The rumored cast actually had me perk up. DiCaprio as Kaneda and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo. Sure, it'll be weird and a mess, but it's a weird mess I'd be interested in seeing, unlike a Stephen Norrington movie, which we almost got.
I'm gonna say this is probably another "HAY GUYS THEYRE MAKING A MOVIE BASED ON X SHOW BUT NOT REALLY" thing until they really start filming. They've been talking about making an Akira movie for like, 50 years at this point.
Also, live action Sailor Moon is brilliant. Brilliant brilliant.
Otomo, how could you do this? [quote="Otomo Katsuhiro"]Sorry, I can’t hear you. I’m surrounded by piles of money.
Hopefully it’ll just idle in development hell forever. If they’re Americanizing it (neo-tokyo = new manhattan) then they’ll probably change the character names. And since Akira is a common Japanese name shouldn’t the American version be called “Larry” or something?
That Dragonball movie is getting made. . . it's 10 years too late and undoubtedly going to be a disaster, but it's getting made. G-Force and Astroboy, too, though they're CG, not live action. Could we technically count Speed Racer?
I know majority of these projects never get off the ground, but when properties like Akira come up as often as they do, eventually its going to happen. Look at Watchmen.
I feel like I'd die in the theater at the sight of the Live action Akira....Here's hoping it doesn't get made...Of course it's be better than a certain US movie based on a certain akira toriyama work... I agree with Chronocross on the Monster Movie, but I feel that 20th century boys would work better (Wasn't that announced a few years ago by new line Cinema?)
I'd personally like to see a live-action Claymore or Berserk...actually....*Shudders*
I managed to stay out of the Micheal Bay Transformers, so I probably won't end up seeing the live action Akira (assuming it takes a turn for the lame).
I'm wary of this, but going to go see it just like everybody else here probably. DiCaprio isn't a bad actor or anything. On the contrary, from what I've seen of him he's pretty good. but I really don't see him as a convincing Kaneda. He doesn't have the right look. That Jason Gordon Levitt dude I don't know crap about, but he looks like a passable Tetsuo. To be anywhere close to the quality of the original its going to need a really talented writer to adapt it and a colossal budget.
"Neo Manhattan"... wow. Already feeling uneasy about this.
I'm currently reading through the manga for the first time and it's astonishing how much better it is in comparrison to the film. I still don't understand why Hollywood would want to adapt Akira.
Money isn't a sufficient motivator in this case, since these adaptations have a consistent pattern of tanking hard at the box office. I think creative bankruptcy must also be taken into consideration as a factor.
From what i understand, the two movies are gonna be based of the manga, which the manga goes well into the story than the anime did.
Im currently on the 4th volume right now, but the first 3 books are really amazing to read. All i ask if they take the major parts out of the first 3 books into like a 2 and a half hour movie and use the manga as a screenplay kinda like how Watchman was done (which from what I read really did come from the comic or most of it).
I guess as long as its more faithful to the manga than the anime, its gonna be really good if they keep it that way, thats kinda how I look at it for this movie.
You know they're Americanizing it, right? And that it's supposed to be set in New York? Given that the location of the story (ie: Neo-Tokyo) is even more important in the manga than the film I don't have much hope even if it is based on the manga.

I finished up Akira last week and it fantastic. Anyone who hasn't read it before, definitely needs to check it out.
The Zac Effron/Kaneda thing was debunked or something.
I'd just hope that they take the core elements of the film (Kaneda, Tetsuo, mutant psychi children, the Colonel, SOL, post-apocalypse) and make their film be inspired by the anime and manga. I hope they don't even all it Akira
Why would they change any of the names? Does it still take place in Neo Tokyo? Is it still named Akira? Why would having a main character named Tetsuo be a larger barrier than either of these two things? Boo, I say, boo.
