What Are You Watching / Listening Right Now ?

I love me some Sonic Youth

I've been listening to Hits Are for Squares. Any certain albums or songs I should look for?
  • Experimental Jet Set is the album I remember listening to most. It was on heavy rotation for me in high school. I think that's probably the must recognizable one since that was around the Nirvana time and when I found them. I never heard of Hits Are for Squares till now, I'm usually a fan of greatest hits albums so that ain't a bad choice.
  • Was listening to animenfo's radio stream for a bit a work today. Trinity Blood's OP came up, took me awhile to recognize it, hadn't heard it in years. I was grateful that Dantalian's came up however.

  • I was nine years old.
    I wanted dreads.

  • At Paul's recommendation I watched 'God Bless America' today. The fact I laughed at the dream in the first few minutes of the movie may prove I am a horrible, horrible human being.
  • Wait, so can we take it Paul liked "God Bless America"? Is it in fact better than it looks then?
  • I watched it after Paul recommended it on Facebook.
  • I just finished watching the last two episodes of the third season of Community. What the heck happened? The first two season of Community were great, but the third season has been really disappointing.

Also, Drunk Hulk has informed me that it's David Byrne's birthday.

  • Oh shit. It's no coincidence, then, that I'm playing "Heaven" on my acoustic and yelling the lyrics at the neighbors. Nothing like being drunk all the time and living next to a foster home.
  • If you're taking requests, please start shouting "Life During Wartime" next.
  • I'll yell along with the song, but there's no point in doing what shitty guitar work I can with this one. It requires a whole band. Such a good song. Stop Making Sense version or Fear of Music version?
  • Stop Making Sense, of course.
  • Good man.
  • Definitely just sat on my roof playing Talking Heads and REM songs to the foster kids next door. They think I am some variety of superhuman now.
  • I think we all do, Jon.
  • I'm playing How Soon Is Now by The Smiths and my friend is hearing it and singing the lyrics in her sleep.

That's an unusually pretty AMV, let me help you get that embedded.

  • To cement my day of foisting Talking Heads music on people, I made my roommate sing "Psycho Killer" with me at the local hot dog joint's karaoke night.
  • For all the New York locals in this forum, Blip Fest is coming up

  • Eh, I can't get behind 8 bit music. It reeks too much of nostalgia.

I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax
I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me I'm a real live wire
  • I incorporate some 8-bit synths in my music along with modern synths and real instruments like guitar and bass. How do you feel about that?
  • More power to you, I guess?
  • Well, you didn't answer the question. Do you think it only reeks of nostalgia if you use 100% 8-bit sounds?
  • I hear too much of that 8 bit vibe in recent anime openings. I feel like it's a cheap way to get people of the NES generation to link the song to memories of their childhood in order to get them to feel an emotional connection to the song. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

To answer your question, it may be even more of a nostalgia grab if you incorporate 8 bit sounds with other instruments. But that's just, like, my opinion, mang.
  • I dunno, it's never been about nostalgia for me. I just really like the sound of the bloops and bleeps. I think if the main thing 8 bit artists were going for was nostalgia, every song would sound like the theme to Dr. Wily's Castle. Instead, it's just a really neat element to put into music.

Also, it's kind of a Man Man morning

  • I don't see how user other synths/real instruments as well as an 8-bit synth is MORE nostalgic than just 8-bit? Uhm, anyway, here's some music from my old band: http://www.myspace.com/violencemars

    Is that nostalgic?
  • I watched the first two episodes of Gurren Lagan last night. I usually don't like gonzo stuff, but it's pretty good. Kamina's logic makes the show worth watching, though I could do without all cheesecake gags involving Yoko.
  • Uh, isn't Gurren Lagaan Gainax and not Gonzo?
  • I assumed he meant gonzo in the sense of "over the top" because it's lower case.
  • Oh! You might be right at that.
  • @karaokeninja: I'm saying that 8 bit music can be a hook to remind people of the good ol' days of playing their Marios and Megamans. I don't think that all people that make 8 bit music are trying to stir up those emotions, least of all you.

  • awesome.
  • Community is doing a video game episode with 8/16bit characters. It's pretty great.
  • Yeah that, it was pretty good. Must've had some nerd writers because they nailed it to a T. Even their 8-bit avatars was spot on.

Meanwhile, Act of Valour was a pretty bad film. I suppose this is the ultra-realistic depiction of actual combat for military nerds.
  • But at least it had a pretty sweet trailer song by Snow Patrol.
  • Didn't they also have song for Grey's Anatomy?
  • The new tron cartoon is super good. Well at least the first episode is good. It is called Tron: Uprising.

  • It had me at Chow Yun-Fat.
  • Catherine and I saw that at the Gateway about a month ago. It was so good! Totally recommend it.
  • Not to be an asshole but, who?
  • God of Gamblers 1-3, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hard Boiled, The Replacement Killer, A Better Tomorrow, The Killers and last but not least Dragonball Evolution. Geeze don't you know anything?
  • The above post. Really?
  • Yeah, because he is an Asian cinema GOD!
  • He was asking about Catherine.
  • I just assume all questions are about Chow Yun Fat.
  • Oh. Since I was responding to Yakov, I just used her name, as he's met her. Catherine's my girlfriend/a tremendous Chow Yun-Fat fan.
