The "why I am miserable thread"
  • I don't think Lara Croft is one of the "five most recognizable video game characters in the world".

Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Pikachu, Lara Croft. I think that's the list, and I think you take Luigi off before Lara Croft. I'd also argue that Link and Pac Man (anymore) isn't on the list for the mainstream world.

Its really a shame that this is such a disaster because I think that Crystal Dynamics makes some fantastic games.
  • really, you think Lara Croft is more recognizable than say someone like Master Chief or Kratos?
  • I am 100% sure that mainstream non-gamers know who Lara Croft is before they know who Kratos is. You were like four when this was happening, but she was the subject of a lot of controversy in the 90s.
  • And don't forget the movies.
  • Can we please forget the movies?
  • Never forget.
  • There were movies?
  • Really, Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, Daniel Craig and Gerard "300" Butler...
  • Yeah, Tomb Raider was really well known in the late 90s. I never could make myself play one or two to completion, and I just gave up after that.
  • I failed to get into it as well, and never understood the huge draw -- which I guess was supposed to be her hugely drawn polygonal boobies. The graphics weren't that impressive, I hated the controls and found it generally not very engaging. The only positive thing I got from it was a hearty laugh from Grandma's Boy.
  • God, the controls. I still hurt thinking of them.
  • It was the PS1, everything had shitty controls. Especially before the dual shock controller.
  • Was the Kotaku interview about Tomb Raider talking about the first game or the new one? Because I remember them saying "we made the main character a girl so that guys would be more interested, they would get all invested and want to protect her" way back when they made the first game.

I remember Crash Bandicoot having pretty decent controls.

  • Man, fuck those Mass Effect 3 "endings". Supreme dissapointment. Going to drink to forget it even happened.
  • Yeah, basically. Welcome to the club. I spent some time yesterday trying not to rage about it again since I'm going my own 2nd playthrough.
  • I had a shoplifter throw at bike at me.
  • I had a shoplifter throw at bike at me.

    Were they stealing the bike?
  • No PJs, the bike was his.
  • He threw his own property at you? That's not how shoplifting is supposed to work!
  • The shoplifter sounds like a damn idiot. Who steals PJs? Pajamas are the least essential clothing that a dude might have. If you really need to sleep in clothing just wear some boxers/sweats and a t-shirt. I really cannot think of any male in this world that wears pajamas with any regularity unless they've made a dangerous lifestyle change of only wearing pajamas at all times.
  • Well I suspected he was homeless as we later found out the PJs he stole were largely shirts along with socks and underwear. My supervisor keeps insisting he didn't look homeless whilst I pointed out he could have got a wash/shave and fresh change of clothes from a homeless shelter. He'd look less eye catching then if you know what I mean? Lordy I feel like a heartless bastard for saying that.

Also I wish I had a 'like' button for Furyk and DG's comments.

  • Kimchi craving, no Korean places around here. I guess I could always try and make it but I'm pretty sure there will be some crazy ingrediant that I won't be able to find. Also it takes 20 days to make.
  • Seems fairly straight forward to me. This sounds good, in a craving pinch and the ingredients shouldn't be too hard to find. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Quick-Kimchi-351892
  • Oh wow that recipe looks fairly easy. I might have to try it.
  • If you get around to making it before me, lemme know how it turns out. It sounds pretty good!
  • I really don't think, "I can't find any kimchee" counts as "why I am miserable".
  • It totally does. Especially when you have that craving that won't go away and its not easily available.
  • Blue waffles.
  • You're welcome. =)
  • Do not google what Getter posted. It is a tub girl-style thing.
  • I googled it and saw something about infections.

I can only assume that it is some horrible thing that makes your waffles turn blue whenever you try to put them near your mouth. I can not imagine how horrible that must be.
  • Now I know what a tub girl is. Thanks for making it worse, Dave.
  • Given the context, I'm pretty sure we can chalk that one up as self-inflicted.
  • Urban dictionary saved me from actually seeing a picture, but I still have to live with knowing what it is.
  • I had a legitimate nightmare last night where people thought I said the phrase "YOLO" and wore Affliction/Tap Out shirts for any reason at all. I was very concerned that people thought my dream self was a total douchebag.
  • Apparently years of visiting Rotten.com and listening to Distorted View have hardened me against any gore/shock stuff. Pustulent meatloaf vagina just can't bring the pain.

Whenever I got out I always yell out YOLO sarcastically to be an ass.
  • I once had a nightmare that I accidentally missed class. Sadly, I am not joking.
  • I've been done with college for 4 years and I still occasionally have "wait, what do you mean today was the due date/exam/presentation" nightmares.
  • For about 2 weeks during my vacation after last semester, I would routinely wake up around 3am freaking out that I had a paper due. It'd usually take a minute before I remembered that I was on vacation.
  • Yeah same here I keep having this same nightmare that I've got an assignment due in for college despite the fact I left roughly 7 years ago.
  • I've been out of college for 11 years now. I've had this dream on occasion where it's the last day of my senior year, and I just remembered that I had a class that I have never attended.

That's how my version of the dream manifests too. I get one every month or so.

  • Speaking of disturbing dreams, I had a really vivid one a couple days ago. My grandfather, who died 18 years ago, was alive and didn't have parkinson's anymore. When I saw him, a flood of childhood feelings rushed back to me; I ran up to him to hug him and confess how much I missed him, and I started sobbing so violently that I woke up.
  • Even in College that dream wouldn't have phased me...probably should have taken that as an early warning sign that I didn't belong there.
  • I've been out of college for 8 years and still have dreams about sleeping through a final or not attending classes and failing and that sort of thing.

My dog that was my constant companion for most of my childhood died 12 years ago. I still have dreams about him.

I'm a teacher and I have that nightmare at least four or five times during the school year. Its usually that I have to go back to school because I didn't pass a class or was missing a credit or something.
  • I get that one too, and it's always something that's not applicable to what I do, like an art class.
  • I also have one where I'm in the middle of the quarter and realise there was some class that I haven't gone to all term and there is no way now that I can pass it.
