  • That's why I hate you and your dick. I count for a large chunk of that pie chart.
  • Can I get some of that pie.

    Pumpkin, please.
  • Doesn't Daryl LIKE that show, though?

Yeah he did say that in the last episode of AWO a month ago  . But it is true there is not much to the show content wise, or too much as the case may be, which is why so many people dont like it. However, when i saw an episode segment where
    Spoiler:
all the characters turn into zombies and then... nothing, thats the end of the segment
...well you kind of have to watch it to get the full extent of it. I thought it was funny in its apathy to continuity, so i was entertained [isnt that what really matters?]. Also the random flurry of english swears and curses coming from the japanese voice actresses is funny to me as well. :)
It is unique and different and should be given a look at least. We dont get alot of creative outbursts from anime creators nowadays. I just hope this is not the only thing to get made... :?
i also kinda want somebody to make fun of it for what it is, more than just criticize it for what it doesnt do. If that makes sense at all.

  • Sekirei
    http://atemonai.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/sekirei_scan.jpg

Minato Sahashi is an Ordinary College Student, even though he's failed his entrance exams twice. As he's walking down the street, he suddenly finds a Magical Girlfriend falling from the sky and crashing into him. She is Musubi, one of 108 beings known as Sekirei, about to be engaged in a Battle Royale across Tokyo, headed by the mysterious MBI organization. With a kiss, Minato "wings" Musubi and becomes her Ashikabi, or master, for the battle royale. The Sekirei Plan begins.

Trailer. I wonder if the guy who makes these Funimation trailers loses a bit of his soul with each new one he does. It's on Hulu at the moment and it does contain topless action.

    Boobies for the win!
  • [quote="Youtube dude"]this is a fucking embarrassment. THIS is why anime can't be taken seriously as an art form.

not only that, but it's fucking insulting that FUNi executives think that the consumer base is stupid and shallow enough to be lured in by such a shitty, base ad campaign.

of course, the sekirei dvds sold out in their first week. you're right. they are that stupid and shallow.

    i feel humiliated.

i hope you assholes drown in your pools of money
  • This is also relevant

@kindergraphs Shut the fuck up, I have watched season 1 and 2 and enjoyed it. It is a GREAT fucking anime, so dont fucking judge a book by its cover.

    Nigger

It's good they put that last part in there, you know just in case you thought they might have not been a terrible person.

The fact that people need that info-graphic to point out what the show was referencing mildly annoys me. The Chuck to the Future segments before that lame-ass music video was fun.

I actually enjoy the show, it embodies the no-hold-barred, 'do whatever the fuck you want' attitude of 80s/90s OAVs. I also like when the Japanese try to parody western pop-culture because it's usually off in the oddest way.

Also the Transformers episode was pretty rad.

I recall Dave and Joel discussing it on an episode, actually. Dave didn't understand why they would willingly turn prisoners into werewolves.

It's on instant watch and it is utterly ridiculous

EDIT: I mean even more ridiculous than the level of ridiculousness that Pokemon usually is.

I don't want to color your perception of the show going into it, so I'll give you what I had at 3 AM when a group of friends and I discovered this gem on Netflix Instant Watch.

"A plague sweeping across Germany creates a race of so-called Demoniacs, horrifying creatures that can fuse their bodies with technology -- including cars and motorcycles -- to become even deadlier. But not all hope is lost. Enter the Xenogenesis Assault Team, a human squad tasked with policing the Demoniacs and observing them closely -- without becoming infected by them. Ichiro Itano directs the visionary anime series."

I don't know what else you could possibly need, beyond AWESOME CG FRESH FROM 1998
  • Its not out in America but you may wanna keep an eye out for Basquash! Its about giant robots that play basket ball and wear shoes by nike. Also a bunch of fanservice I guess. Here's the opening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PottNtLE-Ys
  • This is, the ultimate Fast Karate anime to review:

    http://www.ioffer.com/img/item/119/779/583/dobG.jpg

Wild 7, about a bunch of dudes on motorcycles taking the law in their hands. Its one part Easy Rider, one part Die Hard, one part Dirty Harry and all parts too awesome for one mans testicles to handle.

I DARE YOU, to watch this anime if you think your man enough. The ball is in your court, so what you gonna do now?
  • This isn't an anime, but I wanted to suggest a game for you to try: Super Mario Bros X

It looks like a great mashup of Nintendo games AND has (simultaneous) multiplayer features!
  • I figure what better show to review on a podcast about cartoons than a show about making said cartoons. Oh yes I'm talking about a 2 episode OVA Animation Runner Kuromi. The story of Mikiko "Kuromi" Oguro's experience as the new production manager of an anime studio full of some rather offbeat employees who need a swift kick in the pants to meet the deadline. Do this plucky young gal have what it takes to oversee production of cartoons or will her dreams all come crashing down? This is some serious business.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/video/10358/#play-1 Here's the first episode dubbed (the sub is also available)

    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/video/10360/#play-1 And here's the second

Next up the BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad the music anime about a Japanese indie band. The majority of the story follows Yukiko "Koyuki" Tanaka who takes his boring life and shoves thanks to the rock and roll he's introduced to by Ryusuke Minami, a guitarist with shady past who once lived in America. Ryusuke is out to form a new band after a few too many disagreements with his current one and Koyuki becomes their singing sensation. The band starts to get noticed and that causes Ryusuke's past to resurface and the band may not survive the fallout. It's a story about growing up, becoming a man and learning how to rock out. The dub is fantastic especially if you enjoy your excessive f-bombs but this show is all about culture clash and while the Japanese version has heaping helpings of Engrish and some obvious cultural barriers implied the dub leaves a lot of that by the wayside so the best way to watch this show the first time would probably be in Japanese.

That's the Hulu page with all 26 episodes. You can get the box set for around 20 bucks now though and this is a show worth owning.

I've lurked a bit and have read that at least Dave has seen Dai-Guard the series that combines giant robots with office politics and I seem to recall he said he thought it was pretty good but regardless I'd like to hear you guys talk about it because if nothing else it's a pretty unique show. Likewise I recall props being given to Baccano and Durarara on the podcast but I'd like a more thorough dissection of those two shows, I suppose that might run into the dangerous territory of being too good to get a good podcast from but I think they'd be worth a shot.

A couple more giant robot shows I don't think you've covered (and I could be wrong about this) are Godannar and Gun x Sword. Godannar's cast should leave you with plenty of things to talk about and so should the fights. Gun x Sword is a lot more low key but it's got a giant robot piloted by stripper poll dancing among other absolutely absurd and kind of awesome concepts. What can I say, I love me some giant robots.

    Keep up the funny guys.
  • I'm really liking Kino's Journey, which is on Time Warner's Watch it Now channel for the Anime Network.

  • Gaiking: Legend of Daikyu Maryu is on hulu. Its a remake of a 70's robot anime without much linking it to the old show.

    Submarine 707R

In the near future, the world is at war: the USR, a mysterious organization led by Admiral Red and his powerful submarine UX, wants to stop human exploitation of the seas, having torpedoed many ships and ports. The world's navies unite and form the Peace Keeping Navy, or PKN, to fight the "terrorists". Every major UN member contributed a submarine, though the Japanese entry is an old clunker, the 707, and it is running late to the inaugural meeting. When the meeting finally begins, Admiral Red and the UX come to spoil the show with a spread of torpedoes. Arriving late in the battle, Captain Youhei Hayami steers the 707 into the way of a torpedo launched at the supercarrier that serves as the PKN's flagship. His ship is destroyed, but the flagship survives.
Six months later, Captain Hayami is given command of the salvaged and rebuilt 707, and takes a crew of old comrades and brand new cadets to sea to fight Admiral Red once more.

I think it has potential. Insane and impossible boats and submarines , improbable mini subs driven by children, weird sexualization of a 8 year old for no apparent reason, HAL

    Zillion Burning Night

    EDIT:Now with synopsis

In the peaceful aftermath of the Nozsa wars, the charismatic heroes known as "The White Knights" have changed career paths to becoming music making rockstars. J.J., Dave, Champ and Apple have formed a rock band called, "The White Nuts". Their music career would soon be interrupted by a new threat of colonial settlers. But the former Knights only have a limited supply of Zillium for the Zillion guns. A mysterious stranger named Rick turns out to be an old lover of Apple.
  • i remember playing those games for the Sega master system zillion was the shit.
  • I did enjoy this Zillion OVA, and enjoyed the Method to Madness Podcast on it like 3 months ago.
  • Lucky Star

    http://seitoacademy.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/lucky-star1.jpg

When I first heard about this show, it was described to me as Moe Seinfeld. I will never get those 600 minutes back.
  • [quote="Policetruck"]I will never get those 600 minutes back.

You waited that long? I really don't understand anime fan tolerance at all.
  • I saw one half of one episode of Lucky Star when I lived with Erin and Noah and that was 10x enough.
  • Half an episode was my tolerance level, too.
  • ... and here I watched the whole thing and didn't mind it so much. Wondering if it has something to do with having a teenage daughter that reminds me of one of the characters.
  • I've been using Lucky Star to fall asleep to whenever I take an afternoon nap. I don't think it's bad, it's just that it has no substance. I just find it boring.

    http://static.reelmovienews.com/images/gallery/street-fighter-the-legend-of-chun-li-poster.jpg
I recommend this solely for the fact that the Japanese ghost from Black Eyed Peas plays Vega . I'm sure it contains a lot of fodder for a good episode.
  • [quote="VinceA"]... and here I watched the whole thing and didn't mind it so much. Wondering if it has something to do with having a teenage daughter that reminds me of one of the characters.

    Creeeeeeepy.
  • I think we are forgetting the best part about Lucky Star which is that I BUY SAUSAGE
  • [quote="Dave"]I saw one half of one episode of Lucky Star when I lived with Erin and Noah and that was 10x enough.

(Small Rant) This is why I kinda cant stand todays anime crowd, because they all talk about, UP DA BUTT, how awesome some anime is and when you get to it, it just falls apart right outta the packaging. This was one of those animes.

I think I made it to like episode 3 or 4, or at least to the Initial D parody... then stopped, dead.

Dave wins this round on "what point do you stop watching a crappy anime."

I have that movie, and I have yet to watch it. I bought it pretty much like 2 years ago... still havent seen it. I think that might be a sign of some sort.
  • Legend of Chun-Li is comedy gold. M. Bison steals some poor bastard's bucket of fish.

Did I say I wanted to do anything unfatherly with either the characters or my daughter?
  • The implications were there, you just needed a douchebag to make them.
  • Master of Martial Hearts just got added to Netflix Instant Watch. It's super stupid

Also a heads up; A crap load of Funimation titles just got added onto Instant Watch like Birdy the Mighty, Casshern Sins, Sengoku Basara, Slayers, Eden of the East, and some others.
  • I hear that one is full of mind-rape and fail. Supposed to be a total downer. Might be perfect for D&J.
  • People who say things are full of fail are, themselves, full of fail.

    Think about that.
  • I watched the first four episodes this mourning and it's at that level of badness that I can enjoy. I love things that have  a nonsensical plot, improbable/impossible weapon usage and idiotic actions that the characters take. So far it's been hinting at some stuff, but I would not imagine that the ending would have mind rape or anything like that. I'll find out tonight.

There is an uncomfortable amount of punching the clothes of chicks that makes this show not at all watchable around people.
  • how about Freezing or Demon King Daimao both are full of tits.
