My fighting games blog
  • With everyone doing all these cool projects, it seems lame to just plug my blog, but maybe someone here is interested. Frying Over a Jungle is my SF4 progress blog, where I play for at least 1 hour a day, and as much as I can with some friends who are better than I am, and record how I'm doing, what I'm practicing, etc. I'm no stranger to fighting games, but I've always been a casual player, and gotten scrubbed out of tournaments in the first or second round. Inspired by gootecks' "Scrubs to Winners Clubs" feature where he trains dedicated noobs to try and make top 8, I wanted to try and focus my practice and gauge my progress to actively get better. Since a lot of people are coming back to fighting games with SF4, it'll be useful for someone to figure out how the game works. Also, since skill at any previous game (Third Strike, MvC2, Tekken) does not at all translate to SF4, everyone's coming in at the ground floor, so I can hopefully solicit comments and advice as well. Some decorative stuff (like the title) needs to still go up, but right now I have my daily posts, lots of featured videos, and a "Podcast" feed, which is really just whatever valuable videos I want to take with my on my iPod to watch and learn from on the road.

I've never really maintained a public blog, much less one with a specific goal, so this will be an interesting experiment for me.

I'm enjoying reading it, even though I never understand what you're talking about. I'm not so much good as I am terrible at SF4.
  • Adding a bookmark now.

My posts are really short right now, because I'm trying to remember to update. But I realize it's going to be less accessible if I talk in fighting game shorthand, so I'm going to make posts more verbose and add a glossary, actually. I'd love to hear feedback on what parts you like, and what parts make no sense so I can improve it in the future. :D

I feel just a little bit smarter for reading it; that's probably my favorite part. I know I'll never be able to do half the things you talk about, but I feel like I might understand them at some point.
  • I remember an old thing on Fast Karate where people found the podcast while searching for nude pictures of Mariska Hargitay, and now google is telling me how people are finding my blog, and it's a little odd.

If someone comes upon my website while searching for "2009 butt juncle.com", I can't help but think I must be doing something wrong.
  • My fighting games blog is now at dashupthrow.com for the two people who actually read it. I've been playing a lot of SF3: 3rd Strike recently, which has been pretty awesome. SF4 to a lesser extent, and VF5 is on hold until some friends come by from out of town. Forthcoming is some more KOF XII and hopefully some match videos.
  • You ever play 3s on GGPO?
  • I have before once, and I got dismantled so thoroughly by a Ken that I wasn't sure if lag or lack of practice is what did me in. I'd be a lot more inclined to play you guys, or people I know are not griefers or dicks than strangers on the internet. Mostly I've been playing my friends, who are all better than me at Street Fighter, in an attempt to improve.
  • Good games yesterday eva, sorry I completely misread your Steam IM yesterday and got on XBox Live. I'm probably setting up GGPO and 2df sometime today or tomorrow. Which do you prefer? 2df seems to have replays or something built in, so that's a point in its favor. Do they both handle lag well?
  • GGPO is much better at handling the lag then 2df, although with 2df you don't have to worry about black bars covering your screen randomly in third strike.
  • Updates, now I can record matches, so I'm picking some highlights from my weekly sessions, both good and bad, and putting them up on the website.

Good games tonight to eva091, seems like I'm having to learn the Dudley matchup both with my usual comp. partner and now you. I need to un-scrubify my Urien, I missed more supers than I hit.
  • The latest 3rd Strike match videos from my weekly sessions with my friends are up on my ScrewAttack show page:

I'm the Alex player, the Chun in white, and the mediocre Makoto, not the good one. The rest are my friends playing. Next time, I'll try to put up some captions or something.
