  • I've seen that one. At one point, I think they blow up a whale, but beyond that, it just has its creepy sexuality. I think once you've gone Mad Bull, there's no sex lines left to cross unless maybe Yasunori Umetsu is involved.

If you can find it, try Techno Police 21C. It's one of those 80s animes, but it's big advantage is being dubbed into English in Hong Kong. I saw a clip, but I can't find it other than on VHS.

More available, maybe try Ghost Hound. It's concept comes from Masamune Shirow and was written by Chiaki J. Konaka, the guy who wrote Lain, Armitage, and Big O. It's definitely more in the vein of stuff like Lain, being slow and about freaky stuff like a narcoleptic kid who astrally projects himself to see people who have died. At least I think that's what happening.
  • Techno Police 21C

    Aghhhhh! This show is unbearable.
  • Now I MUST watch it.
  • behold. the era of shame and awful anime watching. but those make the best shows and yes. they do blow up a whale. a giant 50 whale. gonna check out techno . might make for good group watching
  • I'm certain you haven't watched Nichijou and Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate is based off of a virtual novel and Nichijou is... well like if everything you imagined as a kid was in an anime about your life.
  • If it came out this year, let alone last year, don't even bother.
  • Well I mean if you go onto those free anime sites... or the shit that is crunchyroll its up there.
  • free anime sites... or the shit that is crunchyroll.

    Well, yep.
  • I just want to inform everyone that the fifty foot whale in Jungle De Ikou was not in fact killed, he just had a small chunk knocked off of him that was later served as dinner by the main character's mom.
  • hello mr chapman. the third in the whole triangle of podcast heaven
  • I knew they ate part of the whale. It's how I learned that whale meat is apparently a big deal in Japan. I just didn't remember if they blew it up or if they just injured it, but since it doesn't blow up, that really just underlines my point that it's really just the creepy masturbation for superpowers by two little girls and an old African man who may be a witch doctor with an elephant tusk jutting from his groin.
  • I kind of liked Eden of the East. It's stubborn refusal to answer any important questions just made it even more endearing.
  • Tried to watch that. Half way through the first episode I wanted him to shoot her in the face. I don't know if I'll go any further.

If you're watching for the girl, you might want to stop. She doesn't come in any flavor other than bland.

  • I wasn't. Her generic anime girl bullshit made me not want to watch the show assuming she stuck around.
  • Ah, good to know. I was almost considering watching that show.
  • Ah, good to know. I was almost considering watching that show.

If you watch it, watch it for the crazy shit that happens. Not the generic love story.
  • I loved the premise of Eden of the East, but felt the execution was lacking. The Juri/Juli (The operator lady) system, Careless Monday, Mr. Outside, Noblese Oblige....I love and eat those concepts up in shows. I had no opinion of the girl and was more interested in those concepts up until I think the rich/crazy lady episode, which I think was the high point to me of the show. From there on it seemed to focus too much on the girl and her friends, and my interest in Eden waned significantly.

I watched all of the series except the last episode. Due to the lack interest and because I found out that the conclusion of the story would be done through two movies that I knew would take months before I would see them. I tried giving it a go on Netflix a couple of times, but I didn't enjoy the show enough to re-watch it again. I don't think it's a bad show, but if the first episode didn't entice you, then it's just not the show for you.

I still think you guys need to do Master of Martial Hearts and make sure to watch all 5 episodes.
  • The TV series has a solid enough conclusion. You don't have to watch the Eden movies, which from all accounts I've heard so far are terrible. I most often see them compared to the Matrix sequels.

And yes, it's a series about plot, not character. The main character is an amnesiac. His semi-love interest has few defining characteristics. So what? That's not the hook that's supposed to keep you interested in the show. It's like complaining about the color scheme in a black and white film. If you're focusing on the girl's squishiness, you're doing it wrong.

The execution is definitely off in Eden, but I'm surprised to see so many people on the Internet dismissing it so casually, yet praising Moribito or Stand Alone Complex, which have the exact same problems with pacing.
  • Does this show have James Dean in any way shape or form? Gods I loved that movie.

No, it's not supposed to keep my attention but it does actively kill my interest. It's also not like your example. It's more like "I don't like Mel Gibson. So I'm going to be distracted and annoyed by his presence, despite the quality of the movie he's in." If I'm going to be saddled with her for the entirety of the show I'm just not going to bother. I have a hard time with anime in the same way I'm not into tv shows for the most part. Too long of a time investment. I'm not going to waste 6+ hours if a good chunk of the content of a show bothers me, or it's completely average.

In movie form I'll devour anything because in that same 6 hour block, I can potentially watch 3 completely different and self contained things. Too bad most anime isn't a movie and if it is, it's usually tied to a tv show I didn't watch.
  • I'm just saying "I don't like the female lead" is the same reason Gerald gives for not watching Planetes, and as a result he's cheating himself out of seeing one of the best science fiction anime shows in the past decade. If you don't want to invest the time, fine. That's a valid reason.
  • ^This. So much. Planetes deserves a spot in the pantheon of Truly Great Anime and doesn't get nearly as much love as it should. As for Eden, I thought it was great, though the first movie felt like a bit of a retread. The plot really grabbed me and I honestly never had a problem with the female MC, who's not really the focus of the show anyway. Then again, I'm not the kind of person to not watch a show just because of one character, no matter how annoying the are.
  • I dunno, Rbx5. The big-breasted lesbian in Airmaster makes it damn difficult to watch an otherwise awesome show...

No, but it does have the voice of Dean Venture. As a sad lad in immediate danger of getting his dick cut off.
  • motherfucking DOG SOLDIER
  • Shin Koihime Musou? its a harem show based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is based on a erotic visual novel.
  • My eyes! MY EYES!!!! WHY! WHY!!!! WWWWWHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just watched Dance in the Vampire Bund. The first episode was alright. The second episode. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I think I need to go sit in my shower for a couple hours.
  • What was your thought process?

Were you thinking: "Boy, wouldn't it be a good idea if I watched Dance in the Vampire Bund?"
  • I have heard nothing about it... I thought I would give it a try. Now I kinda wanna die.
  • I'm curious, didn't the naked twelve year old draped in red velvet on the box cover give you some inkling of what you were getting yourself into? You know, kind of like how Rin: Daughter of Mnemosyne's ads all contained a prominently featured ball-gag?
  • I hope you didn't watch it solely on the strength of Dave and Joel's urban dictionary entry.

I thought it was some kind of weird anime dress. I didn't realize she was naked. Or 8.

I think Dave and Joel should watch and review Dance in the Vampire Bund for the podcast just because of that great Urban Dictionary entry.
  • Sorry, but that excuse doesn't fly. Even if it was dress, you can still totally see the part that would be the underwear. Koi Kaze has more innocent DVD box art.
  • @Gokiburi: I've actually been meaning to watch Airmaster for awhile, so I'll have to put that to the test.

Actually, I'm currently watching an anime movie from the 90s called Spriggan. It's done by Studio 4C and is absolutely gorgeous to watch, especially the fight scenes. Plus it has an enormous fat cyborg guy with a gattling gun, razor wire, crazy ancient technology that ties into Biblical events, and Akira-esque deformed genetically altered kids. And a French guy. So yeah, might make for a good podcast, except it's actually pretty good thus far, so comedic potential may be low.
  • I am pretty sure they already did Spriggan.
  • Oh sweet, I'll have to re-listen to that.
  • Uhm, I crave Urban Square but.. uhm can't seem to find a decent torrent or get seeders for my positively ancient one. Any help guys?

ETA: Oh and codec pack too, I'm a little behind and this laptop is on a fresh install
  • Since this thread is back I'm going to suggest the same thing as always:

    X:The Movie (not the show)

    Photobucket
  • I just ran into my VHS copy of that in the closet the other day. Fitting, because that's where all the characters in this show are, too.
  • I'll see that and raise you a http://cow.org/csi/
  • They'll do some form of X at some point. The 2001 series and OVA were both Kawajiri. The movie just has stupid character designs and blood erupting out of the floor, and then no one cared.
  • Jesus, X the Movie. Goddamn that thing (TV series to a lesser extent). I confess buying and reading all of the manga, it is my folly on the level of someone who's seen all of Lost. The body count of X is pretty comical, all things considered. It's like a Tomino show in miniature.

You guys haven't done the Halo: Legends or Batman: Gotham Knight anthologies, have you? Those are full of things both half-decent and pretty stupid.
  • I remember oddly enjoying that movie if only because it made no fucking sense and people kept dying horribly for some cause I didn't understand. That and decapitated head hugging.
  • Don't forget sword baby.
  • I already did because I don't know what that is.
