Star Trek Online Thread: Set phasers to pew pew
  • We somehow didn't have a thread for this, so I figure this will be the coordination thread. STO is Free-to-Play in case anyone was thinking of checking it out. Personally, I'm keeping my Gold subscription for at least a few months, mostly so I can finally finish up the Foundry mission I was writing. In case you're thinking about playing, the download page is here

    Getting started:

    Spoiler:
We don't have a FastKarate fleet yet, and I'm generally of the opinion that small fleets aren't a great idea, having been in two so far. So the best thing IMO is to coordinate with other people online via a global chat channel. To do this, right click on one of your chat tabs, and in the screen that comes up, you should be able to add a new channel, add "FastKarate" and make sure it's checked, and you should be able to hear us if we're on. From there, you should be able to right-click anyone's name, and "Add Friend." The Social window should have a tab where you can see which of your friends are on.

OMG Skill Trees Wat Powers Are Gud

    Spoiler:
Seriously, the skill tree has been redone so many times I don't even know anymore. At its core, your Captain's class is sort of like your build/powers, and your Ship Class is your role.

    Tactical Captain/Escort - DPS
    Science Captain/Science Vessel - Shield healing/AoE Buff/Debuff/Status
    Eng Captain/Cruiser - Hull healing/Tank

You can't change your Captain's class once it's set, but you can respec or choose a different ship to play a pure vs. hybrid role. The different ship types within class will also assist with this i.e. Assault Cruiser (DPS tank) vs. Exploration Cruiser (HP tank).

At the core of combat, shields (Front/Back/Left/Right) get taken out with energy weapons like phasers. They protect really well against projectile weapons like photon torpedoes and mines. Once they're down, the torps and mines do a ton of damage. They're 4-directional, so often balancing or reinforcing shields will make a big difference (like putting all your shield power to the front for a strafing run). Science Vessels are best at keeping shields up, and Cruisers are best at taking hull damage and healing it. The Escort's main job is to punch a hole in a shield segment, then shove as many torpedoes as possible through it to kill.

Weapon types have been streamlined quite a bit, not sure what else still applies?

    Recommended Foundry Missions:
Rema Donna by Havraha - Great mission except for the main villainess, who I think was intended to be unhinged crazy, and came off a little too Cobra Commander bumbling. The other villains were great, though. Otherwise, solid mission, good writing, cool jailbreak scene.

Project Echo by rfrance74 - Respond to SOS type mission. Was pretty good, had good writing and story other than excessive use of words like “Echo.”

Evangeline - A new prototype ship goes missing on her shakedown cruise in the Zenas Expanse. Neat mission where a ship is trapped, and you have to help them with various issues to get them out.
  • So I'm Lt. level 6 or something, when do I get access to better ships? Also what currency is used to buy ships and how would I accumulate it.
  • So every rank up you get a new ship, so 10, 20, 30, etc. Every time you rank up, you should get a free token to buy a new ship. You only need to pay Energy Credits for ships if you want more than one of your rank.

For example, when I got to Captain, I used my token to get a free Galaxy-class cruiser so I could tank. But I was also curious about the escort class and doing DPS, so I got some Energy Credits together and bought a Defiant-class.
  • Ok, so I picked engineer and haven't spent any points whatsoever. Are engineers the tanks? If so, what should I put points into? Its not like this is my first mmo, but for some reason STO's system has gotten me very confused.
  • I downloaded it, too, and I'm so lost. Space combat is fun. Can I just do a lot of space combat? Better question: can I run XP in a virtual machine and play the old TNG game from the mid 90s?
  • What you should get is Starfleet Command 2. It's almost exactly the same space combat but better because it has George Takei.
  • I'll note that a few months ago, at least, the buzz was that once F2P hit, you would need to pay Dilithium (aka the currency you get from certain dailies, think "emblems" from WoW) to get new ships (and that above a certain tier you would stop getting the free level-up ship.) I haven't checked to see if that's the case yet, though.

Skillwise, if you hover over the skills it should be at least reasonably clear what they all buff. Since you can get respecs at higher levels, probably best to put points into whatever seems useful right now? I didn't really put anything into the Battery skill, since I rarely use the consumable batteries.

It can be a little confusing, but the Captain type's main function is the abilities you get at the top end of the skill tree. Now, your Bridge Officers (Boffs) represent the powers/abilities you'll have in your tray. They're basically collectible like equipment anyway, so you might say, "What difference does that make, then? Can't I just recruit a Boff with whatever powers I need regardless of my Captain's class?" Well, yes, but the advantage is that you get to automatically train any BOff with your top of the skill tree ability. So if you're an engineering Captain, your Engineering Officer will always have access to whatever awesome skills you know.

But like I said, the ship type determines your role: Cruisers are tanks. Escorts are glass cannons. Even if you have the best Engineering abilities for taking damage and tanking, an Escort will still have a tiny amount of HP, and a high damage output, plus not many slots for Engy type gear.

I personally play a Tactical Captain in a Cruiser, so I'm like a Tank specced for DPS. I have a lot of capacity for taking punishment because my ship is huge, and I use my Captain's abilities for augmenting my damage output. If I were an Engineering Captain in a Cruiser, I'd be a Tank specced purely for tanking, so I'd be even better at taking damage.

Mostly, there's nothing you have to stick with other than Captain type, so mix and match until you find something you like.
  • I'll be hopping on today if anyone want to do some lower lv stuff. let me know.
  • My Science/Escort Captain is Tac@Salynt. I'll probably be on in a few hours.
  • I'll be on tonight as well, my new fleet has a thing at 8:30 or so though. Besides that, I'll be around.
  • I am trying to play this game and I have reset the password 50 times on my existing account, only to still be denied entry.
  • Have you tried shouting "Computer, override!" yet?

Have you selected properly between Perfect World vs. Cryptic login?
  • I got it.

    But it wasn't easy.
  • I had the same problem with the logins as well. I ended up resetting it twice, and then it worked. Maybe it just needed time to take effect?

I hit level 10 and got a badass cruiser, game is pretty awesome.
  • At first I thought the Borg adapting to my weapons was annoying for gameplay, but then I remembered I had a jump kick ability. Needless to say, I don't use weapons anymore.
  • Hooray for brute force! I think it was often overlooked how much Data and Worf wooped some Borg ass once the Borg adapted to their phasers. I'm thinking Worf took out as many with his batleth as he did with phaser fire.
  • I never understood why they didn't just start using projectile weapons against Borg, it worked on the holodeck. Worf used a mek'leth when he fought the Borg.
  • You would think they had railgun tech by now. It would also be super effective against deflectors/shields.
  • Since I told Spankminister I'd do this, here it is - a list of Foundry missions I've played and would recommend. It's short-ish now, but I'll keep looking and posting more as I find them, and I encourage others to do the same.

(For those who don't know yet, Foundry = user-created. You can get to these missions by going to the Available tab on the missions screen and selecting Community-Authored on the left.)

Spirits of Ramok Nor by alimac30 - Cardassian/Bajoran-focused mission, involving an old Cardassian torture facility that is apparently haunted. The mission description proudly proclaims that this is "not a Devidian mission," probably since that territory has been well-tread by some of the official missions.

Audacious Aground by AgentYae - Ran this with Spankminister and Getter. In the running for my favorite Foundry mission yet. Ends with some unresolved plot threads and the promise of a sequel, although I don't know if that's ever going to come out (it's been close to a year now.)

Chronotons and Klingons by CaptPFDennis- Fun mission with some good old-fashioned time travel.

The Infinitesimal Frontier by dixonium - Two words: Fantastic Voyage.

Left To Die by Tiuz - Another one I did with Spankminister/Getter. If the title isn't enough of a giveaway as to the theme of this one, the fact that you're looking for the U.S.S. Romero should be.

Dereliction Duty by Nagorak - Excellent mission with a downright surprising amount of detail - optional conversations to listen in on, branching conversations, and investigation that actually involves sifting through the data rather than just having your bridge officer sum it up for you. The middle part is a little slow, but the end is good. This one ends on a more abrupt cliffhanger than Audacious Aground, but on the plus side, the sequel actually should be coming out pretty soon.

The Celes Snare by RichardJ - I can't actually remember anything about this one, including whether or not I've played it, but I have it jotted down as a good one. Probably not terrible, at least!
  • So what level is everyone? I'm currently a 21 Engineering Commander.
  • Hey Nth, is it cool if I put your (and everyone's) mission reviews in the top post in a spoiler tag so we can have that quick reference at the top rather than crawling through the thread for Foundry stuff to play? Also, where possible, let's mention the author names as well, since some of them are worth following.

Venture, I have a character at the level cap, but I'm perfectly happy to scale down and help people level up. I have a Science character I sometimes use that's at like 15 or something, too.

I thought that's the whole reason they have energy weapons in the first place: high speed projectile weapons don't work anymore. The deflector dish is for moving shit in subspace out of your way at warp speed, no reason you couldn't just do that to a railgun bullet traveling at near light speed.

As for the Picard Tommygun vs. Borg scene, I'd assume that they'd eventually adapt? Worf builds a personal shield to block bullets out of a communicator in one episode, so I figure the Borg would adapt. It's definitely true that the Borg haven't yet adapted to super strength melee and SWEEP THE LEG. Maybe then they'll grow treads instead of feet?
  • How about we just have Worf shoot one-liners at the Borg? It worked on the deflector dish.

  • On the deflector dish, you couldn't make that shot.

No one could make that shot
  • Spankminister: Sure, go for it. I'll edit my post to add authors for all the ones I can find (if I'm missing any, it's because I don't have access to a STO-capable computer at the moment.)
  • By the way, if you want to unlock the new Odyssey-class cruiser (aka what will be the Enterprise-F), you'll want to log on sometime between February 2nd and 6th. Same goes for the Klingon flagship. http://startrekonline.com/node/2838
  • I'm going to have to level up my Klingon.
  • I'm going to have to make a Klingon.

Edit: It appears Klingons get to start at level 20. That helps some.
  • So I got through this character creation deal that only kind of worked. Then it said 'you no make character', logged me out and I got nothing.

Also, what's the deal with MMOs not allowing you to change the display settings before character creation? I chose the new Star Trek film uniform 'cause the others looked too low-res.
  • Star Trek Online should default to max detail settings in character creation, unless you've disabled it specifically in the Video Settings to avoid that very problem. Of course, it won't change your resolution up if that's the problem.
  • Would anyone want to try to run The 2800 later today? Post to this thread with your availability and time zone. I'm probably around after 3 or 4 EST
  • I think that might be a little too late for me although we shall see. The 2800 is pretty good stuff.
  • Yeah, it's looking like today might be no good. It's definitely worth us setting up a time during the week or something though.
  • It's spring break, so I'm good any time for the next week.
  • I've been grinding some Starbase 24 everytime I complete a Romulan story mission just so I can get to the next one. I have to say that because the space combat is so much fun that it doesn't really feel like a grind.

I'm really thinking about putting some money into the game to get some more inventory slots, bank slots...or the Defiant bridge set. I cannot find a reasonable answer on what the exchange rate from Cpoints to dollars is so does anyone know?
  • Being a little bit slow on learning Star Trek Online, I just found out about scheduled events and play a bunch of the Mirror Universe event. I only played about 2 or 3 of them but it had to have bumped my level by at least 2 ranks.

  • I'm really thinking about putting some money into the game to get some more inventory slots, bank slots...or the Defiant bridge set. I cannot find a reasonable answer on what the exchange rate from Cpoints to dollars is so does anyone know?

I thought it was like $6.25 for 500 C Points or something. I've bought some ship slots, assorted costumes, costume slots (MMOs=elaborate doll dress up simulator), and I just canceled my monthly subscription, so I'm thinking about buying that D'Kyr science ship and going Tac/Sci with the money. The only thing I actually wanted my Gold status for was the ability to make Foundry missions, but I haven't made the time in the past 6 months.
  • I was doing some Klingon quests a little while back and came across this one. There's a tribble infestation on some planet and you need to kill all of them. It would seem that tribbles are the Ford Pintos of the animal world, blowing up when hit, or in this case jump kicked. This is my story.

  • that game looks so damn lame
  • The ground combat is.
  • Now that my computer is working again I've re-installed this. Anyone still playing.
  • If you send me a Steam message when I'm on then I'll probably get on if I'm not about to go somewhere.
