2012 Conventions
  • I've decided that next year I will actually go to a con for the first time.

Which is the one that most people from the forum seem to go to?
  • Otakon. Hands down I think.
  • Are you west coast or east coast?
  • PAX is supposed to be the best bet for maximum fun.
  • Wish I could make it to Otakon. I'm stuck in the midwest so it's usually a yearly trip to ACen for me.

    East Coast.
  • What are you interested in doing at cons? (other than meeting forum members)
  • Yeah. I went to Otakon out of curiosity the first time because I tagged along with friends. Now I only go because of friends. There is absolutely nothing I would do there. I would kill myself if I went on my own.
  • I would highly recommend going to either of the PAX conventions, only problem is going to other cons afterwards may leave you disappointed.
  • I think we need a Fast Karate convention. And by Fast Karate convention, I mean a day where everyone shows up at Joel's house with food, we watch wicked city, and we play various fighting games.
  • I'm down with that. :)
  • ...unnanounced. Basically you would always have to expect a Fast Karatekon, Joel.
  • The price of admission will be a pack of oreo's per a person.
  • It's only a sleeve for the one day pass.
  • Count me in. I'll make some deep fried Oreos.
  • My brother lives in Baltimore now so I will definitely have to check out Otakon this year. Do you have to buy admission way in advance like comicon or can you just show up with a Cloud Stryfe sized blade?
  • You get a discount when ordering in advance. It's like $10 I think, dunno I always end up buying my pass when walking into the convention center...

    Isn't that Extraneous Thanksgiving?

To be honest I don't know what to expect, but since I might have couple of extra vacation days I have to schedule in advance my time which is the other reason I was asking, since I've heard people mention that geting a hotel is a pain as the date gets closer.

  • I got a room the morning before I drove down last year. Getting a cheap hotel closer to the date is definitely a thing though.
  • I'm maybe not down with watching Wicked City while eating footlong hot dogs.
  • Is it better or worse than watching Doomed Megalopolis?
  • Umm...I'm voting worse. At least Doomed Megalopolis has a giant magic flying sting ray.

@Squirrel Was it an uber expensive room?
  • It wasn't cheap. You can cancel hotel rooms within like 48 hours at no penalty. If there's any chance you're going you should make a reservation.
  • So far apparently it's between PAX or Otakon?

I always thought PAX was an E3 like thing not a con but anyhoo, I looked up the dates for both and Otakon seems to be going on at a better time.
  • I don't exactly remember the price but it was probably per night what I would have paid for the whole weekend had I shopped around earlier.

Before the guilt brigade tries to chime in:

    SHUT THE FUCK UP!

But yeah I definitely would not recommend waiting till the last minute but you could if you had to.
  • :D Fuck you.

I'm over it, now its your turn to be guilty because its not like its my fault that my making a JOKE about how small our room was made you immediately buy a room in a completely different hotel for like a billion dollars a night. Jerkface.
  • That wouldn't be guilt. That would be regret. No, I still don't regret having a room slightly larger than yours all to myself. Maybe being in a hotel 3 blocks away when kind of drunk and not wanting to watch creepy, bad anime in a smaller more crowded room sucked but that's different though. When "I" stumbled drunk through "my" door I didn't wake up 2 people twice. Just the once. =P

If you're looking for gaming of any kind, PAX is really the best bet. They've got pretty much every kind of gaming there is.
  • For Otakon, anybody ever consider the hostel? The one year I was actively making plans to go, thats where I was going to stay. I did read somewhere that it does get full of (forgive me) "weeaboos" come con time, but I might be able to live with it for dirt cheap prices.
  • Hell no. I get pissed off walking in the convention center. I'd probably end up dead from picking a fight with too many kids.
  • As someone who normally leaps at the opportunity to sleep in a hostel instead of a hotel room, even I shudder to think about doing so in close proximity to a con.
  • PAX would be fun. As would eating Oreos.
  • That's a dangerous proposition. You need those oreos for admission.
  • Gotta eat just the right amount.
  • Anyone going to Gencon Indy 2012? I just booked my room today.
  • I'm going to Genericon. Mostly because it's only a couple of blocks away.
  • I'll probably be going to Ohayocon, really just to meet up with some friends of mine I haven't seen since highschool.
  • I'm doing Ohayocon, too, mostly to support Jeff Tatarek's event(s).
  • Otakon, holla.
Dave and/or Joel, heading to Zenakaikon? It's in Philly...
  • If several folks are doing Ohayocon, we should hook up. I'm the (self-styled) ambassador of this town, after all.
  • I'm only planning on being there for Saturday, but ya, I would be down for something.
  • just thinking, any interest in New York Comicon/Anime Fest? Its convenient for you New York/tri-state area people and its in "midtown Manhattan" so I assume its not a shitty place like Baltimore.
  • Except it's a shitty con.
  • I really just need a reason to hang out with you people for more than a day so we can do cool stuff.

edit: ...preferably that isn't in the middle of summer because I don't like the heat.
  • I really just need a reason to hang out with you people for more than a day so we can do cool stuff

  • Ohayocon is this weekend. I will probably be there Friday and Saturday. Any Idea when the Jeff Tatarek event will be? hanabi t-shirts anyone?
  • Jeff is co-hosting Anime Hell and hosting Anime's Craziest Deaths. Looking at late Friday and late Saturday. Unsure when his sumo event is happening.
  • I should be able to make the saturday event. I work 6am saturday morning so I doubt I can stay late enough friday for it.
  • Sounds good. I plan to be there for both late-night events. Drop me a text on Saturday, Yakov. We can get a bite to eat before wandering over to the convention center.
  • It is only a 5 hour drive for me. The earliest I would be able to show up would be like 5:30pm on saturday tho.
