Show #466: I Was Really Thirsty!
  • Nice Catherine talk. Toby has the worst friends ever. Or maybe Erica has the best friends ever. I haven't decided yet.

Kingdoms was written by R.A. Salatore? The guy who killed Chewbacca?
  • I don't berieve you about Madoka Magicka. I'm not convinced it's satire. More likely, that shit is played straight as fucked up otaku bait.
  • Haven't listened yet, but I did watch all of Madoka over the course of two nights. I had a great time watching it, and I'd recommend it heartily.
  • Where'd you watch Madoka? You don't have to tell me if it's all FILEZ, but I don't want to say it's bad without watching it.
  • Gotta comment on the quick talk about teachers working 9 months a year, since my girlfriend was a public school teacher for a couple years...

It's not like they get paid for those three months. Most find part-time gigs over the summer to pay bills. And they don't just work school hours; they often start early and take much of their work home. So it's common that they work 60+ hour weeks and their salary averages to about $9/hr. Factor in the compound stress of asshole children, their asshole parents, and bullshit school policies. Don't believe any of the glamorizing of teaching jobs, cuz it's a shitty, shitty gig.

Also, Madoka's awesome. I don't think it's satire (not comedy, at least), either, but it is a thoughtful perspective on the genre.
  • GG: My whole immediate family taught, as do/did many of my extended relatives. I concur with all you said.
  • Madoka is not satire. No way in hell. It's magical girl evangelion.
  • Because of cake talk, I decided to make chocolate super chunk muffins. Which is pretty much cake thinly disguised as breakfast food.
  • Also, pastie was not a typo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pastie
I'm sure you could also use them to cover your nipples if you tried hard enough.
  • Its not exactly satire in the sense that its not ironic or funny, but that doesnt mean the use of the word satire is totally inapt. It deconstructs the genre, I generally like stuff that does this, maybe because it gives you more to think about in terms of observing how stories are told and tropes develop and what that means and all that fun stuff. Which is why i like things like Watchmen or even Spaghetti Westerns. It may be too deconstructy for some people. And the evangelion comparison is totally unwarranted. It does not create some impenetrable symbol dense incomprehensible forest of meaning you have to fight your way through all the while wondering if anyone is actually at the meaning-making-helm. The story is actually pretty simple and yes - the ending is pretty immense in its scope, but it is not just a craaazy mind fuck. It takes characters that have been 'empowered' in other iterations of the genre (and in the beginning of this show) and it actually empowers them - completely. The show is fucking rad.
  • Sure. Both of them being anime it's just what came to mind.

    CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
  • Catherine was odd. I guess I went into thinking that you'd be able to make a lot of choices similar to western based RPGs and it was a bit disappointing that it was basically just like normal JRPGs storywise. If they would ever make a sequel, I would hope they would encorpate more real choices into it.

I think Toby has the worst friends. I both enjoyed and hated that how they kind of left bits of the story out and you had to actually investigate things to find out the whole story.

I'm on board with making a yellow cake with chocolate icing. We need to make a Super-Pac dedicated to that idea.

    I demand photographic evidence!

  • My wife can do the flowers for the cake, she is really good at that stuff
  • Hearing Madoka is an actual deconstruction rather than the "we don't know where we're going with this either" stuff Evangelion pulled is enough to convince me to give it a try.
  • Good show, downloading that Amalur demo right now. I couldn't get into Catherine either, I had some interest in the story but none in the block game.

Dave, you mentioned you briefly played a DMC-ish free-to-play MMO. Was it Rusty Hearts by chance? I ask because I actually lead the QA/Localization team for that game and it would be a funny coincidence since I listen to the show at work all the time.

(I posted basically the same message over in the comments for the show but saw there was more action over here. Feel free to delete either one if that's bad form on the interwebs.)
  • Rinne no Lagrange has the better Madoka

  • Well, I think madoka blue balled you the entire show. It took her 13 eps to finally become a f'king magical girl... WTF mate!
  • Now that is something. I assumed the main character = magical girl to be an integral element of the show. It'd be interesting to see how well it's handled.
  • Rinne no Lagrange has the better Madoka

Yeah, she is actually a capable heroine who is athletic, well adjusted and knows how to fight (so pro at kendo).

Rather then the weakling, emotionally broken, all of sudden most powerful magical girl EVAaaaaa. Meanwhile all her friends are dying left, right and centre waiting for her to make a f'king decision. Arrrrrrrrrgh.

Also keep entropy out of "magical" girl shows. Shinbo really needs to learn more than physics 101, before sprouting that garbage on me. Why couldn't he go the spiritual route with karma or something.

  • Rinne no Lagrange has the better Madoka

Itano Circus + girls in bathing suits = WIN

    ...+ they're like fourteen = FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
  • I still don't know how I feel about Catherine. I really liked the style and look of the game. The puzzling was clever but with a hell of a learning curve.

I think when people say Catherine is a game for adults they mean it's one of a few (I can't think of any others really off the top of my head, I'd be interested if anyone could bring some up that aren't artsy 15 minute indie PC titles) games that deals with mature subject matter that isn't blood guts and violence. It's a game that wants to be about relationships, marriage, infidelity, growing up and maturing ect ect. It falls pretty flat in that goal, having a bumpy ride in the start and then going completely off the rails by the end. Those themes aren't exactly integrated into the gameplay but I can't really think of how they would be. But I do think it deserves a lot of points for tackling those topics and I really hope in a couple years another game does the same thing, but a whole lot better.

Of course the last time I thought something along the lines of "that game was a really interesting idea, but executed poorly. I can't wait for it to be done better in the future!" I was thinking about Indigo Prophecy and we all know how well that turned out. I guess I won't be holding my breath.
  • I remember constantly finding myself wanting to grab the characters and scream: JUST FUCKING TALK TO EACH OTHER YOU MORONS!
So that aspect of how they tackled the subjects was pretty frustrating, but I think that actually might be a cultural thing. There doesnt seem to be a popular feeling that talking to each other about your emotions is a necessary part of a healthy relationship.

It actually WAS Rusty Hearts. That's funny, small world and all. I was hoping to go back to it with Graz and record a video, if there's ever a time when we have two working computers in this house again.

I was completely chuffed that the game had alternate costumes for its characters, but when I looked they all seemed like palatte swaps and that made me sad. :(

  • I would just play Rusty Hearts, not even for a video, if there were an interest to group up.
  • I don't know if I'd play it long term, but this inspired me to turn the game on again. I only played it for a couple hours the time I played. It seemed like a not-terrible DMC. I'd have to try it more to see if it's worth committing more effort to.
  • I'd feel less hamstrung about playing it if I had more moves. I think I would be more motivated to play if I wasn't by myself.
  • Asura's Wrath seems like a pretty natural progression from their Ultimate Ninja Storm Naruto games, which do boss fights with the same alternating action/fighting sequences with crazy awesome quick time events. You even do the exact same Panzer Dragoon-style sequence with Gaara. If anything those games have too much running around / fighting generic mooks padding out the game time in between the cool cinematic sequences.

I think that in order to save themselves some work, the designers had to create some overlap between the two story paths in the game. Which means that a lot of major events had to play out in a similar fashion, regardless of who you're pursuing. Sadly, this easiest way to do this is to hold off any major revelations or meaningful decisions until the final stages. Vincent has to be too chickenshit to talk to his girlfriend, because that's the only reason he would try to keep Catherine quiet, and thus, the only reason he wouldn't just tell her to eff off. To keep a character like Catherine in the story at all, you'd need a gutless protagonist who is too afraid to cut all ties with her completely after realizing he made a huge mistake. At least, if you're following the "good" path.

I just grabbed it on Steam. I might be on tonight if anyone is interested in seeing how coop works out.
  • I downloaded it to.
  • I think my lack of ability to enjoy Madoka Magicka is confirmation that most modern anime just doesn't do it for me. I can see the quality of Madoka objectively, but nothing therein appeals to me. As far as darker magical-girl shows go, I was much more invested in Utena and Princess Tutu.

I was also forced to watch it, so that didn't help.

    Same. Will be online tonight.
  • If anyone has any questions about Rusty Hearts feel free to message AbominaBill on steam. I'm usually logged in all day 10am-7pm pacific and can chat as long as things aren't too busy in the office.

One warning, the game definitely starts off slow and easy but if you stick with it I can promise Alchemy Lab and Ghost Prison levels, as well as more challenging enemies later on.
  • Shoot, now I actually wanna play more. :/ Time to get that other computer fixed.
  • Is the character you can buy worth it? I realize you're biased but as someone who presumably gets access you'd at least know more right?

Sounding like we can get an FK guild going.
  • I'm down. I played through the prologue and had a good time. Time to get a pad for the PC.
  • who are you playing as? I'm digging the guy with the sword.
  • I'll give this Rusty Hearts thing a try. I wouldn't mind playing as a sexy, underage vampire chick getting the band back together.
  • I was playing the dude with the sword, but that guy with the gauntlet seemed pretty dope.
  • I've still only played with the gunslinger chick, she seemed pretty cool. I should probably check out the others in case I regret my commitment.
  • I guess I'm jumping on the wagon too (peer pressure). I recently got Steam so I don't have anybody in my friend's list yet, anybody who wants to add me is the same name as here.
  • I think people have moved on, but just to put some minds to ease, I believe it's pronounce pah-s-tee not paste-ee. But don't that that get in the way of your hotpocket nipple fantasies!
  • I am gonna try to download Rusty Hearts as well. Unfortunately it probably wont finish till tomorrow. :(

There is a fastkarate steam group.
  • Is the character you can buy worth it?.

I'll let you know, cause i got her for free:)
  • Is the Prologue chapter supposed to just end abruptly before you fight that giant monster? I can't tell if I'm doing it right.
  • That dream didn't seem realistic, because Daryl Surat's in Florida, and Philidelphia can't be worse than Florida, can it?

Did anyone run into any bugs in the Kingdoms of Amalour demo? I haven't played it yet.
  • Nothing is worse than Florida.
