Kiss your Bandai goodbye
  • http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-01-02/bandai-entertainment-to-stop-releasing-new-dvds-bds-manga

I hope this does not mean they will never release the second half of the Mobile Suit Gundam Complete Collection! That would make me super sad! But it DEFINITELY means no Turn A Gundam, so hold onto your fansubs.
  • What? WHAT? Godammit, that means I better see about snapping up the individual Gode Geass R2 collections (don't judge me). When exactly is their cut-off date, for lack of a better phrase?
  • What, you mean overpriced products don't sell? Weird.
  • Nick, you're thinking of Bandai Visual. They're still around. Bandai Entertainment was the American branch that released Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, various Gundam series, etc.
  • ^Ah, good, I was just thinking that Bandai Ent.'s prices were never that unreasonable. And they did indeed release some of my all-time favorite anime, so they will be missed. I can only hope for a massive license save by Funimation and the rest; I'm betting they'd love to get their hands on Bebop, Gundam, and the rest.
  • I'd figure a Turn A Gundam release was too good to be true.
  • Oh. Well that was embarrassing.
  • It's k, Unicorn is safe for now.
  • Damnit, I was going to buy Turn A, and I barely ever buy anything.
  • I really, really hope they stick to their February solicitations.
  • They will be, apparently. And hey, maybe Turn A will get licensed through someone else?
  • That's too bad. Whatever happened to their Honneamise line? I assume it got cancelled a while ago? I bought the first two Patlabor movies and the Wings of Honeamisse releases from them. Even though they were overpriced the care and great extras they put into those made it worth it to me.
  • Ditto on the Patlabor limited editions. Their Geass special editions had the best extras I've ever seen in an anime North American release: soundtracks, sound episode CDs, booklet thingies, character sketchbooks by CLAMP, etc. Bandai's always had the best brownies in their releases, I've noticed (along with Nozomi).
  • What happened to them is that was a different department of Bandai, called Bandai Visual USA. Not surprisingly, the US market will not support $80 or $90 releases of one movie, so they were a huge failure and Bandai closed that branch. For the record, I bought both because I love Patlabor, but I bought them on Amazon used for like $15. That I will pay.
  • Heh. I remember when Bandai started selling its own anime in the US. Everyone was all "yay, finally we get official Gundam stuff! And since they own the property they don't need to pay licensing fees, so we won't have to pay $35 for a two-episode subtitled VHS tape!"

...aaaaand then they start putting out $35 two-episode subtitled VHS tapes, and everyone is all "um wtf", and some Bandai rep said "well that's the market price for anime..."
  • Yeah, the market price if you are stupid and want to make no money and lose.
  • This must have been back in the 90's before the 00's were full of market priced 35 dollar Gundam DVD's... and the freaking 200 dollar Zeta Gundam boxsets with some posters and I think what, "pencil sharpeners" were added?
  • Well, considering it was VHS tapes, yes, yes it was.
