  • Well said DG. Who the hell are you talking about by the way?
  • "Really, the ball is in their court. They are the one's making the positive claim."

Well, yeah, but "gay marriage is OK and won't cause any problems" is a positive claim.

It could be disproven by example.

    What in the hell...

Look, I don't know where you're getting the idea that anybody believes ANY marriage will be problem-free, but that's not really the issue. The issue is whether or not allowing gay people to marry is the right thing to do. Things can cause problems and still be the right thing to do. Ending slavery caused problems. Allowing women in the workplace caused problems. Ending child labor caused problems. But it was the right thing to do. They are good causes. Propping up an American caste system is an evil cause. Good people can take up evil causes, but just because they're inherently good people does not act as an EMP blast to the rest of the world's moral compass.
  • I think RB was saying that the people who passed Amendment 1 in North Carolina don't want to see that particular claim put to the test, because if homosexuals were allowed to marry, the marriage equality opponents would soon discover that the world would not in fact end in fiery orgasm of burning blood pouring from the sky. That was his point, I believe. They're terrified of having their own claim refuted, so they won't allow it to be tested.

I'll say this, though. I'm really sick of all my white, heterosexual, upper middle class Libertarian friends acting all blase about this, mouthing platitudes about how the government shouldn't be involved in ANY marriage blah blah blah states rights blah blah. If you find yourself saying these things, realize this: You are not helping. Your apathy supports the status quo.

(That last comment was not directed at anyone here in particular, I'm just sick of the Libertarian snark I've been reading in my Facebook feed.)
  • Oh. I guess that's happening to me too. I'm confused on how anyone can say government shouldn't be involved in ANY marriage and state's rights in the same sentence. Last I checked, a state is still part of the government.
  • That's commie talk!
  • Another reason to not use facebook?
  • I've got the same thing going on facebook, but I find it a reason TO use it. Anytime I get too much faith in humanity I just check out my facebook feed. That many of these people that hilariously offend me are also in my major is just what I need to refuel my rage and sadness.
  • This sounds wonderful: http://t.co/8RxcUPGM
  • It is kind of a pain that the people making strong states' rights arguments always are making them in support if some crazy thing. "We think that states should set their own educational policy!" Yes! "Because we want to teach creationism!" ...no. "We think that states should handle their own border security!" Yes! "And we'll do that by having the cops stop anyone with dark skin and demand to see their birth certificate!" ...no.

@knin: So wait, Hansen proposes that we increase the tax on gasoline but then give it back. Why not just let everyone keep the money? (Also there'd be plenty of water to irrigate the Central Valley if it weren't all being sent to Los Angeles.)
  • I think his plan is to punish the petroleum companies, but ignore that. Let's focus on the, "if they use Canada’s tar sands, San Francisco will be UNDERWATER" part.

I dunno, I work in a Caribbean neighborhood, I went to school in a hispanic one, not to get too stereotypical but gay anything can trigger some angry responses in both those places. Sitting in my locker room right now there are 3 of us, 2 are antigay with one being borderline violent about it.

Most of the shop guys who come here are at least homophobic and this is liberal NYC. Not saying that means anything in the larger scale of things but in my limited experience anti gay is very much a prominent thing to the point i'm not willing to push

Gay rights and abortion are the issues that divide the country the most between conservatives and liberals.

    ...and NASCAR
  • NASCAR isn't that divisive. Some people lean to the left, some people die.
  • I really don't think they are. I think they are convenient excuses for people who want to have something, anything to righteously fight. I think they are granfalloons.
  • But NASCAR is SO boring, they're still using push rod engines and they only turn left.

Kind of like how many socialist systems of government and economics would work out just fine if people weren't such lying, greedy assholes all the time. One might take that as evidence that arguments in favor of such systems sound good theoretically, but inevitably lead to problems in their implementation.
  • Frankly, that's a problem with the implementation of any type of government.
  • Well, those with a few checks and balances work out a little better than those without.
  • Wow, that is fucking disgusting.
  • I desperately want to believe that both ends of the deal (that someone would make this and that someone else would buy it) are just a weird joke.
  • Even at it's best, it's an extremely repulsive joke. (distasteful wasn't a strong enough word)
  • I have google chat on my Android phone and use that over text messaging whenever possible.
  • Does google chat function like text messaging in that it has push messages and can run in the background? Graz and I text back and forth while at work. It would be good to not use real texts to do this, but not if it requires me to keep a program in the foreground the whole time.
  • I can't stand chat programs because they seem to demand additional haste in replying. Most folks replying to me would be doing so via keyboards, and I can't keep up at all on a phone keyboard. Those things are absolutely nightmarish to use. At least via text there's always a lag on both sides, so you never feel all that pressured to provide an instantaneous response.

Edit: Yeah Dave, my Gchat shows a notification in the status bar and makes my notification light blink. Presumably you could mod it to be more obnoxious if you wanted it to be.
  • You can use google chat through a browser if you want.
  • Oh, I do. I meant in the context of phone chatting. Sloppy writing, sorry.
  • A proper response would have been: "you're out of your element, Donnie."
  • Facebook Messenger on a phone will do push notifications if you allow it.

The issue is that it comes out of your data, so (presumably) having Messenger/Chat on all the time means you're using some of your allowance to keep the push notifications active.
  • Smart diplomacy in action. Japanese manga artists obsessed with "strong female characters" who don't wear pants are better at tradecraft than the present American Presidential administration.

Remember that when you say "At Least He's Not A Fucking Republican" and pull the lever marked "D".
  • We went through eight years of "the past behavior of Democrats does not mitigate, excuse, or recontextualize the actions of the current administration!" but now that argument is apparently okay.

PS Plame? Seriously? Plame wasn't on active ops when her cover was blown. Plame wasn't in danger of being fucking killed because her cover was blown. Plame's cover wasn't blown in an attempt to show that the sitting President was Totally Tough On Them Terrists.
  • The point I'm making is that a.) no party is blameless for this kind of shit, so trying to claim it as a point in favor of your preferred party doesn't really fly and that b.) I don't really care what goes on in the world of covert intelligence agencies, as they have very little impact on my daily life and even less public oversight.

It works just like texting, except it's faster and you can search in it and it doesn't eat up your phone's space. You do not have to have an app running at all.

  • And that is why you say, "No, officer, you may not search my car. Am I free to go?"
  • Note that this won't actually stop them searching your car, but it means that when you go to court over it they aren't allowed to say "he consented to a search", and therefore if they took the money and sent you to jail they violated your civil rights.
  • I wonder how many people don't recognize the distinction there. If you forcibly prevent them from searching stuff, you're now definitely going to jail with an obstructing official business charge, perhaps even an assault charge if you're aggressive about it. After doing slated (jailed) arraignments for a while now, I've come to the conclusion that I will do everything in my power to avoid being arrested, ever.
  • If you invoke your fourth amendment rights, do police still get to damage your stuff without recompense?
  • That's what I do. I've been stopped so many times that I go completely passive. "yes, sir. No, sir. Nothing, sir." I want to give them no excuse to ever hand cuff me again.
  • You've being arrested? How can you still work at a school still?
  • Courts have repeatedly ruled that damage during a "reasonable search" is not reimbursable, so no.
  • Restrained, never arrested. I got stopped and cuffed during a drug sweep where I work because a white, skinny 25 year old looks suspicious at 11am...
  • As far as I know, it's not really the arrest that matters, just the conviction. I was arrested when I was 19 and have never had a problem getting a job. Since then I've had employment with banks, and the government.
  • Arrest/dismiss isn't a problem. Convictions are what count.

RB: But (if I recall this correctly), if the search is ruled unreasonable, §1983 lets you recover minor money damages for property destroyed during the course of the search. It won't get you much more than nominal damages, though, as the point of the suit isn't cash but civil rights protection.
