What Are You Watching / Listening Right Now ?
  • Because she's cute, and doesn't suck at acting necessarily, and does that whole "cute girl" thing (Manic Pixie Dream Girl, while accurate, annoys the shit out of me as a phrase, so I'll refrain from using it) that somehow gives nerds the impression that she's sorta like them and somehow attainable even though she's not really in either case.
  • She's standing on the couch. You're so unbelievable Zooey Deschanel, couches are not for standing.

  • AND THE GUYS ARE LIKE, SHE'S DYSFUNCTIONAL BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO? WE DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS LAWL
  • That show hurts me. The gal is adorable as hell, but it doesn't make the program watchable.
  • I watched the first episode and thought it was the worst thing I'd ever seen.
  • What have I wrought... @.@
  • This chick should sue the creators of New Girl for stealing her life story.

  • I occasionally go back and listen to the podcasts in the "new listeners" section, because of this, I now listen to this song on a loop.
  • Uruturoman!
  • Just watched Attack the Block, really good movie.
  • I am astonished, and satisfied, that someone used the "New Listeners" page... even if it wasn't a new listener.
  • I remember noticing that category for the first time and wondering how long it'd been there.
  • The new Lupin anime is really damn good, and looks absolutely gorgeous. Having Takeshi Koike at the helm probably helps in that regard.
  • Well, finished season 2 of Code Geass and enjoyed the hell out of it. I feel its reputation as Code Trainwreck is somewhat unwarranted; there are some pretty stupid things that happen, and the executive meddling shows in places, but never to the degree that it ruins it. Hardly high art, but a great, fun romp.
  • The ending of S1 was still AAAaaarghwtfomgbbq!
  • If you mean a brutal cliffhanger, than yes.
  • I thought it had the reputation of being "Code Gayass", where every character is designed to for maximum yaoi shipping?
  • Well, considering it is CLAMP doing the designs, yes, there's that too. That said, they don't really do much in the way of fangirl baiting, as it turns out; there's far too much plot going on and female fanservice to take precedence that the most you ever really get is a guy who drapes an arm over one of the MCs a lot when we first meet him and then never really does it again, and one intimate (and hilariously phallic) moment at the very, very end. Come to think of it, there's not nearly as much as I would've thought, and I usually have no patience for shit like that.
  • My favourite part was a map displaying all conquered territories of the Britannia with Australia greyed out. Even in anime we are irrelevant.

And that crazy chess game, where Lelouch's bro moves he's king INTO check!
  • I liked Code Geass, but I liked the first season a lot more than the second season. It just got a bit too convoluted in the end. I think if it had another season or at least 4 or 5 more episodes to explain some of the concepts better, my opinion of the show would be higher.

One thing that bothered me was that due to the character designs of most anime, it was pretty much impossible to discern the nationality of most of the characters. However nationality played a huge role in the series.
  • I could never figure out if that was intentional or not. Because no one ever seemed to call Lelouch on being British, but EVERYONE knew Suzaku was Japanese on first sight.
  • Been watching some new stuff lately, Hunger Games to start out was severely dissapointing (sorry Xeno). Too much romance and
    Spoiler:
after so much buildup of her being a badass she ends up getting saved like 4 times by other players. Also, CG dogs that are real?

Also saw the In Time movie which had a good premise (like HG) but they spent 90% of the movie pointing out their system.
  • I've always really liked that song. "Hustler for death, no heaven for a gangsta"
  • Phi Brain, pretty ridiculous show and great to watch. Especially the puzzle bits, the puzzles aren't evil it's the puzzle makers making evil puzzles. You gotta believe in the heart of the puzzle.

I've been eyeing that series, I might give it a watch.

I like it a lot better than their first single, which was a song about her getting naked in front of a window and you watching.

  • That was awesome, I genuinely laughed out loud.
  • Ditto. And in almost self-parody, I checked out the original again after watching this, and the band is now selling "The Beard Guy" t-shirts. I don't know if it references his ability to make the clinky noise though.
  • That was excellent.
  • Oh god this is great.
  • Been getting into Cowboy Junkies.

  • I just watched Take Shelter. That movie is crazy.
  • Another group I've been getting into lately.
  • This thread is everything I want it to be right now. Take Shelter was awesome. Coincidentally, when I was watching it, I was in a plane flying through a massive storm over the Amazon. Really adds to the effect. Cowboy Junkies and Morphine are fucking incredible. Yakov, have you heard Cowboy Junkies' "Rarities, B-Sides, and Slow, Sad Waltzes?" I love that collection of stuff. Also, the sax player from Morphine went on to do more stuff after the singer died, so you might look him up. I found his other work to be pretty enjoyable.
  • I've mostly been listening to Trinity Sessions and their Best Of album, but I'll look into that album. I saw that they are going to be in Ohio next week (Cincinnati and Kent) and kinda want to go see them.
  • I need a movie that shows prominently features governmental red tape. It's for a project that my wife is doing, the only thing that comes to mind is Brazil but she wants something a bit more serious or real.
  • Would the Catch 22 movie work?
  • Saw Cabin In The Woods. Fucking waste of time all around. Thinks its far smarter than it is and should've been smarter. Wasted most of what I had left on my Regal gift card. Fuck Joss Whedon, seriously.
  • @Blank: To be honest I haven't read book, all I know about it is that it's about the military and has a bunch of Catch-22's in it. But if it shows a bunch of red tape I'll tell her to look into it.
  • I think Rumble In The Bronx may just be the most racially progressive movie in the history of American cinema. I am amazed it got made in the Hollywood of any decade considering the sheer number of non-white people in actual significant roles (which is to say all of them) present in it. Also its really fun, and I don't think I need to recommend it since most likely everyone on this forum has already seen it.

And speaking of race in American cinema: http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2012/03/28/453119/five-white-dudes-hollywood-should-stop-trying-to-make-happen/

Why must we live in a world where these guys are still getting starring roles and Idris Elba isn't Hollwood A-list?
  • (Rumble in the Bronx is not a Hollywood/American movie)

"...in the J.J. Abrams show that people are still insisting is about “a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously cdased to exist.” I guess from one ludicrous premise to the next?"

    cdased?
