  • My EPIC gaming schedule is thus:

    4/17 - 4/21: Okami (Wii, missed the PS2 version)
    4/21 - 4/29: Metal Gear Online Beta
    4/29 - 5/12: GTA4
    5/12 - 6/1: MGS4

See you in July, when I come out of my cave having realized the shadows on the wall were not illusions, but GOD in the form of videogames.
  • 2. So this is the RE where they took backtracking and campyness to a new level of shame. Before this point they were slightly cheesy, but introducing the super-annoying Steve Burnside and the incestuous psychopath twin brother and sister was way over the top. Unforgivable!

New levels of shame? If you take away backtracking and campyness from RE, what's left? Over the top? RE2 had a crazy police chief who killed the mayor's daughter and wanted to stuff her like a trophy buck, right?

I have friends who hated RE:CV, but they played it fairly recently, as opposed to when it came out. In the context of RE 1 and 2, Code Veronica followed the formula, and improved on graphics and fleshed out a more elaborate story. I think it's inferior to RE2, but my friends were comparing it in their minds to the Gamecube RE Remake and RE: Zero, which are games that have had a lot more time to improve on the formula.
  • Your friends are wrong. CV is awesome, not the least in part thanks to the triumphant return of Chris Redfield and his BAG O' GUNS.
  • Chris Redfield climbing that cliff taught me what it means to be a man.
  • UFO Alien Invasion. It's like episodic content done kind of right.
  • [quote="The Joel"]Chris Redfield climbing that cliff taught me what it means to be a man.

I don't even like old RE games. I prefer to watch them played, but this sounds like something I'll be going back and playing.
  • I'm with Dave on this one. Stop hating, Code Veronica Haters :x :x :x

Also I'm playing Cave Story for what must the be 50 billionth time.
  • [quote="MitchyD"][quote="The Joel"]Chris Redfield climbing that cliff taught me what it means to be a man.

I agree. I like to watch other people play it. Saves me the frustration from my total lack of skillz. Also it is amusing to see Dave break shit from game mishaps.
  • Unlimited SaGa and Chrome Hounds in my tour de games that hate you playing them, Godhand, and I'll need to search out a new old (!) shoot 'em up to scrape at for the bloggery. Watching my wife play Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 Flavour.
  • [quote="Spankminister"]New levels of shame? If you take away backtracking and campyness from RE, what's left? Over the top? RE2 had a crazy police chief who killed the mayor's daughter and wanted to stuff her like a trophy buck, right?

But at least that was downright CREEPY. Explain to me what's creepy about a maniacal cross-dressing uber-rich aryan who flies harriers around. I remember Code Veronica being great, but going through it again the difference between RE2 and CV is jarring. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed CV, and it's still alot more fun than some recent current-gen games (Dark Sector, Army of Two) but where the previous games leaned towards scary, CV leans towards ridiculous comedy.

    So just for fun:
    1. REmake
    2. RE2
    3. RE4
    4. RE3
    5. RE0
    6. Code Veronica

I was re-playing CV over the weekend in favor of Okami, so even last on that list is not a big slight.
  • Ouch, Code Veronica below even Zero? You got no love there, bro. :(
  • It's not that, I just think RE0 is pretty underrated. I didn't like it at the time, but it's tougher than the REmake, there are a ton more zombies, and it's got killer graphics. CV just don't hold up in comparison. But the T-Virus leech priest is about equal a lame villain as Alfred Ashford.

Oh snap: A port of Resident Evil Zero was recently announced for the Wii, releasing Summer 2008.
  • Yo speaking of horror games, is Siren worth playing?
  • I understand your list, but RE3 belongs firmly at the bottom of it.

I also kind of liked Zero aside from Leech Zombie Jesus, who was pretty lame, I'll admit. Also, it suffered from the "Hey, look who ELSE also invented the T-virus!" The partner game mechanic, the fact that it started on a speeding train in a rainstorm, and the other mansion really set a great atmosphere, I think. Also, Billy was so much better than Rebecca, it gave rise to the phrase, "Get back in the kitchen and mix me up some herbs, woman!" between my friends and I.
  • I'm playing I wanna be the guy. Its equal amounts frustrating and awesome. I haven't managed to clear the second screen
  • [quote="David D."]Yo speaking of horror games, is Siren worth playing?

    Not even a little bit.

[quote="Spankminister"]I understand your list, but RE3 belongs firmly at the bottom of it.

Whaaaaat? What are you smoking? For fun-factor, the only thing that beats RE3 is RE4, and I don't know if I should even count that because it's such a different game. There's tons upon tons of awesome guns, Nemesis is totally sweet, and it has Mikhail! I guess everyone's entitled to their opinions, but dang. Logic dictates that RE2 is the best one, but my emotions choose RE3 as their favorite.

Also, Billy was so much better than Rebecca, it gave rise to the phrase, "Get back in the kitchen and mix me up some herbs, woman!" between my friends and I.

Unfortunately, Rebecca's partner AI was so awful as to be unusable, pretty much requiring you to play her at all times because Billy, unlike her, WOULD ACTUALLY FIRE HIS GUN.
  • Yeah, I noticed that. lol. I'd be Billy with a shotgun, and a zombie would be shambling up, and I'd be like 'Oh, I'll just let Rebecca take it out, she's got the pistol.' Rebecca? Any time now...Rebecca!? DAMMIT REBECCA!
  • Oblivion. I know the AI is horrible, but I just get a kick out of robbing people blind in their sleep for some reason. 8)
  • [quote="blakout"]I'm playing I wanna be the guy. Its equal amounts frustrating and awesome. I haven't managed to clear the second screen
It gets really fun once you start fighting the bosses. The SOTN spoof intro before the fight with Dracula is hilarious.
  • Metal Gear for the NES is fucking unfair :x :x :x :x
  • Currently playing:
Super Robot Wars Alpha - I don't know Japanese, and my only working PS1 is an emulator, and apparently I have to switch emulators for a few spots to get around some emulator-crashing bugs. However, powering up Mazinger Z to the point that he can fight Angels is totally worth it. Also the lack of a midi rendition of "Information High" is disappointing.

Master of Orion II - Not much needs to be said about this

Puzzle Quest - I actually haven't touched this in like 2 weeks because of the two previously mentioned games, but I'm technically still playing it.

And last night, I finally tried out X-Com. It seems pretty cool, but whether or not I can get into it will be determined by if I can get over the insane learning curve.
  • I found Shinobi and Kunoichi (Nightshade) in the clearance bin for $8 and $4 respectively in Japan. Shinobi's the clearly better game, but I'd basically beaten my friend's copy. I was pleasantly surprised by Hibana's voice in Kunoichi-- her voice is more of the deeper commando Major Kusanagi type than the airheaded anime bimbo Dead or Alive type.

    Example.

Also, Phoenix Wright 3 is in the DS, and Mahjong Fight Club in the PSP. Just beat PW2, which was basically disappointing except for the last case.

Unfortunately, Rebecca's partner AI was so awful as to be unusable, pretty much requiring you to play her at all times because Billy, unlike her, WOULD ACTUALLY FIRE HIS GUN.

I played through the entire game as Billy because once I got used to his crazy constitution, I'd get sloppy dodging monsters. And if you try that shit with Rebecca, what amounts to a slight scratch for Billy would just kill her outright, which got even more frustrating for me than her AI.

[quote="Dave"]Whaaaaat? What are you smoking? For fun-factor, the only thing that beats RE3 is RE4, and I don't know if I should even count that because it's such a different game.

I really liked the moodiness and atmosphere of RE2 above everything, and RE3 didn't really go in that direction. I thought the addition of more weapons and the constant appearance of Nemesis got too far away from the appeal of having only crappy guns and being completely anal over every handgun bullet you used. I think that all the Resident Evils are good, and which one you like best is more a litmus test about your individual tastes and experience with video games than a measure of the game's quality, I think.

Just take these kids today with their crazy rock and roll music, and their Resident Evil 4...
  • Beat Condemned 2 last night. Started great, devolved into generic sci-fi/shooter crap. Why do developers constantly feel the need to take things to some extreme supernatural? I guess I know the answer, but this game was at it's best early on, when crazed hobos are jumping through abandoned warehouses and all you've got is a steel pipe. Getting the automatic rifle, diffusing bombs and shooting government agents was too much Rainbow Six for me.

I wish I was playing Age of Conan, but my PC sucks. I have a whole weekend of nothing to play. Wonderful. I never did finish Wild Arms. Gah.
  • Ninja Gaiden 2.
I forgot to blink for half an hour. My eyes really hurt.
  • Ninja Gaiden 2 and holy shit its fucking great.
  • Man eff you guys.

Gamefly took so long to register my return of a game that Ninja Gaiden went from "AVAILABLE NOW!1!1!!" to "Fuck you if you ever think you're going to get this game." I'm considering buying it, but I've been trying to be money conscious. :(
  • im playing indiana jones right now, its alright.

Dave, alittle trick to get the new releases on gamefly, make sure you have an open slot way in advance and remove all other games from your queue. That way, when the game switches to "Available", it will ship it.
  • Age of Conan. And I suspect it will occupy a good deal of my gaming time this summer. Its been great so far.
  • Currently attempting to play Silent Hill 2 alone (not going well) and have bought The World Ends With You.
It seems pretty good so far, I think its the only game on the DS I play with the volume up (other than Elite beat agents). I like the battle system too, getting to grips with the multi-tasking is difficult but I reckon with practise it'll get better.
  • Just started playing Front Mission 2089: Border of Madness. So far not to bad
  • Cooking for fiends...

Really though, Ninja Gaiden 2. Ryu should really become a food processor.

Anyone else hear it called "Ninja Gaiden I-I" (Aye-aye)?
  • No, because I KILL anyone who considers saying it that way.
  • [quote="Hippi3"]Cooking for fiends...

Where has it been called this? In official reviews or the general public?
  • Playing Killer7 apparently.
  • Are they quoting Mystery Science Theater's Master Ninja II episode when they called it Master Ninja "Eye Eye"? That's the only way that's acceptable.
  • [quote="karaokeninja"]Are they quoting Mystery Science Theater's Master Ninja II episode when they called it Master Ninja "Eye Eye"? That's the only way that's acceptable.

Do you really think the majority of people that are playing/talking about Ninja Gaiden would be cool enough to make that reference?
  • I just hope the last boss is Timothy Van Patten, and Ryu becomes the disciple of the TRUE master ninja... Lee Van Cleef.

Oh, and I just started playing Yakuza. This definitely exudes the "honorable yakuza" air. I'm still at the very beginning, so I guess it could change, but this game avoids sandbox syndrome by being an unabashedly linear cattle run. And you know what? With gameplay that's so similar to a beat-em-up, I am 100% for it.

At one point they start talking some shit about the power of dragon tattoos, that's when you know they're REALLY into it.

Still, I really loved that game. The combat system could've been better, but years of truly awful beat 'em ups makes it shine out like a beacon of hope. Plus, I got into the story. It gets pretty awful, but not really until the last few minutes. I'm willing to give it a little breathing room.

    Can't wait for Yakuza 2!
  • I just purchased Front Mission 3.
I also just borrowed Lunar 1 and 2 from a friend that is going to be gone all summer.

I'll probably start playing the Lunar's first.
  • Between replaying Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, finishing Super Robot Taisen MX Portable, and testing out Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, I'm counting the days till Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and Final Fantasy 4 for DS.
  • Can't wait for Yakuza 2!

I'm surprised you didn't mention the cutscenes, though... I'm 1.5 hours in, and I feel like I've actually had control for about 5 minutes of it. I haven't played Shenmue or MGS in a while, so it might be lack of perspective, but I'm starting to get antsy.

The game itself doesn't have the best graphics, and it seems like a really linear "go here, do X, it's highlighted on your radar," but the feel of the thing really redeems it. Does anyone else know what I mean? How the weapons feel and sound in a game go a long way, whether it's an FPS or whatever. The visual and audio experience really makes it entertaining to play even when you're just punching and kicking thugs into a wall, then slamming their head into a table.
  • I just started playing Ninja Gaiden 2. It is still fun and still punishes you for being stupid.
  • Shenmue didn't really have a lot of long cutscenes. It did have frequent short cutscenes and lots of those quick time event things where you had to hit the right color button.
  • Since my 360 is out of commision I fired up the PS2. I should be finishing ZOE2, but instead I've gone back to Gungrave: Overdose. That game is crazy fun.
  • Right now, Im playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2. It's a good game, tho it's pretty different from the original FFTA. But, the majority is the same, so I can't complain.
  • The last thing I played today was a round of Columns on the Genesis.
  • [quote="mattytehhax0r"]Right now, Im playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2. It's a good game, tho it's pretty different from the original FFTA. But, the majority is the same, so I can't complain.

does it still have the totally retarded Judge system in it?
  • Baldur's Gate 2. While making my character this time I kept a calculator with me and tried to get the most stat points to spend possible. Took me like 30 minutes, but I ended up with 18 Str, 18 Dex, 16 Con, 10 Int, 10 Wis, and 18 Cha on my Swashbuckler. Not the absolute highest scores possible, but pretty damn good.

Also playing me some Age of Conan. Also a good game. Sort of waiting for the big PVP patch due before July to really get into it though.
  • Playing GTA4 at the moment.

it's pretty fun, also rock band
