I live in Canada, I'm 15, I like the anime and the manga, I came to this forum through the podcast (incidentally I came to Fast Karate through AWO, which was the first podcast I ever listened to). Some of you might know me from posts on the Anime Jump forums (I'm Mr.X there)
I like giant robots, exploding heads and manliness. But I also like a lot of shows people here hate (no, not the moe, other stuff, EVA stuff).
In short, I have shizophrenic and self-contradictory tastes and make no apologies about it. -

I really like the way that you guys go in depth with the stuff you review and dissect it from different angles (i.e it's cinematography, the way it's written). I guess you can do that when you have a degree in film. It's different from even the podcasts I like. Fast Karate is, despite it's awesomeness, mostly a comedy podcast about anime and video games rather than anything else and as much as I love AWO they mostly review the shows from an angle of how entertaining the show is (not saying that's bad or anything) and throw in neat trivia and jokes. Your thing is a different experience, which is equally as good.

I agree with not having to justify your tastes to nerds on the internet. Different people have different tastes, and that's all good. Once we've established that we're all dorky enough to watch Japanese cartoons, what's the point in trying to appear cool in front of the other dorks? Just be into whatever you're into, and wear it on your sleeve. Check out this thread for examples. -

Eva seems to get a backlash of hate. For so long everyone was calling it the end all be all of animes. Then everyone came to their sense and realized it wasn't the second coming of Astroboy, and went in the exact opposite direction and hated it. There's also the problem of over saturation, hearing about it all the time and it just gets old. I'd never say the show doesn't have problems out the wazoo, but it's still a pretty solid show and I enjoy it.
I think Akira gets a similar problem (not to put the two on the same level) and I'd put money on Cowboy Bebop having the same problem in about three or four years. -
The thing about EVA is that is was good for its time. I will say it I liked the original ending, I did not get the rebith and the other movie. I am hoping for other animes to be made such as 20th Century Boys or Pluto (now that would be a partial second coming of Astroboy)

My distaste for Eva has little to do with the "OMG LOVE WAIT NO I HATE IT" thing. I don't like it for the same reasons I don't like French new wave films. They are really poorly written and use all kinds of vague, gibberish symbolism to try to seem smart. While I applaud trying out new takes on tired genres (such as the giant robot/or kaiju story), I cannot approve of what is essentially trying to apply snooty artier-than-thou French filmmaking to giant robots/monsters.

I always took the over-the-top arthouse bullshit in Eva to be tongue-in-cheek, which is why I like it. Basically, Eva is an innovative yet merely decent super robot show, but one of the best pretentious drama anime. Admit it, there are a lot of dramatic, character-driven anime, most of which are not as good as Eva.
Here's how I break that down to a single thought: Eva is the Japanese equivalent of The Matrix. It's enjoyable, well-crafted pulp that appears incredibly deep and smart to morons.
I'm still going to watch both Petit-Eva and Rebuild of Eva later this year.

Yeah, that's true. I think that one's tolerance/like of EVA hinges highly on your tolerance for bullshit artiness. I have an incredibly high tolerance for that so I sorta like EVA. -
