Alas, my attempts to resolve the situation through my current skillset has not helped as much as I thought it would:

Golgo: It's not impossible. I used to bullseye whores with my M16 back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.

"Could you explain to us how your script is in any way different from Predator?" asked one of the suits.

"Predator takes place in Guatemala," Erik Wolpaw explained, using his I'm-explaining-something-idiotic-to-a-child voice. "Meet the Sandvich takes place inside a refrigerator in Guatemala."

"Where you can hear Predator happening outside of the refrigerator," clarified Jay Pinkerton.

"Also, Predator is two hours long," Erik continued. "Ours is four hours long."

"Right," said a suit, "but only because the script includes the first half of Predator..."

    We nodded.

"... then all of Road House, and then the rest of Predator."
    Epic.

    No it was from Renegade.

I'm curious to find out what manga that comes from.

Armor doesn't offer much protection, but enemies may be too distracted to shoot.
  • Renegade, River City Ransom... whatever. Same series.
  • Same series.

But one was the best game ever made.

And one was arguably the worst.

Though, to be fair to you, they did have the same eyeballs.
  • Finished Golgo13 Volume 4 and GOLGO13 KILLED DODI AL-FAYED. I mean fuck Japan don't you have any taste? Although Golgo13 does kill the man responsible for Princess Di's death. Golgo13 Killing Dodi seems more beleivable than some of the Theories out there.

I don't know if that's a joke or if it's real, but you've got to be incredibly bored or desperate to want to wade through someone's random typing. I imagine that 80 percent of what I type is feline-oriented captions, dumb jokes, links to youtube, and posts related to tabletop gaming. Probably 19 percent is either the backspace or delete key. Most likely, 1 percent is actually sensitive information, if even that much.
  • Seriously? How much keyboard chatter are you intercepting. Given the amount of crap that's lugged in right next to my keyboard I can't imagine there is a real chance of EMR giving you discernible information. If you're really that worried, another layer of electrical tape should fix you up.

That's still pretty interesting, I think.

I once saw a college presentation by a guy from Lockheed Martin about some of the technologies they worked on that involved this sort of stuff. It's possible, for example, to park a van full of the right kind of equipment outside a building and pick up anything being displayed on a CRT monitor/TV inside, because you can pick up the magnetic field generated by the monitor and decode it into an image. On the keyboard-eavesdropping side of things, there's apparently been a fair amount of success with statistical analysis of keyboard sounds - I'm not sure how much of it involved differentiating between the sounds various keystrokes made, and how much was calculating the average time between keypresses, but it was decently accurate for keylogging someone just by using a microphone. Combine this with a laser microphone (a microphone that bounces a laser off a hard surface to detect vibrations and translate them back into noise), and you can basically keylog someone from a quarter-mile away by shining a laser pointer into their window. Crazy stuff.

I think the chances of someone using this EMR analysis to swipe your credit card number or something are pretty low, but the technical concept is neat, and protecting against this sort of detection might be important for, say, government or corporate institutions that could be targeted for espionage.

Why would they watch it themselves? Once you have the data coming into software, you can process it however you want - for example, you might just let this thing sit in an Internet cafe for a while, soak up data, and have it email you any time it picks up on a 16-digit number.

The fact that 95% of what you or I do on a computer is worthless doesn't mean that it's necessarily hard to find the 5%.

I mean, dinner was going on just downstairs, and there we were with my wife making these incredible noises up above me, and I realized that she could only really, truly get off when she was on top of an amazingly expensive piece of furniture that she had just acquired.

  • That wired keyboard thing is crazy, if true. And I thought Van Eck phreaking was dead. There was a similar paper written on the fact that if you have a detector that reads the LED on a modem/ethernet card, it can actually catch and reproduce the binary data by reading the blinks. I don't remember what speed connection the research was done with, but I do remember it surprised me.

Isn't electrical tape designed to be an insulator? Anything designed for EM shielding is generally a conductor. Keyboard cables probably already have a layer of shielding, but it's likely too thin because it's to keep noise from getting in, not signal from getting out.
