  • Even if true it doesn't seem like a very big revelation. Clearly something went wrong at the writing process for that final stage and
    Spoiler:
synthetic vs. organic (I feel like the dam has already broke on spoilers here, and I'm pretty sure I did some hammering against it myself, but why not)
was never the main theme for the series. But the internet seems to be very set in finding a villain, be it Hudson or EA or any specific figure it would seem.
  • Interesting to contrast this to the whole Jennifer Hepler "fake(?) forum post" thing. Did Bioware ever disavow that?

Like Dave says, it's a bit too perfect. Of course they would have totally violated their standard procedure for the bit that everyone complains about. Of course the ending that was weird and unsatisfying and came out of left field would have been written by an introverted nerd. Of course there'd be Orders From Above to not talk about it to anyone ever and of course some brave insider--who was totally an awesome guy who totally wrote all the good parts--would break ranks and spill the beans. Certainly that's a much better story than "we ran out of time and money so this was all we could manage". Or, even worse, "this was how it was specifically planned by everyone all along".

Actually I think the latter is pretty close to the truth. It's certainly been Bioware's attitude. If anything, it's probably the case that the rest of the game is the anomaly, and that "synthetic versus organic" was what we were supposed to be playing all along.

The Mass Effect Artbooks would suggest this was the case. It was mentioned in the artbook for ME1 that the Geth were originally going to be a race of bat-like creatures, but they made them robots to fit in with theme of 'organics vs synthetics.

Still, the dark energy plotline is better foreshadowed and a lot more sensical.
  • Geth multiplayer characters, why won't you drop for me D: I have all of the others!

I did play in an all-Asari party today, and the onslaught of reaves and warps caused us to achieve something I've never seen before - staggering a Banshee out of her auto-kill animation (without just killing her outright.)
  • That's just called combined fire.
  • I like the new thread title.
  • I've only had it happen maybe two or three times. It's really damn hard.
  • Tali's Song.

  • I got an N7 Valiant from my commendation pack. It's like a better viper.
  • Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck you.
  • If it makes you feel better it's super good but I probably can't upgrade it.
  • I got my second Valiant and I still think it sucks.
  • Valiant's relatively on par with Black Widow. I'm on #2 as well, not that I ever use it.
  • Maybe I'll give it another try, but I really did not like it.
  • If anything like single player, the Valiant is a 3 shot widow with less of a recoil on it.
  • I got a Valiant last night, and holy crap that gun is amazing. I agree with my roommate that it's so good, it feels like cheating. It's bad enough that it gets three shots in rapid succession, but does it have to reload so quickly, too?
  • I think the stats have it about 2/3rds as strong as the Black Widow with hella fast reload (instant, if you cancel it) and really tiny recoil.
  • Basically I'm thinking of this as them apologizing for giving me an Eagle last time.
  • Wraith is okay I guess, I'm liking the M-99 Seyba.
  • I want a Wraiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith.

Though it's pointless to even get one, since I'll never get it to X or anywhere near there.

Needed a 1000 credits :( to get a premium spectre pack so I threw myself into a random gold. It actually wasn't too bad, we split up a lot and it ended up being like silver but rougher. 70k fucking credits for beating it is a pretty damn good reward and I got a Krogan Battlemaster! Even though we got full extraction they kicked me after the game :(
  • I want to do more golds. I like the idea of coordinating and working as a team instead of my usual "turn up Leonard Cohen and biotic charge anything in my field of vision."
  • Eviscerator is the go-to shotgun for small weight/decent power right? I feel like I should use a heaver shotgun, it seems like the best way to play would be to melee it up for rage, but if I'm doing that, kinda need good power recharge. What do you guys think?
  • You need it to be really high level before you can get 200% with it. Otherwise there's the disciple, which is lighter, but a lot worse, and also a rare item so it's harder to level up.
  • I forgot about the krogan weapon upgrade, unsurprisingly it turns out it's for shotguns. It brought the wraith to 150% and the disciple gets 200%. If anyone's around and want's to play, I'm ready to dick around with these two weapons and probably die a lot.
  • I feel a bit sad to say this but I don't think krogans make good vanguards. Maybe the idea is just get like a katana x or whatever is good that's pushing 190%+ and dispel barrier/biotic charge? Between that class one and other one I have, soldier seems like the better class for a krogan. I mean, I know it's hard to compete with a human vanguard but I don't think it stacks up to the other races either.
  • Been playing random gold matches all day. More of them have been wins than losses, so I'm pretty happy about that. It is now my preferred difficulty level.
  • Yeah, I'm actually reluctant to do silvers nowadays because they teach me habits that will get me killed on gold.
  • Krogard's more about being super durable, carrying heavy shit, and using charge only to restore barriers. On silver you can basically heavy melee anything you want and not die. Where human vanguard, especially if you're not taking double novas, has to be really cautious about what and when to charge. I definitely score a lot less with Krogard, but it's way less stressful.

    Also his tail is adorable.

Jon, out of curiosity how many of your randoms were Firebase White/Geth? Because it seems like the general internet sentiment is "let's just do this one map and abuse decoy to farm credits" which sounds miserable to me. Though I would like to actually learn how to play Gold, I don't really want to "learn" how to play it by learning one map with one specific strat to abuse AI.
  • I do get a lot of Firebase White, though for some reason people don't pick Geth much. I set my filters to Any and just take whatever comes. Last match I played was with some Eastern European guys who were really good. We were in Firebase Ghost with Cerberus, and we got full extraction. Phantoms are, bar none, the scariest fucking enemies in this game. Their little pea shooter takes most of your health instantly, and if you don't have people with Stasis, good luck hitting them with a sniper rifle (or maybe I'm just awful at sniping--I find it really hard). You just want snipers for cloak and some engineers/adepts for biotic synergy and, if fighting humans, stasis. I've done probably 20 of these gold matches randomly now, and my win average is less than 50%, largely because you almost always have one guy (and in horrible circumstances, three guys) who doesn't know how to coordinate, doesn't know how to play, and has a score of 3500 when everyone else is in the 60k range. Though I had this exceptional team where one dude dropped early, and we three-manned it until we got a hack on Wave 10 and just didn't have the firepower we needed. That was my favorite match so far.

Edit: That Eastern European match? Two of them were vanguards. I'm slowly seeing more folks willing to use them in Gold, but your play style has to change completely, so I'm thinking it's probably not for me. I'm way too suicidal with that shit.
  • Phantoms are definitely scary - there are a few classes that make them relatively trivial (Kroguard can stagger them pretty reliably, I think, and as you mentioned, Stasis works through barriers), but apart from that, we generally rely on calling out their locations and combined fire.

I've wound up in a couple of pub White/Geth matches, but usually I play with a particular preset group, so we just randomize it. :D Our silliest run so far has probably been the one where we all played Geth Infiltrators with Geth Plasma Shotguns. Any time 3 or 4 of us decided to team up on an Atlas, it was gone in moments.

Also, I'm glad Premium Spectre Packs are gone now, because buying those exclusively means I run out of medigel pretty quickly.
  • Is there a more reliable way to get Medigel? I'm always at 0.
  • Kroldier has fortification so they're pretty much as durable and inferno grenade is more useful than carnage. Maybe I have a bad prospective but if I have to use charge, things is fucked, 'specially if I'm using a heavy gun.
  • You'll get more medigel on average if you buy the cheaper packs (e.g. veteran or recruit.) From what I've seen, if you get medigel from a pack, you get 1 in a recruit pack, 3 in a vet pack, and 5 in a spectre/premium spectre pack - but a vet pack costs 4x a recruit pack, and a spectre pack 12x, so for medigel you're best off buying the cheapest packs.
  • Noted. Thanks!
  • That's also a great way to get a ton of rockets.
  • Yeah I guess that's why I'm flush with them. I got every common item and full upgrades.
  • Carnage is a piece of shit. You shouldn't even spec into it as a Krogard.

The whole point of charge is that you can take shitloads of damage then completely negate it by charging and restoring your shields. Krogards have something ridiculous like 2.4k shields when barrier is up, which is 3x a human vanguard, so you can basically just sit in fire and wait for charge to come back off of cooldown. I'll take that over inferno grenades any day.

One day maybe they'll fix the Krogard's bugged rage tree and they'll get like 80% damage resistance like they're supposed to.
  • I'll give it another shot, think I'm realizing what you alreadly told me, I should be playing more defensively than say a human.
  • Gold challenge, Reapers, Firebase Condor. How the fuck is this doable?
  • You know, ravagers aside, I think I hate Cerberus on gold more than Reapers. And an adept/human sentinel makes mincemeat of ravagers.
  • See, I think everything would be easier if I could run that adept/sentinel combo like we did one night. Banshees? Bring 'em on. But with pugs, I can't get folks to coordinate. This morning has been a losing streak of sufficient egregiousness as to cause me rage.
  • I tried the melee krogan build, with heavy melee I can 1HKO a rocket trooper completely through it's shields. I found it difficult to use and little more than a novelty, perhaps it might work better on an enemy other than geth since Pyros fuck up your day, Hunters cease to be hittable, Primes knockback, and Rocket Troopers will Rocket Trooper. Perhaps if they fix rage for Kroguard it'll be worth revisiting.

I think I'm in love with the Claymore, with penetration and the damage mod, it just ends just about anything's life, even Guardians from the front with shield's raised. I think that and the Seyba will be my go-to guns for my Kroldier.

Someone I was playing with told me about using the Justicar's biotic dome offensively, by placing it in a choke in front of your fireteam for the damage debuff and auto-warp. That could be interesting to try.
  • Someone I was playing with told me about using the Justicar's biotic dome offensively, by placing it in a choke in front of your fireteam for the damage debuff and auto-warp. That could be interesting to try.

Yeah. That person was me. A MONTH AGO.

Unless you weren't playing with us when I was using the Justicar, in which case I apologize.

  • I tried doing that a little last night, but that ended up being too dangerous for my taste.
  • I want a Justicar =\
  • What's dangerous? Bubble lasts a whole minute.
  • Those waves last a lot longer than a minute. Getting up to reapply it is just asking for an Atlas to sneak up on you.
  • Man who's even scared of Atlalts. They can't even kill you due to shield gating. :D

If they ever fix rage I think shields will be the way to go with Krogard. Barrier + rage is fuckin' 60% DR.

Though I guess Justicar gets ~80% with defense booblay and reave. She don't got Krogard shields, though.
