  • I definitely preferred the original light saber battles.
  • I'm alright with the more fast pace battles. I'm less OK with the jumping 10 feeet in the air kind of stuff.

There's a scene in episode 1 where Obi Wan and Qui Jin use force speed, the same one they have in KOTOR, and travel down a long hall way in like 1 second. And then they never use that ability again for the rest of the movie. Man I just will never get over that crap.

I just wish that the entire franchise was run by a group of writers who actually could handle the SW universe competently, instead of a mad man.
  • Yeah, the transformation to Vader makes no sense. I get what they were going for, anger at the loss of his mother, turning to darker means to save his wife, but the flow of his emotions and the actual reactions of those emotions make no sense. He murders an entire village instead of just the people responsible and those who try and stop him. That would be bad, but not crazy. He looks into the Sith's because he fears the death of his wife, fine, but he doesn't actually do anything. He talks to a guy about it and that's it. Then he just believes everything that guy tells him and nothing his actual friends tell him because... Only Lucas knows. Yeah, Obi Wan would totally kill the mother of my children because I don't know I'm a fucking nutjob. He doesn't so much get seduced by the dark side as have some kind of manic episode for the rest of his life.

And yes, as fans have complained for years there's absolutely no reason why the originals aren't out there. At least it's lead to those impressive derestoration projects and whatnot. But I can't think of another popular film that has alternative cuts that you can't find the original of. No one wants to watch the theatrical cut of Blade Runner, but at least you can if you want some cultural context. Same goes for Brazil. Lucas is a crazy person. It is at the point where I'm actually wishing for a man to die just so whoever takes over will release the original films. I want that to be in the headline. Lucas found dead at Skywalker Ranch, Star Wars episodes IV through VI to be released on bluray in a restored, original cut format.
  • I want to watch the theatrical cut of Blade Runner. Just give us the fucking originals in HD and be done with it.

I thought the Theatrical Cut was on the Bluray version? I have the 6 disc Bluray version, I just haven't had the mood or time to sit down and watch them yet, and ive had them for... a year and a half now.

As for Star Wars, are we ever getting an Episode VII? I've heard that for years, but then again that would ruin whatever canon of the series has been made in the past 30 years with novels, books, comics, video games, etc. Id say if there was an Episode VII, it would have to include things like Luke getting married to Mara Jade and him starting the Jedi Academy. Yea, I am looking this up on Wiki.
  • It IS on the set. I'm saying Star Was should be the same way.
  • Jeremy has an appreciation of the theatrical cut of Blade Runner that borders on the perverse. (I know, I know; hello, Pot, my name is Kettle.) It is on the Bluray set, and the collected DVD set as well.

As I said on Facebook, at this point in my life, I'm actually glad for George Lucas and his constant tinkering. It gives me an excuse not to waste any more of my precious time and money on Star Wars.
  • I actually think all the versions of Blade Runner are a good movie, but I don't need or want CG fiddling with a thirty year old movie. Just let it be.
  • Yeah, that's why I prefer the quote-unquote Director's cut to the Final Cut.
  • ^^Amen, KN.
  • Any time I read something about Blade Runner someone inevitably talks about which cut is the best one. This has caused me to be very intimidated by the movie to the point that I've not seen it even though it is available on Netflix.
  • Well, the original trilogy took it's combat influences from classic samurai films, while the prequels took theirs from wushu. The prequel combat and Force use is flashier and more fun to watch, but the originals have more verisimilitude in their simplicity, so it's pretty much a matter of taste. Personally, I think the over-the-top saber combat worked better in the video games (except Force Unleashed, both because those games are awful and because combat/Force use gets elevated to truly retarded levels of OP). Plus this dissonance also brings up the question of how all Jedi could pull of all this twirly shit way back when but Luke can't in the originals; but I guess you can chalk that up to his not having gotten to that level yet and Yoda and the Emperor being old(er) farts.

As to Blade Runner, Director's Cut is the way to go for me. @Getter: Aside from the theatrical cut, which features Harrison Ford's bored to noir PI voice over, the differences between the others that I know of are negligible.
  • If I were to rank my preferences in terms of Asian action choreography, it would be kung fu > chanbara > > > > > > wuxia.
  • I actually think all the versions of Blade Runner are a good movie, but I don't need or want CG fiddling with a thirty year old movie. Just let it be.

There is no point in putting Blade Runner in CG or 3D to hit theaters again, because its the same movie where there is a total of 10 maybe-ish minutes of actual action and the rest seeing people being depressed working with Ridley Scott.
  • To be honest, the "flying" cars with visible wires was pretty dumb. I don't think there's anything wrong with getting rid of outright mistakes like that; we aren't talking "Greedo shoots first" here.
  • Eh, I found the changes made in the Final Cut inoffensive and I prefer it to the so-called Director's Cut (which took a slow movie and made it slower by muting the narration and not editing out the empty spots where the narration went) but I'd rather just watch the original movie.

Yes, the narration is kind of clumsy, but it is an imperfect movie and I love it, flaws and all. I still think bored narration kind of works for a character who is weary of life. Whatever, I love Blade Runner. The only real sticking point for me is the ending. I prefer the alternate ending that doesn't give you zomg happy ending, but here's the important part:

All versions of Blade Runner are good.
  • 'Tis true, 'tis true. And I was actually surprised to find that the voice over narration wasn't quite as awful as people make it out to be see when I saw it on TV.
  • I agree with both of you.
  • Why is the Rayman Origins Demo installed in my Steam library?
  • Did you feed it? You shouldn't feed it or it will never leave.
  • Steam won't let me delete it. What the fuck?
  • Just do what I do and have 228 games in your library. You'll never notice it again.
  • ^Is that actual dialogue? Because that is totally something Spidey would say, and I'd like to think the 90s series really was capable of good zingers like that every now and then (I love that show regardless).
  • 60s Spider-Man is a meme I never grow tired of.

Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Frank Miller and David Sim (pre-crazy), Steve Ditko (via recorded monologue), Art Spiegelman, and more interviewed on their work, and all introduced by Harlan Ellison. Thought people might be interested :T

PSH only 228? come on gezzer step it up. A real man has 397 and only plays tf2.
  • We can't all be you, Ex. You set an impossible standard.
  • I haven't even used Steam in months and I see I also have Rayman installed and unable to be removed.

I guess it's a good thing that I don't like PC games, because Steam seems like a splipperly slope where you'll give into any game that goes on sale.

I can't see Ex's because the website doesn't like number strings for the url I guess.
  • A bit late on the Star Wars discussion, but I found this to be somewhat interesting. Don't think I saw this posted anywhere in here...

  • Because it's been done before and better? RedLetterMedia dood.

I have not spent $3030 on Steam. Maybe $1000. Though I guess they wouldn't have a way to take sales into account.

  • I'm pretty sure the Rayman Origins Demo is a promotional thing that will disappear when the full game comes out.
  • A a couple acquaintances of mine have - at various game conventions - been playtesting rules for a wargame using Lego robots. They've had good reception and will be kickstarting it next Monday:
    Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack
  • That's pretty sweet.
  • Text to speech is never not fun.
  • Alfred E. Neuman is real.

  • This guy is fucking crazy ... If nothing else check out the shit he says around 9 minutes.

Part of a series of articles on the films of The Cage. This one argues it's the smartest dumb American action movie ever made.

Also, Graz, I think you will especially appreciate today's Penny Arcade.
  • Yeah I saw that and immediately thought of her. :D Though in the newspost Tycho says he's a fan of the comics, which I still think is pretty bad. Of course, the comics are more "not very good" and the show is more "actively awful."
  • Yeah, I tried the comics awhile back, and I just couldn't get into them. They're pretty much just as slow moving, and from what I hear go on to abandon even the already flimsy pretense of realism. Also Kirkman has stated he basically intends for it to go on forever, so at least they're honest about it being a big ol' cash cow.
  • All I ever hear is people bitching about that show. It's fucking terrible, just stop watching it. Really simple guys. You're just feeding the troll. Same as Lost and any other shows on TV that get lashed out at. Stop giving then ratings... I don't get this at all.
  • I know, I don't watch it. I've seen like two episodes piecemeal and stopped.

In other news on stupid things, Assassin's Creed 3 will take place during the American Revolution and the plot will inevitably be either just as or more retarded than it already is, as well as having to grapple with the issue of people actually having fucking guns now and just shanking guys will no longer cut it. Also the MC will be just as uninteresting as the other two. I can't say they're bad, because the gameplay from at least 2 onwards is pretty cool, but I wish people would realize how dumb the whole thing really is.
  • Eventually AC will make it to present time, at which point it'll be a tie in to Splinter Cell.
