What Are You Watching / Listening Right Now ?
  • This is song is also good.

  • New Cohen album out today. I may have been listening to it for the last few days through nefarious means, but I bought it today, is totally ok in my book. I'm definitely digging it, but it probably won't appeal to everyone on the forums. Anyway, check out this song, and if you like it, then check out the rest of the album.
  • The Thing (2011)

Wow...fucking bad. That's not fanboy me talking here either, there are moments when I really tried to defend it. I really enjoyed the homages to scenes in the Carpenter version but that's about it. The CG was pretty bad and the monster was way too in your face and well lit. I don't understand how/why a science facility in the middle of Antarctica would have such large windows. Seems like a problem waiting to happen to me. I watched it mainly to sate my curiosity on how they would be able to make me care about a story I knew every detail of. 2 hours to flesh out a story I was told all the major points of in about 5 minutes, 30 years ago. They didn't do it by fleshing out characters I cared about that's for sure. Only got a handful of characters to hate and mistrust with some added non-english speakers to make a body count.
  • Are the windows septuple-pane? Seems like an insulation nightmare.
  • Just started 2nd series of An Idiot Abroad (things to do before you die).

Now, it might be predictable (eg. KP wants to do A, which sounds harmless, but Ricky & Steve send him via B and C, dangerous adventures), however, it is still so funny.
  • Are the windows septuple-pane? Seems like an insulation nightmare.

    Yes.
  • The Thing is probably my favorite horror movie, and easily my favorite John Carpenter movie. Why they felt the need to go back and make a terrible prequel will forever astound me.
  • I saw that one a few weeks ago. It is pretty bad, but I didn't really expect much of it, so the impact was lessened. I also don't really think much of the '82 one and have only seen pieces of the '51 one, so I also didn't have anything to build up expectations which also helped.
  • Watched the first few episodes of the ABC drama "Revenge." I actually sort of like it. They obviously took inspiration from the Count of Monte Cristo, it's just set in the Hamptons. Basically, the main girl's dad was framed for treason and money laundering, dies in prison, leaves her his journals and heap of money, asking her to forgive the people who wronged him, she trains herself up and creates a new identity, and goes back to the Hamptons 10 years later posing as an orphaned heiress, unrecognized by the people who knew her when she was a little kid. The writing and acting are okay, a little campy, but the parallels I found myself drawing were a Bruce Wayne who doesn't need to put on a mask to destroy his villains, and an undercover cop drama as she's trying not to get consumed by the fake identity. Not A-list TV, but better than I expected from ABC, and certainly more unique.

The first few moments of the show are presumably the last part of the season finale, so you know that shit will hit the fan, and the season itself is the sort of tragedy as the characters eventually arrive there. Hopefully, and the way it's going so far, is that the focus will not be on whether or not she's cold enough to ruin these assholes' lives (she seems to be), but the toll it takes on her to actually go through with what she's planned to do.
  • I just watched the last episode of Breaking Bad season 4, and Walter White is
    Spoiler:
    definitely the villain.
  • I'm a little surprised it took until the end of that season for you to decide that.
  • The main girl in Revenge sure can act with her eyes. One minute harmless puppy eyes, the next ice cold evil eyes.
  • Watching FMA: Brotherhood. Marathoned it up episode 21 over the weekend and still going. I'm liking it so far despite the uneven nature of it and some recent weak unnecessary characters. I'm just happy seeing the story told at a nice quick pace without any lulls or filler. It just an addictive show to breeze through.

I got Name of The Wind as a Christmas present.
A big thanks to The Book Club
  • I recently just finished FMAB myself and thought the complete opposite. I hated how important events were always zipped past a too fast a speed like a certain character's death so they aren't given proper weight for how serious the show wants them to be.

I do agree about many of the side characters being uninteresting. It also has a real tone shifting problem where serious moments have these awkwardly inserted comedy things where the characters go sort of SD, I guess it would be. The animation gets pretty lazy a lot. I lost track of how many times characters walked down a CG hallway/alleyway/street/ground outside, and that's not counting the errors or things drawn in a way that makes no sense. Also, pretty much all the fights that don't involve Bradley in some way are pretty lame. I didn't really care for that show very much I suppose.
  • Watched Portlandia on Netflix last night and was actually pleasantly surprised I went into it quite skeptical, but came out of it quite satisfied.

Also I don't know if it is just me but I feel like the last 2 seasons of South Park have been on a sharp decline on how funny and enjoyable it is.

    That's True

I can agree with you on how some major events and character deaths aren't given proper time to settle in due to the quick pacing. That makes it hard to truly resonate with the characters during times of despair or joy. And yeah, a good majority of the show comes off uneven with too much repetitive wacky comic relief popping up during serious moments or highly dramatic episodes.

It's kind of annoying but I just look past it. To me, the series overall has a good number of cons, but the pros such as the setting, plot, themes, and characters outweigh them in my mind. As for the animation quality and art, I have no idea what you're talking. Maybe your standards are much higher than mine, seeing as how I find myself constantly impressed by the fluidity and detail of the fight scenes and general action.
  • I am being extraordinarily picky about the animation thing, and it's just a standard that I've adopted that I know isn't really normal. I'll just leave it at that yes, FMAB definitely is better than your standard level of stuff. Also, I'm basing this largely on the end of the series because I had a large break between the stuff on Netflix and finally finishing it, so I don't really remember exactly where you are.
  • Oh ok, I see. I'm only up to episode 25 so far.
  • I looked it up, so I know where you are now. The fight between Greed and Bradley was one of the ones I thought was really good. I don't know if you've seen Envy's true form yet, but it disappointed me because of how poorly it flowed and meshed with everything around it.
  • I saw The Grey. It's pretty much perfect.

  • Perfect in what sense, exactly?
  • I'm watching an old taped round where Loyola was debating Northwestern BK. The 1AC was hilarious since they they went for three off cases with their 3NR

I want to say it has no faults, because I can not think of a single way that movie could have been better. I haven't had a better movie experience in years.

  • Huh, you're not the first person I've heard sing that movie's praises, which has taken me somewhat by surprise; think I'll have to go check it out.
  • I've gotta go against God on this one. Was really disappointed by The Grey. I'd go into details but I don't want to spoil anything.
  • That's what I've been hearing in the hour or so since I learned from that post that The Grey was a thing. Generally good praise with a couple of dissenters, though one of those mentioned something that made me want to see it movie despite his unfavorable opinion.

Also, that is the first Japanese music video I've ever seen that isn't just the singer/band performing in front of a camera possibly with varying environments.
  • From who I know it's fairly split. I admit I may have gone in with the wrong expectations, but after talking with others it seems they had the same expectations and either enjoyed it in spite of them or, like me, were simply let down.
  • Jedi master vs pack of wolves... what could go wrong?
  • Trying to start Hero Tales on Netflix but after 3 episodes don't know if I want to commit, can't get over how much like FMA it is. I am sure there are similar dubs that overlap as well.
  • It's not surprising it's FMA like, being more Hiromu Arakawa. I'm just curious, in what ways are they similar?
  • Watching 'From Paris With Love'. I'm liking it so far.
  • Awesome movie. I just finished watching Escape from New York.
  • Just saw Drive. I loved it.
  • Explain this to me.
  • I love understatement and good cinematography.

    Edit:

I'm also a sucker for melancholy stories.

  • This works oddly well.
  • Kinda mixed about 'From Paris with Love'.
    SPOILERS!
I really enjoyed it until you find out the fiance is a Muslim terrorist. Also why the fuck are they trying to blow up an AIDS summit? And the whole 'I just shot my fiance in the face a minute ago, lets joke around and play a game of chess' defiantly rubbed me the wrong way. I loved Travolta though.

I'm also working on a theory that Nick Cage and John Travolta can be used interchangeably in a movie and it would be just as good.
  • Don't worry about reasons in From Paris, just enjoy the ride, and now that his fiance is gone he can get with the man he has grown to love.

Theory? I think you mean "Face/Off"
  • the masterpiece 'Face/Off' just helps prove it. While watching From Paris I keep trying to imagine The Cage as Travolta's character and i think it would have worked.

Also i rolled my eyes at the 'Royale with cheese' joke.

  • I dig this song, even if it is skrillex
  • Sadly, watching this...

Nice, I was super excited to see Drive, but missed it in theaters. Ryan Gosling was pulling a really Le Samourai era Alain Delon look. In fact, I recall reading an article saying that was the sort of homage they wanted to make to that genre of noir, I can't wait to check it out.
  • This makes me inconceivably happy
