  • Made by the people who made Demon's Souls. I haven't played Demon's Souls so I can't really compare the two, but I like this game so far. I apparently went the wrong area right after the tutorial and got one shotted by a dragon.
  • Nah... You went the right way
  • Sadly true. I'm in the process of peppering the damn thing with arrows. Does not seem as effective as it was in Demon's Souls
  • I'm still debating if I would actually get enjoyment out of the punishment and challenge this game has to offer, or if I just like to think I'm the person that would.
  • Starting the game is the hardest part, there's definitely a plateau where things become manageable.
  • So. How about that Taurus Demon.
  • It was pretty easy.
  • You shut your mouth.
  • Wait till you see the Ares Knight.
  • You can kill the Taurus Demon by climbing up the ladder by the entrance and using your plunge attack. I killed him in three hits.
  • Huh, guess that would work. He actually was pretty easy without that, just used the lightning enchant thing and went to town on him. Did die once though cause I didn't notice the archers till I got hit in the back while fighting him...
  • Has anyone tried to coordinate co-op? I know the server setup is completely fucked this time around. I'd like to hear first hand from someone how hard it was to play with a friend.
  • I'm just going to assume you don't know all the details so I can tell you everything up front. The person who's alive has to place a soul sign (which I think is called a soapstone) and the person who wants to get in has to be dead, I forget what item you need to join a game but you'll know what it is when you see it. The process should take like 8-15 minutes or so, the player trying to get in is basically randoming into other people's games until they land in yours. If Dark Souls works the same way it only lasts for one area, whoever joined will be blocked from progressing by a barrier.
  • I know how it works. I want to know how much of a pain in the ass it is from someone who's actually tried it. Some people are saying it takes them hours to get into someone else's game.

I know that to play this as a co-op game we'd pretty much have to do each area twice. Basically my questions are: how long/how much work does the initial connection take and, after being dumped out after killing a boss, do you remain in the same peer group so the next summon will be quick and painless?
  • If a boss has a tail, cut it off. you may get a weapon for it.
  • I've got 3 that way. Need to start pumping strength so I can swing them slowly at things. I'm currently lost, any idea where to go after killing the gaping dragon?

Dave, as far as I can tell the server not only takes forever to find someone, but drops the connection several times before it goes through, and after the boss you are split until one of you dies and then starts the process all over again.
  • Trying a lot of different things. Mostly restarting the game and repeatedly dropping summoning sign. No luck. :/
  • Did anyone try to take out the black knight before the Ifrit Demon? Is it worth it?
  • I just bought that crest that unlocks the area in the forest. You can farm a shit crazy amount of souls there in no time. Like 10k in less 3 minutes.
  • I'll have to start on that, and Joel do you mean the one in the undead burg? He's guarding a ring that increases defense so that's worth snagging, but as for killing him I can't remember exactly but I think he was worth either 500 or 1000 souls and drops a greatsword
  • Yeah, the one in Undead Burg, not the one at the top of the tower in Undead Parish. Is there a trick to killing those guys?
  • The first two I used the drake sword and block, move behind and hit it. should only need 5 or 6 hits. The third one I fought I used the Black Night Great sword and killed it in 2 hits.
  • My strategy for killing black knights has been to hurl fireballs at them and cry.
  • Good strategy.
  • I picked Knight, so I have to farm firebombs to make fire.
  • Just strafe and block, when he goes for the shield bash then lunge you can stab him in the back. The Parish one went down the same way, just block till he does a wide swing then stabby stab.
  • The first knight I backtracked all the way to that ladder where the two firebomb throwers were and threw firebombs until he died. The second one I had the drake sword and actually managed to parry and kill him. Got the black knight greatsword with it. Feels good man.
  • Ive gotten to the point that I can progress through the area with the ghosts at the start and I have almost never used anything but my fireballz or a sword for killing weak enemies.
Loving that they don't need int to be strong so I can just pump all my points into endurance. I wear the armor of that big guy under the taurus demon's tower now and wield a sword that bursts into flame when swung.

This game is so much more fun than Demon's was! I also love the little shout outs (or what I assume are shout outs) to the original game such as the Hellkite Dragon bridge camping like the Red dragon used to.

What Covenant did everyone join? I am a Chaos Servent for the Pyromancy spells. Probably gonna turn to DarkWraith once I beat the next area though for the cool weapon.
  • Knights appear to be part of the Way of White by default. I haven't gotten the option to join any of the others yet.

What's the deal with critting people? I seem to have a lot of trouble making that work.

Edit: I found this wiki. It doesn't seem authoritative but it's got plenty of info: http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com
  • You mean backstabbing? The sweet spot is really small. I don't remember it being that bad in Demon's Souls. Mostly I just try to riposte, but with guys like black knights I'm too cowardly to try it.
  • So, killing the boar is mad easy. Let him charge you from the top of the stairs and then get him to attack you near the second bonfire to the left of the boar's starting position. He'll stand on it and die.
  • I killed the undead dragon by standing in one spot and shooting him with arrows till he died. this also worked on a few mini-bosses and I hear it works on the hydra.
  • Crossbow + heavy bolts is the business. Killing everything like that is boring, though, and reduces the game to nothing but grinding for bolts.
  • I hate the four kings so so much, I tried it with phantom help but every time they don't wear the abyss ring and just fall to their death. :/ Also I can't be a Darkwraith or it will nullify all the time i spent killing rats to grind humanity to feed to the chaos servant leader to unlock some secret passage in an area that can only be accessed after the darkwraith window has passed.
  • Died a bunch of times with Havel the Rock. Finally managed to backstab him a bunch of times until he died. It's those small moments I live for.
  • I finally ordered a copy off of Amazon, but I guess they were sold out since it's not schedule to ship until the start of November. I'm worried the internet will have solved and wiki'd the game out by then. I have taken to reading this thread while I wait, and I must say without having playing Demon Souls things like this just make no sense to me:

But it makes me really look forward to getting to play.
  • Blank, I got a CE I'd be willing to part with. Some guy on twitter was gonna buy it offa me, but I haven't heard anything from him in awhile. If he doesn't make contact soon yous can buy it off me.
  • Thanks for the offer but I'm using a bit of store credit for it. I'll wait it out.

Edit: And checking again today it might come in about the middle of next week. It's like I'm without prime all over again.
  • dem covenants man, they confuse the heck out of me. I am a Chaos Servant+2 which looks totally weird on the stat screen if you ask me.
My adventure with Havel was much more Fireball centric, as are most of my fights.
I can kill the guys in New Lando with the weird black hole shields in one hit with a fire orb now. I spent so many many souls on upgrading my pyro flame I still haven't hit level 40 after hours and hours of soul grinding/general meandering.
Also PROTIP: There is a ring in sens fortress that triples item drop rate. and it is glorious.
  • I just got to the night with the mace before the fire keeper soul in the Undead Burg. Do was baby mode compared with the actual knight at the top of the tower near by. That guy one shots me with his overhand even when I'm guarding.
  • That's because the tower knight was optional and everything optional thing is way way harder.
Today I got trapped in a painting, crazy days.

    EDIT
I DID IT! Take that stupid ghostland! =D
  • Survived my first invasion. Feeling awesome.
  • Was it the bloody "spirit of vengeance"? Stupid Darkmooners, I only have 1 point of sin and they stalk me like no one's business.
  • I just started running around in the darkwood. Those stone knights are annoying.
  • TIp: don't move your save to a memory card. It will no longer work, ever.

On the plus side, I know dis shit so well now it only took me like two hours to get back to where I was. :/
  • So, killed DAT Gaping Dragon and got his 25k souls.

Ran back to the firelight shrine and fell off the aqueduct right outside it, to my death, while holding 35k souls.

Respawn back in the Depths, hold my breath ALL THE WAY BACK, especially when fighting the plague dog who has suddenly learned to dodge even though they never did before.

Souls intact, now have pyromancy flame +5. 250 damage fireballs, on nom nom.
  • What do I do after killing the Bell Gargoyles? Should I kill the Capra demon or the butterfly thing?
  • Butterfly kind of hits a dead end that sends you back to Undead Burg, so it's quick. Capra demon sends you into the sewers, which is a much longer detour.

Also after Gaping Dragon, Butterfly went out like a punk in the face of my 30+ charges of various fire spells. Makes sense, it only gave 1/8th the souls.
  • I don't have an answer for the butterfly given my limited ranged options. I probably need to farm up some fire bombs and heavy bolts before I fight it.
  • If you dodge around for a couple minutes it'll land on the bridge, whack the shit out of it for like 5 seconds and then back out, before it takes flight again it does an aoe spell. Just keep on doing that, it takes about 4 or 5 times. Try to stay directly in front of it the entire time, the spells are easier to dodge when they're coming straight at you, as opposed to an angle.
