The Veef Show
  • I listen to you man. I remember looking at your backlog of episodes and for some reason most of those were missing. Were you able to get those back up? this was a few months ago when i saw this.
  • I was able to get all of them except 17. That one was probably shit anyways so whatevs.
  • sweet, ill have to check those out. I know you released 2 more but i havent had the time to listen to them but I will.
  • Are you going to have a feed for your podcast anytime soon?
  • This is a good podcast. Your comments on Gundam are pretty spot-on.

But Dougram is awesome, wtf. Its a Gundam series if Gundam was well-written and actually gave a shit about politics and world-building, rather than just pretending to..
  • i dunno mang, Deloyer seemed to be just like Earth to me

    even had the same trees

maybe i was too harsh in the review but I do think Dougram is pretty good

it just felt less special than something of its length. LoGH feels just about right but Dougram is kind of excessive.
  • So to you Zim, Gundam would be better if Tomino didnt give the world building a politics story and plot of something from a c rated movie? In gundam there is enough in the UC era to go on regarding factions, government and military to give a lot to go and build on. I havent seen Dougram yet, but I may check it out once i get past Layzner and Votoms.
  • Well, Gundam is hit and miss with its politics and plot in general. The original MSG does a great job of showing the internal politiking (or backstabbing) of the Zabi's, but by Zeta I always felt backstory and worldbuilding was being totally eschewed for the sake of robot fights. Nowhere is that more evident than with the Titans, who could have been shown as ideologically justified considering the previous actions of Zeon, but rarely come across as anything more than power-hungry Yakuza in cool uniforms. As someone who finds the most interesting part of Gundam the setting, that's always bothered me.

Personally I think Unicorn hits the exact right balance between action and plot. Episode two especially did a great job of really fleshing out Zeons motivation in an interesting and sensical way.

Dougram probably is a little stretched out, and yes, Deloyer is basically Algiers. But I think it has one of the most fleshed out, well realised settings in mecha. I've never seen another 80's mecha where both sides motivations were fleshed out to such a full extent. Its a lot more brash and obvious in its depiction of politics than LOGH, but as far as robot shows go I find it does a pretty great job.
  • Could be worse. It could be like Votoms where the Space Catholics ruined everything.
  • So that guy in Votoms actually WAS the pope?
  • no he was just a fat guy in a robe

In Votoms Shining Heresy they have actual space catholics
  • GAAAAAHHHHH you ruined it for me.

I wish i didnt click in here. Well, does it make up part of the story in someway with space Catholics, like as in are they really important? I just thought the whole premise was Rambo with a robot.
  • Dude you find out about the space Catholics like two minutes into the first episode of Shining Heresy. It's not a huge surprise. They're pretty central to the plot of the OVA.
  • Rambo with a robot is the Votoms spinoff, Mellowlink. And it's more like Mellowlink kills robots.
  • Chirico is basically Rambo with less emotion
  • I guess it's time to watch Squid Girl as opposed to Redline nao.
  • Mellowlink is Rambo with the same amount of emotion, same hair, and headband, and he smears red paint/blood/something all over his face when he fights.
  • Mellowlink is awesome.

    You're squiddamn right it is!

I broke down and got it. The first two episodes, really awesome. Its Rambo 2 with mechs, and if Rambo killed every person he served under in the chain of command when in 'Nam, and if Trautman was a dick.

  • See what I mean? Mellowlink is way more Rambo than regular Votoms.
  • how would you know you've never seen votoms :v
  • I've seen a few episodes of Votoms!
  • I could lend you Votoms if you actually want to watch it. Be warned that whoever mastered the DVDs put the OP and the first segment in the same chapter, so if you use "chapter skip" to blow past the OP you'll miss about half the episode, and for some reason it took me like ten episodes to realize this.
  • Your episode needed more squiddamn puns
  • I got the first DVD set of Uoodo i need to get around to watching them, then i can tackle the Kummen dvd i got from netflix.

  • Imma sick my squidbilly squidatives on ya dum summasquids.

Now I feel like breaking out my Votoms DVDs and watching them all like I did 3 years ago. GOOD OL' DAYS OF INTERNET DOGMA ARE COMING BACK.
  • I think I've managed to turn the internet against Daryl with regards to his stance on Code Geass not being a mecha show :>
  • I think the world is coming to terms to go against the podcast tyranny of the Principality of Surat.
  • Kind of off topic, but the Colony Drop article on Redline is ass.

    complain moar oldfags :/
  • I kinda forgot about that review, that was a while ago. I do contribute to there comments depending on the topic at hand. They promised a second part of the Bubblegum Crisis review they did, but who knows if that will ever happen.

And speaking of Votoms talk, Ive had a hanker'in for Votoms since thursday, which prompt me to write up a small review of Mellowlink for the blogs at the AAA Podcast. Care to comment if you like: http://www.aaapodcast.com/archives/4251/
  • You know I don't recall Mellowlink ever killing someone with the part of the gun where the bullets come out. I think it was 90% that huge Scopedog punch powered spike.

I guess that makes sense since they say the Anti-AT rifle is obsolete.
  • Well, he does use a spike, from the first 3 episodes ive seen so far. And it would be wrong to change it. Episode 3 had a girl who used the gun to shoot someone in the cockpit, so the gun isnt all that useless.

The show mentions its outdated Anti- AT rifles, and i dont expect alot of people who used them were able to get in close enough to take out a Scopedog like ol' Mellow here.
  • Chirico shot someone in the cockpit using his awesome Armor Magnum so Mellow's totally cramping his style.

DG, it's Anti Armored Trooper :3
  • It's kind of funny that according to AT VOTOMS the AT pilot are supposed to be the lowlife scum of the military, and then Mellowlink is all "no actually THESE guys are the lowlife scum..."
  • The boxes for the Actic Gear toy has some funny paragraph that ended with AT pilots calling themselves "fellas at the bottom" or something like that.
  • Yeah the boxes say

"Armored Trooper (AT), a human-type two legged weapon, has become an essential weapon in the battlefield. Soldiers call the Armored Troopers "VOTOMS." It is the abbreviation of "Vertical One-man Tank for Offense and Maneuver." As the survivability on AT is very low, VOTOMS is often used to make a mock of it meaning "fellers at the bottom."

That makes me want to buy more toys.
  • I guess since "v" and "b" often do the same "l/r" thing, that works..."VOTOMS" = "BOTOMS" = "bottoms".
  • Votoms is a weird name. I mean Gundam is like gun and freedom. Macross is like macro. Even Galient is like gallant. I guess Dougram is kind of weird. We should ask Tim Eldred.

    My mind is fucking blown.

  • Maybe you'd rather it be "Gunboy"?

Or do you prefer the Generic Universal Non-Dyne Augmented Maneuver System? Or maybe GERWALK, whatever that is.

Or, possibly, the Humanoid Extended-Activity Variable Yield General-purpose Externally-Articulated Responsor...
  • Or maybe GERWALK, whatever that is.
