On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness
  • I think there is an old thread on this, but I can't find it, I guess Dave will just have to ban me.

Why is this going to be so fucking expensive on Live, I was expecting the average 800 points. Is it just because they know nerds will pay that price (I certainly will) or is there something else here?
  • Well it's $20 for the PC as well, still seems expensive. Must be the nerd thing. Maybe it will drop in price in a month or so.
  • I know it's an unfair comparision and all, but all I can think is all the great games you can get on XBLA for 1300 points (or whatever $15 is), or hell, even 400-800 points. When I can go out and by Rez or SoTN for 10 dollars and Puzzle Quest for $15, I'm not so cool with buying an average-to-below-average-looking game that, knowing Penny Arcade, is probably only going to be funny 1/3 of the time.
  • Hell, I'd probably be better off buying 1600 points of Rock Band songs, but I won't.
  • It would be nice if they had a demo, to sway us into buying it.
  • Don't all of those Xbox Live Marketplace only games HAVE to have a demo? Or am I misremembering this?
  • I thought that game was going to survive on the presence of Penny Arcade alone? There are pretty sad people who'll buy it for that only.
  • [quote="karaokeninja"]Don't all of those Xbox Live Marketplace only games HAVE to have a demo? Or am I misremembering this?
Oh yea the trial. I forgot about that.
  • I'm a sucker for the kind of humor they're showing in the preview comic, so it may not be such a loss.

You had me at a bad pun about an ice cream stand.
  • Yeah, that's going to be the selling point for me. I love Tycho's writing style for some undefinable reason, and as my avatar on this forum may suggest, I prize good writing in games possibly to the exclusion of other features.
  • I gotta say, big ups to the Penny Arcade guys for banner ads. Well played, sirs.
  • Ok I'm playing the demo right now and I had to rake my freaking yard and.... Holy Shit a giant fruit fucker stepped on my house.

Edit: Well that was fun don't know if its really worth 20 bucks but ill probably get it anyways.
  • I've clocked in a lot of time, or what would be a lot of time for this I guess. I must say, it doesn't exactly pick up after the demo part, but for me that was no loss. the game makes me giggle every couple of minutes. I'm charmed by bad puns (engoosiasts) and birds singing in haikus. The gameplay isn't spectacular, but it's not disappointing. Trying to balance between blocking and setting up attacks keeps me interested. It comes off as a game that is good for Penny Arcade enthusiasts and everyone else will be a bit disappointed and will end up only thinking of other Arcade titles they could have purchased.

Actually, on the point of XBLA, I would recommend the PC if you've got something that will run games, I doubt it can be that taxing on a system. It definitely feels like it's much more suppose to be a point and click adventure when not in battle. More than a couple times I've had to re-run characters into an area in order to highlight the correct item. I have no idea how much gameplay can be changed in future games, but a bumper/trigger target changing systems would be fucking beautiful.

I was both happy and disappointed with character creation. When I was first making my character I was disappointed in my selection. Only being able to pick between three shirts is rather disappointing and I certainly can't stand to have a character who looks similar to a friends. I then became elated when I saw my character worked into a comic cutscene exactly as I had made him, but now in marvelous 2-D. I don't know they work my character into the game so that he looks as if he belongs, rather than never appearing in a 2-D cutscene or not being able to change expression, but I'm going to go ahead and give them the benefit of the doubt and say that it limited what they could do in character creation.

All in all it comes off as a game for "hardcore" Penny Arcade fans. If you think of Penny Arcade as being similar to all other gaming comics it's probably not for you, but if you're buying the books and shirts as I do then you'll probably enjoy it.
  • Well, I finally beat the game and I have to say I really enjoyed it. The writing is top-notch and the personalities are very well realized. Tycho throws many quips and dark poems forward and Gabe likes to beat the shit out of stuff, namely the devil and gods. The combat isn't great, but it keeps you engaged and the overkills are humorous, if a little too gory. I agree that the pricing is a little high for the title. Hopefully subsequent episodes are a little cheaper.
  • They even added some humor from the podcast with Tycho saying a big word and Gabe getting confused
  • I love Tycho's writing style for some undefinable reason,

It's because Tycho's a good writer? Certainly when it comes to the sort of pastiche and hyperbole he puts in the strips and posts. Moreover, when he turns in work that's sub-par, he knows it, and that puts him way above just about every webcomic author out there.

Steadying himself atop the speeding Lamborghini, the sorcelator drew his twin wands - Hurt and Burn. He was going to make damn sure the Pirate Assassins and their Metal Friends rued this day, and rued it hard.

Shh! You'll give away the secret!

    Yes.
  • I felt there wasn't enough of that word play, and agape seems rather common.
  • You know what else means open? "Open"!

I just finished the game, and the only compliant I have is that I have to play through the game again to mop up all the achievements I missed. Yeah, it was only about 9 hours of gameplay, and it was $20; but, most games that cost $60 don't have even 6 hours of interesting gameplay.
  • so episode 2 is out. Anyone played it? do you have to start from scratch or does your characters transfer over at the same level they where when you beat episode 1?
  • according to the trailer you can use your same character, but I dont know if you keep all the same stats and stuff.
  • You start off at a higher level than you would normally, and the name stays the same. It will put you back into character creation with your original template so you can modify it however you want again. You also get 1/2 of Div, though I don't know if you had to buy the item in the 1st game or just beat said 1st game and you get it anyway.

The second game is really fun. I accidentally misplaced several hours yesterday playing it. I thought I was on;y going to play it for an hour. Turns out it was more like five hours.
