobu being stuck in traffic at the beginning. But that's like the only time it happens in 2! And I don't, but the movie never says he is one and it's irrelevant as there's no hacking on his part regardless. Although then again, I guess he'd have to be to get all his records so thoroughly erased, so actually yeah, I guess he is.
  • Right, exactly. :)
  • While I love all things Patlabor, Patlabor 2 is my absolute favorite. You guys should talk about that considering Andrew and Jeff were the only ones on the Patlabor 2 episode.

  • I thought Mike and Jeremy covered that movie already, or made mention of it?
  • No, we podcasted on the first movie. Andrew and Jeff did the second movie without me when I was having internet problems and I was super sad about it.
  • I am guessing you mean "that" Andy and Jeff from Anime Graruru. We get Jeff on like all time time, because he has nothing better to do other than be on skype all sad like till I invite him on the show (ok hes not really).

I was mostly absent on our second week of our BGC review, and when I was on there, it was me shouting angry things about my internet, I know that pain.
  • No, I mean Andrew as in VF5SS as in the guy who I did the podcast with exclusively for the first long chunk of the show. And by Jeff I mean Jeff "Rich Later" Tatarek of the annual podcast Lather's Blather.
  • Ah... I can see how I might have gotten those types of people confused.
  • Too many white kids on the Internet with the same first names!
  • I know rite!
  • Quick, rename yourself to something about space facists. Wait.
  • Too man white kids on the Internet with the same first names!

I'm not white.... I'm very Asian.

Andy may appear to be white, but he's what they consider black over there.

Andy is a man with lots of soul and who can keep it real all at once.

Hey now, they died for your space independence, but choose to do things just a "tad" radical is all.
