This might be out of the blue, but I am having a real problem with settings in the last couple I have played to completion. Right now I am sitting with Rage for the Xbox paused in front of me and the thought occurred to me that although I have have a total of 8 hours of play time in the game I feel like I have no advanced at all. The central quest hub is sending me back to the same places I just dungeon crawled through 2 hours ago.

Now this is not the only game to have done this Dragon Age 2 was terrible with setting variation and even Deus Ex felt like visiting the same places over and over (although I think that China was an very well done level). What the point I guess I am trying to get at before I ramble on about bullshit too much is that:

In your opinion do you think it is better for developers to put so much time and detailed work into so few settings that they send you back to time and again or would it be better spent making more places to discover and make you feel rewarded for putting your time into it, but with the sacrifice of attention to detail?

Of course not all games can do this because this doesn't pertain to the plot the story is going for. For example I am sure you never go to tropics or Africa in Red Dead Redemption. Dreamfall: the longest journey and Beyond Good and Evil were made tremendously better I think because of the fact that as you progressed through the game you actually felt like you were making progress and seeing new places. Now as I get ready to unpause Rage I almost dread what the next few hours of post apocalyptic mayhem will entail(I can only assume more mutants and the "Authority").

It's a 3rd person tower defense game, where your character, the War Mage, runs around in real time setting traps and casting spells to prevent legions of orcs from overrunning the Dimensional Rifts. The story is pretty hilarious, too, and it's revealed in a very Godhand fashion, with voice-over and the occasional title card sequence between levels instead of cutscenes.

My only complaint is that the game lacks co-op, although I'm hoping a later DLC would fix that.

tl;dr version: Contest | "I like XBLIG, you should like it. Let's be friends."

So...at least a couple of you actually check the site or Fast Karate has some seriously dedicated bots. So, hey...thanks bots/dudes. I wasn't going to dedicate a topic to it originally, but figured this makes more sense than randomly linking to shit in other places.

RIGHT. We're giving away some free games this week (details are in the latest Rundown) - one of which is Wizorb, probably one of best Brick Breaker/Araknoid type games I've ever played. I fucking hate these kind of games with a burning, furious passion, so when I say it's actually pretty solid, hopefully that adequately stresses the point. There's also Astralia (space shooter/RTS...kinda on both, it's unique), Dark Delve and...Sherbert Thieves. Yeah, that last one just kinda got thrown in.

I'm also putting up a 1600 MSP card or (if the winner has Steam/PSN instead) making it easy with a straight $20. Just comment on the Rundown, or follow and tweet at us on twitter (@GearFish) - that's it. Easy.

Alright, free stuff accomplished. Part 2 is extra credit. Extra credit that isn't worth anything. So we're clear.
The reason "XBLIG" is in the title is because I'd like to talk indie for a minute. Some reiterated ideas here. Sorry. Like most people, I pretty much ignored the 360's indie marketplace. More or less for good reason, things like Techno Kitten Adventure don't exactly help to sell the idea that it's anything more than a dumping ground for shitty flash game ripoffs. On a secondary level, because almost no one really covers it very well. Sure, there's scattered websites out there, Armless Octopus and Two Fedoras are both good, although the Indie Gamer Chick probably sports some of the best reviews, but they've all got failings. Pretty shortly after actually starting the site, we started covering independent titles just because they were cheap and usually pretty short. Then I started actually talking with devs, realizing how much things actually suck for a lot of them going through Microsoft. The XNA community gets pretty much no support beyond policing itself and teeth must be pulled in order to get so much as a Dashboard spot (which actually happened for the Indie Game Summer Uprising).

Just as an example: I've probably mentioned this elsewhere but Sequence (which finished 3rd in the dream.build.play contest MS held) had barely broke even as of late June/early July, but usually as soon as an XBLIG game disappears off of Recently Released titles, sales disappear unless something exceptional happens. Parasitus, a favorite of mine, spent four years in development and mid-August when I talked with the head of their essentially three man team (Brian Farina pretty much IS Heart Attack Machine), they'd sold like 300 copies. That fucking sucks. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a charity case or anything. There's some seriously flawed / trash titles up there, and spending a ton of time and/or money developing a mediocre game might be sad, but it also doesn't make it suck any less.

To the point: I've been talking with Kairi (Indie Gamer Chick) about this mostly, but one of the issues I think hurts the scene as much as anything is that what little coverage exists (from a review standpoint) is pretty much worthless. Most indie reviewers are total cheerleaders, operating on the smaller, cheaper version of the IGN/Gamespot/etc 7-10 review scale. This is total short bus material, because devs release crap games, indie sites jerk them off, and no one tells them "Hey, dude, your game is busted - here's why." People wander into the indie tab (which is already basically hidden compared to other stuff on the dashboard) download a trial for some godawful game and then never bother going back. Nothing changes.

There's a ton of great games out / coming out, so why care anyway? Well, even if you're rolling in bills, it's still pretty sweet to pick up solid titles for a couple bucks. Dead Pixels (which Dave mentioned in the gaming thread) is a dollar, and it's a solid game, for chrissakes the stupid Gears weapon skins cost more than a decent full XBLIG title. More than that, the open nature of the marketplace allows for a lot of new ideas that you're just not going to see elsewhere. I never thought I'd be championing the platform, but it deserves consideration. Something to think about the next time you buy a $10 map pack with only two new maps and a lazy re-skin of an old one.

Anyway, ranting aside, I also want to improve coverage, so I'm basically putting the question out there: what do you / would you want out of a game site? Why do you check any one place over another?
If you're just here for the contest: well...hurrah! Good luck! Everybody loves free things. Go get those free things.

Do we not have a thread for this game already? Got it the other day, played it with my wife, we got all the way through the game on Hard, to the last boss, and after an hour of trying, had to switch it back to normal, and we breezed through the encounter in 5 minutes. I have trouble recalling another game with a last boss disparity of that level, even stuff like Lost Planet I eventually was able to power through.

Anyone have general thoughts on the game? I recall Dave saying he wasn't fond of the TWEESTs, which is fair... but the emotionally manipulative moments were fine for me, because they came sandwiched between such memorable lines as"SHIT YEAH" and "LOCK AND LOAD." Honestly, more than any of the first two, the majority of dialogue is either action movie cliches or Jack Bauer-style, "There's no time to reveal this plot point right now, we'll talk later, after this battle!"

Nevertheless, there were great moments and setpieces, like
Defending the fort, and having to fall back repeatedly. "Score a Point for the Cougars" put a smile on my face as a sort of Eyeshield 21 moment, and giving Cole a little more meat to him than Terry Tate, Office Space Marine.
I'm getting regular sessions together, so post your gamertag here if you're interested. We had some connection issues earlier, so make sure your NAT type is OPEN, and hopefully we can avoid that.
Apparently the big failure after we got things working was their multiplayer servers went down, which is why we kept seeing "failed to create an internet session"

And then it didn't work when we tried to use Hamachi because we were still set to 'internet' instead of 'lan'.

SO MAYBE IT'LL WORK TONIGHT IF WE DO ALL THIS BACKWARDS SHIT. :D

So, borderlands 2 is actually looking surprisingly solid. Don't get me wrong, I had fun with the first game. It's just a question of how much fun was due to the game itself. Interviews suggest some cool shit in the new one: like enemies having actual AI instead of just running towards you in a giant clump. If they announce removing all of the "humor" from the game that doesn't involve WHATCHU WANT or THIS WHERE CARS LIVE then I'm sold for good.

So normally I am not interested in MMOs since I never have time to keep up with them and I don't like paying monthly fees. There was a Gundam MMO a few years ago in Japan that I was dying to play, but of course it never came out here. Eventually they took the servers down and that was it. Except fans put up a free server. I have a giant roboner about this like you wouldn't believe. Is anyone else interested in maybe trying this out with me?

I really like the idea of playing some XBL games on the go but the only one I see available for my carrier (Sprint) is the HTC Arrive, and its pretty expensive! Even with the contract re-up bonus.
