Drink of choice?
  • since I bury my nerd sorrow with alcohol I figured I would see what everyone here drinks to pass the time.

    Currently I am drinking:

    Jim Bean Black Double Aged

though my dad has some home made cinnamon whiskey and home brewed irish red ale that needs to kick my liver in the balls before long
  • How does Jim Beam's compare to other bourbons on the market? I've only tried their baseline, which was decent. Cinnamon whiskey sounds pretty dope.

    My favorites are:
    Bourbon:
    Old Forester (cheap and good)
    Four Roses Small Batch
    Eagle Rare
    Woodford Reserve
if cost were no object, I'd get Booker's and Blanton's, but I'm not in a position to spend $60 on a bottle of liquor for no reason.

    Whisk(e)y:
Powers Gold Label (cheap and good)
    Bushmills Black Label
Johnny Walker Black Label (in case you can't tell, I prefer blends to single barrel/single malt)

For martinis I like Tanqueray London Dry, and brandy/cognac I like Courvoisier more than Hennessey or Remy Martin. A good Armagnac or local eau de vie will be better than the popular mass produced brands, but it's hard to get ahold of that stuff here in VA.

As for beer, I'm a big baby that can't drink more than like 1 or 2 because it's too bitter for me.
  • Mixed: Manhattan, Old Fashioned, Gin Fizz, Champagne Cocktail.

Bourbon: Bulleit is my standard. Jefferson Reserve 18 Year is excellent. Pappy Van Winkle is incredible. I like most and love many.

Whiskey: I am inexperienced, and thus: Red Breast.

Beer: Most of the stuff from Great Divide, Founders, Bells, Southern Tier, and Great Lakes. Belgians if I am in the mood. Fucking love Flemish sour ale, but it is annoyingly expensive outside Europe.

  • What recipe do you use for Manhattans? I've been trying to get into rye (starting with Old Overholt) and figure mixing is the best way to start. My attempts haven't tasted good unless I add more sugar than I likely ought to be.

Also, we've had this discussion before, but I like Bulleit, but not at the price point for which it's sold around here =/ Still, this is probably the best time in history to be a bourbon drinker, so it's not like there's any lack of good brands.
  • I tend to drink most of my drinks straight.
For vodka I go grey goose.
I mainly prefer Bombay blue sapphire gin. As far as whiskey goes I haven't had much experience except what friends bring to the table. I really need to ask him what that whiskey was called.
  • Currently having a love affair with anything that includes vodka, so I've been mixing anything from White Russians to Vodka Cranberries lately.

When it comes to whisk(e)y, I'm more of a Scotch person. Ballantine's is good, but not too fancy.

I could go on about beer forever. Guinness is my absolute favourite, but I like anything McAuslan Brewery makes here in Montreal. Boréale is another good local brewery (and it's also really cheap). Moosehead and Alexander Keith's are also good Canadian brands.
  • I keep things simple, so I usually mix whiskey (Kentucky Gentleman since im cheap) with about anything that's carbonated, ginger ale, coke, 7UP, just whatever. I also like to mix Sake with Arizona Green Tea, but drinking Sake doesn't affect me too bad. Long Island Ice Tea's are pretty good, depending on where you get one.

As for Beer, so far what I like is Kirin and Shock Top Raspberry Wheat, it seems they are more easy for me to drink without the beer after taste, but I do like Bud Light as well. I do not like Guinness or Heineken very much.

My drinking usually happens when I am playing games on a Friday nights, which lately has been with Panzer Dragoon Saga.
  • Spanks: I'm real basic with that. Two parts bourbon to one part vermouth (sweet, dry, or a mix, whichever your palate prefers), dash of bitters, shake with ice, strain into a martini glass.

And yeah, it's a goddamn shame about the prices in your state. Should come to Ohio and stock up!

As bourbon goes, I forgot to mention George Dickel No. 12. That's good stuff, and it's reasonably priced.

  • Not that again! It is so awful. I bought a bottle so my friend Kat could have the glass skull. Even in bloody marys, it wasn't good.
  • Jon introduced me to many things for which I am thankful for. Mostly the Champagne Cocktail, Manhattan, and just straight whisky.

I would have to say my drink of choice would be a Cuba Libre. I went on Saturday with some friends to a bar (I now realize how boring they are to drink with and talk to) and had a Campari Orange, and because one of the girls didn't like their drink I drank her martini. Then we left after like an hour. AN HOUR. I didn't even get to order a second drink.
  • So did Aykroyd just completely give up on credibility or what?

As for staying on topic, I don't often drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos Equis Lager. When I don't want to remember what happened last night, I usually go with a bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label -- the whole bottle. I'm too lazy to deal with mix drinks, but I do love a good margarita, which is probably just a product of growing up in Arizona. I've also been known to lose count of how many screwdrivers I've downed when they're on tap.
  • Apparently Dan Akroyd has been that way for a while. He is reportedly the (non-ironic) source of inspiration for Ghostbusters.
  • He is very into the supernatural and that sort of stuff. Genuinely.

He's an entertaining guy, but sort of a nutbar.
  • well i think most comedy actors from the 80's have gone that route

Oh and if any one every goes to Alaska(i know that is random but i spent 6 years there in the 501st airborne) check out a place called the Moose's Tooth it has over 500 different beers and one in particular during the winter called the Darth Delirium and it was a wondrous alcoholic endeavor

    my favorite Beers:
anything from Dog Fish Head Ale, they have some restaurant/brewery places around the country there beer is just fantastic

I am not a mixed drink kinda guy though I know how to make one that's favorite of the ladies called Red Headed Slut; Jager, Peach Schnapps, and cranberry juice
  • If I'm just relaxing then I usually stick to craft beers. Mostly stouts and bocks, but I really like brown and red ale too. Not IPAs though as they're usually way too bitter. Have random pick 6s at the grocery store between New Glarus, Goose Island, Potosi, and Star Brewery stuff so the selection switches up pretty often.

Past that I always have a bottle of Jack Daniels (currently Tennessee Honey, smooth and delcious), a bottle of Kraken, and stuff to mix white/blond russians.

And if it's a Friday I'll just drop $10 at the bar and drink Windsor and coke until they run out of whiskey or time.
  • One of my "better" nights was $2 red headed slut night...

I don't have a refined taste so I drink most anything. Always experimenting because my exposure has been limited and cheap. That said, lately I've been drinking Kraken rum straight or finding things to make better with vodka. I blame Graz for that one. I lean towards tequila when drinking shots, do like drinking it straight with ice to. No brand preference.

Also got hooked on sazeracs. That's a tasty beverage.

Beer, I'm always trying different things, and rarely dislike any, but I usually default to corona in bars and yeungling at home.
  • I need to learn to make more drinks. I can't stand things that are overly bitter, I have a strong preference to things that are sweet or tangy. Any recommendations?
  • Yakov: first stop, whiskey smash.
  • Whiskey, lemon, and mint? I like the sound of this...
  • Sazerac is a sweetened whiskey cocktail. Been going to New Orleans themed restaurant in my neighborhood a lot, usually as an excuse to eat catfish and drink those.
  • I saw your Twitter post about that place, Ian. Are you still liking it?
  • That sounds great. Wish we had one of those around here.
  • Similarly: For folks who find themselves in Columbus: http://gallosfoodgroup.com/location_kb.html
  • Whiskey sour or amaretto sour.
  • Amaretto Sour and Grasshoppers for mixed drinks, and either Scooby Smacks or Neapolitan Shots.
  • Whiskey sour not an amaretto fan

I love cognac as well though it can be pricey it's a rare treat for me
  • I've never been big on liquor... I'll drink damn near anything made by Stone Brewery, though.
  • Spanks: I'm real basic with that. Two parts bourbon to one part vermouth (sweet, dry, or a mix, whichever your palate prefers), dash of bitters, shake with ice, strain into a martini glass.

I keep seeing shake on what I thought were stir drinks? http://cocktails.about.com/od/mixology/f/shake_or_stir.htm Also I have dry vermouth on hand due to martinis, but don't want to get sweet vermouth just for Manhattans.

I got a set of those for my birthday a few years back :D

Speaking of Whiskey Sours, Angel's Share had an amazing Japanese take on one with yuzu citrus for the sour and Yamazaki 12 year for the whisky, garnished with shiso. Japanese bartending is like the French haute cuisine of cocktails.
  • Rum & Lemonade. I was hopping for Rum & Limeade, but limeade but seems most places don't sell limeade anymore.
  • I totally went to a place today called mellow mushroom a what u like to call pizza pub that serves amazing beer like several hundred types of beer and some are high grav making this place awesome
  • Since reading "The Drops of God" I have started to drink wine whenever I have a chance. Suffice to say that since then I haven't look back :P
  • For a second I thought you said you've been drinking wine from a chalice, which would be 10x more amazing.
  • Speaking of wine, I was glad for the opportunity to further corrupt you, Yakov.
  • Thanks. I had a lot of fun yesterday.I was looking at the wine selection at my work today and was saddened that I couldn't buy any. Damn my family and their religious views!
  • Also that cupcake and icing recipe used to make a 2 layered cake. Ya or Too Much?

I can get one of those on my next trip to my homeland. Some blood might have to be shed but it would be worth it :P
  • I think the two-layer cake would be great. You could sandwich the icing as a type of filling and then top it with something else, too, if you think that you'd be overdoing it by using it as both filling and frosting.
  • I'll have to come up with something. Maybe a more creamy icing or filling for the middle and the cake covered in the Kahlua icing. I have a tradition of making my own birthday cakes, so this may be a good choice for this year.
  • I may have broken down and bought some wine today. I have no idea what is worth buying and what is shit, so I just bought a random bottle. Any recommendations on what to buy next time?
  • What kind did you get? I'll tell ya, I don't know jack about wine. I just drink it, and I usually abuse whoever's working at the store into giving me a recommendation. I should probably start writing things down! I'll see if I can drum up a list for you over the next week.
  • I don't know how easy it is to find Long Island wines where you live, but if you can find them, anything from Paumanok Vineyards is fantastic. Martha Clara Vineyards also have some very good wines, specifically the 2010 Riesling.
  • I bought a bottle of Gnarly Head Merlot. I'm about to sit down and try it while doing some math homework (I want to say I wouldn't recommend people try this, but I almost always down white Russians while doing mine, and somehow I've managed to get perfects on everything).
  • well, the entire bottle is almost gone. Not bad stuff, but I'll probably try something else next time. I got to be more careful around this stuff, I can still do my math, but walking around may be a different story....

Edit: Entire bottle gone. THANKS A LOT JON!
  • Awww, I've created a monster. It's so cute!
  • It's a good thing I'm the only one at my house right now.

My friend's brother is the head winemaker for dunham cellars. Apparently they make good shit a little expensive though. The one thing I learned from them is that if the wine advertises a green pepper flavor that means they made it wrong.

  • Drinking some Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio. I likey.
  • Going for a drink tasting menu at the Columbia Room. Seats are by reservation only, and the tasting menu is the opener, but I was thinking of trying the martini, since many reviewers have called it the best in America. It's at 5, though, so it may come down to how much can I drink on a Thursday?
  • Cicjtauls good but pretty dribk right now
  • Very nice. My case of keystone is not nearly as good, but it's getting me to a similar state.

P.S. Keith Stone is a damn liar
