What Are You Watching / Listening Right Now ?
  • I love Nubajes =(
  • Why don't you marry him then?
  • ('coz he's dead)
  • First time I've actively heard Santigold, usually it's been put on by others. It stands up to scrutiny.

In keeping with the motorcycle I saw in there, let me present to you: Twin Shadow. This is the music video of the first song on his sophomore album, Confess, and I think he's released a few singles as well.

    ...
    ...
    ...

You've all watched it now, yes? George Lewis Jr., the lead band member and guy on the opening bike, based the series of videos on an unpublished post-apocalyptic biker novel he's been working on. As cool as that sounds, I'm glad he's chosen to craft music as well.

I can tell your minds are blown, and I don't want to start shit, but I just need to put it out there that 3:51 beats Oppam Gangam Style's ass every day of the week.

Edit: I have no idea how to embed a video

  • Nope, still doesn't work, second try :c

Edit: YOU JUST COPY PASTE THE LINK?!?! NO FUCKIN WAY MAN, NO FUCKIN WAY.

  • I understand the error of my ways. I lay prostrate before you
  • This band is worth checking out.
  • This isn't a necessarily recent watch, but I would like to recommend it nonetheless. I watched a movie on Netflix several months ago by the name of "Troll Hunters". It is a Swedish film, which definitely shows in how... quiet, I suppose I'd say it is. There is not a lot of music playing, just people talking and the sounds of what's around them. But I found it very entertaining in spite of the feeling that I was watching something happen from behind a bush as opposed to a controlled movie-viewing environment, and in some ways enjoyed that feeling better. I am awful at plot synopsis but here it goes (you can always wiki it instead if you want to hear how it goes a lot more succinctly and accurately).

It follows a group a teenagers/young adults who are doing a film about something or other, when they come hear of an extremely odd older gentleman. Thinking he has to do with what they were originally filming, they tail him for a while to interview him. When they finally get a chance to ask him questions, he is very dodgy, and leaves them wondering about even more than before they spoke. He leaves his house very late at night, every couple of days or weeks, to go somewhere. The kids follow him to his destination the next time he disappears, and become tangled in the happenings of a very dangerous outing.

Man, my friends were just talking about this last night, now I have to watch it.

but Fifth Element was just added to Netflix T-T

  • love troll hunters that ending made me go what? I'm still confused if that whole movie was a big troll attempt

really like this modal soul album i listen to the entire thing at least once or twice a week besides a few select songs

  • Watched Drive. I.... did not like it very much. :/
  • Even though they're not thematically related, if you didn't like a History of Violence then probably you won't like Drive too much.

They're similarly slow burn movies with awesome short action sequences.

Also, watched Smokin Aces 2 and I don't know what Paul is waiting for. It has live exploding clown ammunition, need I say more.
  • I am going to re-enter the anime world by resuming cowboy bebop. Assuming I can find the episodes as they were on a long dead hard drive.

Also, while I'm posting; recently been listening to Lana Del Rey.
  • I've been hanging out at the ADTRW, the Something Awful anime board, recently. They have a wiki, just like a lot of the SA boards, that has information on this and that series along with some write-ups by members. One day, I'm jamming the "Random" button and land on the page for Kanon, the KyoAni anime of a Key visual novel. Uguu~, in a word. It has five opinion notes on it. Three of those note crying, two from the writers and one telling you that you will cry, and they all talk about how funny it is. Now, if you're like me and stupid, you'll take this as a form of personal challenge. So, I took it up and am watching Kanon. To completion.

It's been a while since I've watched a moe show, but I don't remember them being this disgusting. Not only do all the main girls have their own little cute noise (Uguu~, Aouu~, Nyaa~), and except maybe the childhood friend girl who actually seems to exist beyond the main character if just a little, they're all fucking atrocious. The mainest of main girls, Ayu, is either 15 or 16 and doesn't know what a cell phone is or what a landlord is. The first interaction she has with the main character is him dragging her back to a food stand because she stole something while she whines and cries like a fucking five year old. There are at least two other girls with amnesia, which the other character notes because if you point out that there's a writing problem, it's the same as fixing it. The main character's sarcasm, think Kyon from Haruhi but less scathing, is somewhat helping, but it's like holding a piece of paper above your head to keep from getting wet in a storm.

    Four down, twenty to go.
  • I subjected myself to the original series years ago, which was shorter but didn't have the sarcastic main character to carry it. I'll say this, there's at least a few Major Plot Twist reasons that explain the inanity of some of the characters, but I don't remember exactly what they are because A. the show was bad and not memorable, and B. they're still approximately on the order of "she's an elf, so she's actually like 200 years old even though she looks like she's 13! so it's okay!" - i.e. the plot twist exists in order to give them an excuse to write stupid crap.
  • My problem, above and beyond the obvious "13 year old girl issue", is always "how could something that's been alive for 200 years be that stupid?"
  • Wasn't the original done by Toei? I've seen screen caps, and fuck me is that some bad art. To KyoAni's credit, the flow of movement, coloring, and environments are all done very well. But, you know, bug eyes, so it's half-and-half.

Oddly, I think I figured out the trick to this show. If you pretend that the main character is not a high school student but instead a counselor/teacher at a grade school, his interactions with the girls become a lot more palatable. All his interactions with them seem to be about getting to the bottom of their personal issues or trying to better them in some way like an anime teacher is to students. You just have to ignore all the flashbacks to him being a kid with them, and that he's a student. And that this is based on a visual novel with sex scenes, so no matter how you look at it, the underlying goal is always getting laid. So, yeah, if you completely delude yourself, Kanon is not the anime equivalent of being punched in the balls. By Kenshiro.
  • Started rematching the first season of True Blood. I'm like 5 episodes in and disappointing by how long it takes for Alexander Skarsgård to become a regular cast member.
  • Speaking of genesis.... NSFWish.
  • This sounds like its being sung by a serial killer.
  • It sounds like it's being sung by Tonetta.
  • HAHAHAHA

  • I'm about 10 episodes into Kaiji right now, and I love it. I just finished watching G.A. Geijutsuka Art Design Class (looooong name) which was a slice of life style anime about cute girls and art, and going from that anime to a gritty, thick-lined show with sadness, gambling and manly sad men somehow made it even cooler. I watched 6 episodes in a row because I simply couldn't put it down, the suspense had me hooked big time. I recommend this anime at a 7 or 8 out of 10, and I think Dave and Joel would possibly like it as well, if they haven't already seen it. Even if you don't watch the anime, at least look up the OP and ED on youtube or something; they are pleasant to listen to, and have neat imagery, in my opinion.
  • After your done with both seasons of Kaiji you should really watch Akagi.
  • So to my surprise I discovered yesterday that my library had a Hong Kong DVD release of John Woo's Bullet In The Head, and I just finished watching it. Holy shit. I was not prepared in the least for that. I figured it'd be another John Woo action joint; I did not expect a Shakespearean tragedy that's heist movie, Vietnam war movie, and Treasure of the Sierra Madre all at aonce. That POW camp sequence was horrible and harrowing in a way I didn't even know Woo was capapble of; I've come to admire him even more after seeing this movie. It was an experience, lemme tell you that.

I love the Akagi opening song.

    NANTOKANAREEEEEEEEE*BOOM*
  • That is a pretty good song.
  • Yes it is!
  • I'm more partial to the ending by Maximum the Hormone.

  • SPEAKING OF MAXIMUM THE HORMONE

And as for the discussion on the shitty version of Gangam Style, there's a lot to be said about why it's bad past the fact that the girl sounds like shit. They took all the energy out of it. The dances are shittier and blander, there's no elevator pelvic thrusting, no yelling at a chick's ass, and generally no reason for the remix to even exist. And speaking of energy, I've watched a ton of Maximum the hormone music video's and still have next to no idea what the singer without an instrument looks like, and man is that bass player metal as fuck.
  • Overly energetic singer, distant bass player, eccentric guitarist and peppy girl drummer. Perfect band. The fact their sound drifts from punk to metal just adds to that.
  • It's been a while since we've had a MAXIMUM train.

  • A main part in my recently trying to learn the bass is so I can some day play the bass solo in this.

I really had a good time prodding Dave into singing that during Karaoke. So worth it.
  • My throat hurts just thinking about it.

Also I'm sick so my throat hurts from that.
  • Worth it.
  • Saw the new Conan and with all that production value they couldn't put more action in the movie, truly disappointed.
  • My wife and I just finished Teen Wolf Season 2, and that show is a lot better than it has any right to be. There are quite a few cheesy moments in the show, but each character, good or evil, is written in an empathetic way. Even the sociopaths have moments of vulnerability that make them interesting.
  • Watched "The Raid" in anticipation of Paul's next podcast and the fights scenes were really good but I think I watched the trailer too many times and was expecting too much. The music was really great though all the way through.
  • Watching the Newsroom a new HBO series and I think it has the most intelligent, intriguing and bestest writing in the world. Amazing show if you like anything about political drama you definitely have to check this show out. Jeff Daniels plays an amazing edgy asshole and Olivia Munn is the sexiest woman. period. PeRiOd.

Also finally got around to getting Mindless Self Indulgence Discography and I really love me the fuck out of them. (they are bomb to work out to)

of course man man, uhh yeah dude and oh yeah I guess fast karate are still awesome to listen to :D
  • MSI is preeeeetty good
