A Game of Thrones (TV)
  • Is it any good? Should I read the first book before I watch it? Does it have elves?
  • They should put this show on iTunes. They'd rake that C.R.E.A.M. in.
  • I saw an episode of it after watching some of Mildred Pierce.

    Ehh.
  • There was a lot more incest than I'd prefer. I've had trouble keeping up with everyones relationships, the two people knocking boots at the end were also related, right?
  • Yes, as for the episode I didn't think it was great but I will continue watching for a couple more episodes at least just to see if it gets better or continues to be mediocre.

Yeah I was a little unclear on that until I read a recap. Yeah, they're siblings.

... but hey the show's got a libidinous dwarf so it's all good.
  • For fans of the books this show is like super crack. Keep in mind that we have been waiting for the next book in the series for SIX YEARS. Though I do have to say trying to keep my wife up to speed on who was who while we watched the show was like teaching my five year old algebra.
  • I enjoyed the first episode. Watched it with my Dad and he seem to like it as well. I didn't have a problem understanding what was going on or who was who. I never read the books so I don't hold any kind of expectations of how true it is to the books.
  • I bought books 1-4 from amazon, and I like the first books so far. How close does the show seem to follow the books?
  • I'm about half way through the first book. For the most part it's VERY faithful. The only thing that's different is minor stuff. They aged up the children, which is a good thing.
  • I feel like we've made the queen a little over evil here. The old yeller thing is a bit much after the whole throwin' a kid out a window.
  • What you think she was boning her brother because she's such a nice lady?
  • They aged up the children, which is a good thing.

Ya, I felt really weird when ever Daenerys was naked because the actress looks really young and the character was like 13 in the book. Seems the actress is 23, I would not have guessed that.
  • Just finished episode 2. So far the show seems really uneven. I think some of the actors do a good job, such as the King and Arya, while Tyrion (the Dwarf) is great. Most of the kids, especially Jon, aren't all that great (besides Arya). I still don't know how I feel about Ned Stark, some scenes he's OK, some scenes he's not. A lot of the scenes seemed somewhat rushed. Most ever scene is just Start, Plot Point, End, they take almost no time to linger on the characters to make them feel human. I also have complaints about how it's blocked and what not.

Despite my criticism I am enjoying the show, I just expect better from the station that made The Sopranos and Carnivàle. I hope it gets better in the future.

Yeah, my joke for ep. 1 was that everyone's all about doggystyle because it's easy to block.
  • I just thought it was because they were horse people like the mongols. Therefore they would have intercourse similar to how horses do it.
  • That's just what they want you to think.
  • The incestors weren't mongols.
  • No they were twins that borne three kids.
  • I feel that the newest episode was better.
  • I was on board with that sword fighter at the end of the episode.
  • So far I'm more interested in the story about the bastard Stark at the wall. I really hope to see him go up against the mythic white walkers. The story about the brother and sister who have allied themselves with the nomadic tribe, is shaping up to be interesting as well. The brother is quite the jackass and not because he is a schemer but because after making his sister the queen of the tribe he still thinks he can bully and lord over her. As for the sister she shows promise. I like the transition she has in becoming more and more part of the tribe. Also the dwarf is the best character of them all so far.
  • Agreed, but he didn't slap enough children around this time. Oh well, there's always next week.
  • I keep meaning to watch this, but I keep forgetting over and over again.
  • Sadly, I dropped cable after seeing the first episode. But let me tell you, if you guys are looking for another great political/intrigue miniseries in a similar setting, you should check out "Pillars of the Earth." It's on Netflix "Watch it Now" as we speak. It has top-notch acting, intriguing characters, and lest I forget, copious amounts of sex and violence. However, unlike a lot of cable miniseries I've seen, Pillars of the Earth actually manages to generate some emotion and passion behind the sex and violence. It affects the characters as well as the viewers at home. The basic story's about a new cathedral being built and a community forming around it. Unfortunately, this community draws the ire of a very powerful cardinal and his allies, who wish to destroy it. There's also tons of assassinations and soothsaying and incest, and even a witch! I'd highly recommend it for those of you who are getting a kick out of Game of Thrones.
  • My friend keeps telling me to watch Game of Thrones or Camelot which he says is the same but with more magic and less incest.
  • I'm watching both... no need to choose.
  • Fact. Talking about Dragons will make girls hot.
  • I just watched the first two episodes. This show is pretty awesome. It has dire wolves, and dire wolves are bad ass.
  • Fuck yeah, those wolves give you a higher chance for crit hits.
  • I finished the first book the other day. I really like it, but it seemed like the whole book was just stetting up for book 2.
  • Don't know if this shit be spoilers so view at your own risk.

    Spoiler:

  • They are tearing ass through that book and I'm curious how faithful they remain considering the mortality of the majority of main characters.

I'm a little let down how much they are downplaying the wolves though. Just watched last nights episode and the wildlings in the woods attack had no presence of the 3 wolves still stalking Winterfell. If they continue to keep them minor, I at least hope they keep Ghost around.
  • Ya, I don't think they have shown any of the wolves but Ghost for the last few episodes. I hope they don't downplay graywind's role towards the end of the season. They are remaining pretty damn faithful to the book. Certian things they gloss over, but that was to be expected. I also like some of the stuff they added, such as the scene where Jaime is standing guard outside the kings room while the king is whoring with a dozen women.
  • "Whoring" is a verb we don't get to use often enough in daily conversation.
  • I think Robb's wolf was lying in front of the table in episode 4 when Robb was 'greeting' Tyrion.
  • Tyrion Fordring?
  • This was a good episode. Anyone else keep thinking of Steve Holt every time you hear Hodor yell his name?
  • My interest is waning fast. I don't know if it's me not liking most of the actors, or the very static framing, but I'm finding myself just not paying attention for 10, or more, minute chunks.
  • Too much standing around talking politics not enough wolves biting bits off of people. But that is the price they are paying for staying close to the source material.
  • Long live the Lannisters!
  • Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. I love the actors playing 'most' of the Lannister's but the books have tainted me on the she-bitch.
  • I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan of this show. I have no intention of reading the books, something like TrueBlood. And, something like TrueBlood, all the gore and sex is kind of a turn-off. I'm brought back by the Khal, who is completely badass (I know I contradict myself, since he is basically walking sex and violence), and the promise of dragons. Also wolves. And maybe wolves fighting dragons. And horny dwarves.
  • The only way to win the game of thrones is not to play.
  • KING OF THE NORTH! LONG LIVE THE YOUNG WOLF!
  • From those who haven't read the books and knew what was going to happen. I'm kind of curious about what you think/feel about what happened last week.

Now that I am all caught up on the books I can't help but feel a lot of tv viewers, used to certain tropes, are going to be pretty pissed, pretty often.
  • Me to. I know some people complain that there is to much standing around talking and not enough action, and those people aren't going to feel any better about what comes next. I think in the second book almost all the battles (except one major one and a few minor skirmish) don't happen on the page, but are delivered to people as 'Did you hear what [So and So] did at [This place]!'. I wonder if they are going to do a book a season? If so what are they going to do once they get caught up with Martin? With the rate the books seem to have been coming out I would be surprised if book 6 is out by the time they would have started season 6.

Also I like to think most of the fans of this series are like this http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/06/20/miss-usa-game-of-thrones/
  • After all that is happened thus far. My money is still on the imp.
  • Considering this season is over and it's half of A Game of Thrones, I'm gonna say no to 1 book per season. I don't much have an issue with the standing around talking, I just hate the way it's shot when just standing around talking. Not a lot of the actors are charismatic enough to pull that off. I don't really need everyone standing perfectly still, all in frame, while they banter back and forth when they come off as dry.

The problem I really have though is, I liked the show, couldn't take the pace and moved to the books. Now that I've read the books I'm feeling the limitations of the medium. There are a fuckton, and I mean a metric fuckton of characters, with most important ones not being shallow, two dimensional caricatures either. Examples being Jaime and the Hound. I've really grown to love Jaime a lot which sounded weird when I said that to someone who just started the show. With the breathing room the books have for development he gets fleshed out, more than I think they will allow on tv.

I'm just interested to see reactions because Martin is a dick. A straight up asshole. He puts these characters through hell and a lot, don't come back.
